A systematic literature review on prototyping with Arduino: Applications, challenges, advantages, and limitations

Power quality and energy consumption measurements support providers and energy users with solutions for acquiring and reporting information about the energy supply for residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. In particular, since the average number of electronic devices in homes increases year by year and their sensitivity is very high, it is not only important to monitor the total energy consumption, but also the quality of the power supplied. However, in practice, end-users do not have information about the energy consumption in real-time nor about the quality of the power they receive, because electric energy meters are too expensive and complex to be handled. In order to overcome these inconveniences, an innovative, open source, low-cost, precise, and reliable power and electric energy meter is presented that can be easily installed and managed by any inexperienced user at their own home in urban or rural areas. The system was validated in a real house over a period of two weeks, showing interesting results and findings which validate our proposal.

OpenZmeter: An Efficient Low-Cost Energy Smart Meter and Power Quality Analyzer

Street lighting is a fundamental aspect of security systems in homes, industrial facilities, and public places. To detect parking lot occupancy in outdoor environments, street light control plays a crucial role in smart surveillance applications that can perform robustly in extreme surveillance environments. However, traditional parking occupancy systems are mostly implemented for outdoor environments using costly sensor-based techniques. This study uses the Jetson TX2 to develop a method that can accurately identify street parking occupancy and control streetlights to assist occupancy detection, thereby reducing costs, and can adapt to various weather conditions. The proposed method adopts You Only Look Once version 3 (YOLO v3, Seattle, WA, USA) based on MobileNet version 2 (MobileNet v2, Salt Lake City, UT, USA), which is area-based and uses voting to stably recognize occupancy status. This solution was verified using the CNRPark + EXT dataset, a simulated model, and real scenes photographed with a camera. Our experiments revealed that the proposed framework can achieve stable parking occupancy detection in streets.

Video-Based Parking Occupancy Detection for Smart Control System

The installation of smart meters in smart cities to monitor streetlights (SLs) provides easy access to measurements of electrical variables and lighting levels, which improves the operation of installation. The use of smart meters in cities requires temporary high-resolution data to improve the energy efficiency (EE) of SLs. Long range (LoRa) is an ideal wireless protocol for use in smart cities due to its low energy consumption, secure communications, and long range indoors and outdoors. For this purpose, we developed a low-cost new system and successfully evaluated it by developing three devices, namely the measure and control device for street lights (MCDSL), lighting level measurement device (LLMD) and gateway LoRa network (GWLN), based on the Arduino open-source electronic platform. This paper describes the hardware and software design and its implementation. Further, an algorithm has been developed to enhance the energy efficiency of public lights using MCDSL, the energy efficiency for street lights (EESL) algorithm, that use the illumination level measured on the same set of SLs with a dynamic control, which assumed different lighting levels throughout the night, and adjusted luminous flux based on the traffic intensity of pedestrians. It sends the acquired data through the LoRa low-power wide-area-network (LPWAN) to the cloud.

Smart Public Lighting Control and Measurement System Using LoRa Network

Objectives/ Methods: The conventional farming approaches have been found unable to deliver an appropriate quantity of fertilizer. Similarly, no explicit measure can be established to regulate the climate parameters. In this study, we have developed a prototype comprising a sensor network (SN) based node, Raspberry Pi based embedded system (ES) that is active to monitor the climatic parameters with air temperature, air humidity, soil moisture,air carbon dioxide, and light intensity within a greenhouse environment.Raspberry Pi based ES is integrated with internet-of-things (IoT) analytics, termed as ThingSpeak, and sensor nodes are physically placed in a greenhouse environment to record climate parameter data being forwarded to the gateway. The gateway nodes direct this data to the agriculture professional(s) through a web browser over the internet. Findings: Based on the received data, the ES triggers the intelligent decision-making by implementing appropriate arrangements to regulate climate parameters. For example, the greenhouse climate is controlled through switching ``ON\'\' certain devices i.e., lights, water sprinklers/exhaust fan, and fan. We deliberate that the proposed scheme can be implementable at a bigger scale without any difficulty and it will be much advantageous for an increase in sustainability, productivity, and profitability of a farming system. Novelty: Up to the authors\' best knowledge, it is the first wireless deployment of ThingSpeak analytics for a smart greenhouse environment by using the Raspberry Pi. The main advantages of this intelligent crop monitoring system include uninterrupted mobile monitoring of the greenhouse, improved crop yield and productivity, negligible human interface/dependency.

