A new mechanism for baryogenesis is proposed. It is argued that, after inflation, the scalar quarks and leptons of a supersymmetric GUT may have large expectation values. The subsequent evolution of such a system is shown to generate a significant baryon density. For typical values of the parameters, n B / n γ may be as large as 10 3 .

A New Mechanism for Baryogenesis

Flavor structures of charged fermions and massive neutrinos

The anomalous magnetic moments of the electron and the muon are interesting observables, since they can be measured with great precision and their values can be computed with excellent accuracy within the Standard Model (SM). The current experimental measurement of this quantities show a deviation of a few standard deviations with respect to the SM prediction, which may be a hint of new physics. The fact that the electron and the muon masses differ by two orders of magnitude and the deviations have opposite signs makes it difficult to find a common origin of these anomalies. In this work we introduce a complex singlet scalar charged under a Peccei-Quinn-like (PQ) global symmetry together with the electron transforming chirally under the same symmetry. In this realization, the CP-odd scalar couples to electron only, while the CP-even part can couple to muons and electrons simultaneously. In addition, the CP-odd scalar can naturally be much lighter than the CP-even scalar, as a pseudo-Goldstone boson of the PQ-like symmetry, leading to an explanation of the suppression of the electron anomalous magnetic moment with respect to the SM prediction due to the CP-odd Higgs effect dominance, as well as an enhancement of the muon one induced by the CP-even component.

A light complex scalar for the electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments

We present the first example of a grand unified theory (GUT) with a modular symmetry interpreted as a family symmetry. The theory is based on supersymmetric $SU(5)$ in 6d, where the two extra dimensions are compactified on a ${T}_{2}/{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ orbifold. We have shown that, if there is a finite modular symmetry, then it can only be ${A}_{4}$ with an (infinite) discrete choice of moduli, where we focus on $\ensuremath{\tau}=\ensuremath{\omega}={e}^{i2\ensuremath{\pi}/3}$, the unique solution with $|\ensuremath{\tau}|=1$. The fields on the branes respect a generalized $CP$ and flavor symmetry ${A}_{4}\ensuremath{\ltimes}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ which is isomorphic to ${S}_{4}$ which leads to an effective $\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\tau}$ reflection symmetry at low energies, implying maximal atmospheric mixing and maximal leptonic $CP$ violation. We construct an explicit model along these lines with two triplet flavons in the bulk, whose vacuum alignments are determined by orbifold boundary conditions, analogous to those used for $SU(5)$ breaking with doublet-triplet splitting. There are two right-handed neutrinos on the branes whose Yukawa couplings are determined by modular weights. The charged lepton and down-type quarks have diagonal and hierarchical Yukawa matrices, with quark mixing due to a hierarchical up-quark Yukawa matrix.

S U (5 ) grand unified theory with A 4 modular symmetry

With the establishment and maturation of the experimental programs searching for new physics with sizeable couplings at the LHC, there is an increasing interest in the broader particle and astrophysics community for exploring the physics of light and feebly-interacting particles as a paradigm complementary to a New Physics sector at the TeV scale and beyond. FIPs 2020 has been the first workshop fully dedicated to the physics of feebly-interacting particles and was held virtually from 31 August to 4 September 2020. The workshop has gathered together experts from collider, beam dump, fixed target experiments, as well as from astrophysics, axions/ALPs searches, current/future neutrino experiments, and dark matter direct detection communities to discuss progress in experimental searches and underlying theory models for FIPs physics, and to enhance the cross-fertilisation across different fields. FIPs 2020 has been complemented by the topical workshop "Physics Beyond Colliders meets theory", held at CERN from 7 June to 9 June 2020. This document presents the summary of the talks presented at the workshops and the outcome of the subsequent discussions held immediately after. It aims to provide a clear picture of this blooming field and proposes a few recommendations for the next round of experimental results.

Feebly-interacting particles: FIPs 2020 workshop report

Behind the observed pattern of lepton flavor mixing is a partial or approximate μ-τ flavor symmetry-a milestone on our road to the true origin of neutrino masses and flavor structures. In this