Intelligent greenhouse monitoring and control scheme: An arrangement of Sensors, Raspberry Pi based Embedded System and IoT platform

We present an Arduino-based automation system to control the streetlights based on solar rays and object's detection. We aim to design various systems to achieve the desired operations, which no longer require time-consuming manual switching of the streetlights. The proposed work is accomplished by using an Arduino microcontroller, a light dependent resistor (LDR) and infrared-sensors while, two main contributions are presented in this work. Firstly, we show that the streetlights can be controlled based on the night and object's detection. In which the streetlights automatically turn to DIM state at night-time and turn to HIGH state on object's detection, while during day-time the streetlights will remain OFF. Secondly, the proposed automated system is further extended to skip the DIM condition at night time, and streetlights turn ON based on the objects' detection only. In addition, an automatic door system is introduced to improve the safety measurements, and most importantly, a counter is set that will count the number of objects passed through the road. The proposed systems are designed at lab-scale prototype to experimentally validate the efficiency, reliability, and low-cost of the systems. We remark that the proposed systems can be easily tested and implemented under real conditions at large-scale in the near future, that will be useful in the future applications for automation systems and smart homes.

An Automation System for Controlling Streetlights and Monitoring Objects Using Arduino.

The integration of greater functionalities into vehicles increases the complexity of car-controlling. Many research efforts are dedicated to designing car-controlling systems that allow users to instruct the car just to show it what it should do; however, for non-expert users, controlling the car with a remote or a switch is complicated. So, keeping this in mind, this paper presents an Arduino based car-controlling system that no longer requires manual control of the cars. Two main contributions are presented in this work. Firstly, we show that the car can be controlled with hand-gestures, according to the movement and position of the hand. The hand-gesture system works with an Arduino Nano, accelerometer, and radio-frequency (RF) transmitter. The accelerometer (attached with the hand-glove) senses the acceleration forces that are produced by the hand movement, and it will transfer the data to the Arduino Nano that is placed on hand glove. After receiving the data, Arduino Nano will convert it into different angle values in ranges of 0°⁻450° and send the data to the RF receiver of the Arduino Uno, which is placed on the car through the RF transmitter. Secondly, the proposed car system is to be controlled by an android based mobile-application with different modes (e.g., touch buttons mode, voice recognition mode). The mobile-application system is the extension of the hand-gesture system with the addition of Bluetooth module. In this case, whenever the user presses any of the touch buttons in the application, and/or gives voice commands, the corresponding signal is sent to the Arduino Uno. After receiving the signal, Arduino will check this against its predefined instructions for moving forward, backward, left, right, and brake; then it will send the command to the motor module to move the car in the corresponding direction. In addition, an automatic obstacle detection system is introduced to improve the safety measurements to avoid any hazards with the help of sensors placed at the front of the car. The proposed systems are designed as a lab-scale prototype to experimentally validate the efficiency, accuracy, and affordability of the systems. The experimental results prove that the proposed work has all in one capability (hand-gesture, touch buttons and voice-recognition with mobile-application, obstacle detection), is very easy to use, and can be easily assembled in a simple hardware circuit. We remark that the proposed systems can be implemented under real conditions at large-scale in the future, which will be useful in automobiles and robotics applications.

An Automated Robot-Car Control System with Hand-Gestures and Mobile Application Using Arduino

Our manuscript aims to develop a system which will lead to energy conservation and by doing so, we would be able to lighten few more homes. The proposed work is accomplished by using Arduino microcontroller and sensors that will control the electricity based on night and object's detection. Meanwhile, a counter is set that will count the number of objects passed through the road. The beauty of the proposed work is that the wastage of unused electricity can be reduced, lifetime of the streetlights gets enhance because the lights do not stay ON during the whole night, and helps to increase safety measurements. We are confident that the proposed idea will be beneficial in the future applications of microcontrollers and sensors etc.

Automatic streetlights that glow on detecting night and object using Arduino.

Typically, the farmers are using the traditional ways of farming that cannot provide the proper amount of fertilizers and no specific criterion can be set the proper amount of climate parameters. Henceforth, the agricultural field demands up-to-date technology to enhance the desired outputs by deploying automated crop techniques for the better production of crops and plants. In the prescribed context, we have devised an architecture consisting of an embedded system and a wireless sensor network that could be employed to monitor the climatic parameters such as humidity, temperature, carbon dioxide, acidity, soil moisture, and light intensity etc. in a greenhouse. This work is accomplished by manually positioning the different sensor nodes in the greenhouse for collection of climate data which is subsequently forwarded to gateway nodes. Gateway nodes are responsible to send this information to the intended user or an agriculture professional via an internet web browser. The received data trigger the proposed embedded system to automatically proceed a decision by executing suitable actions to adjust an agriculture field with climate parameters. For instance, the climate of a greenhouse is controlled by turning on certain devices including fan, water sprinkler, lights etc. The proposed fruitful system is constructed at lab-scale prototype as a witness to proof the reliability, low-cost and efﬁciency of the proposed design. We consider that the proposed design can be easily implemented at large-scale in future, and will be beneficial for escalation of the profitability, sustainability, and productivity of the agricultural system.
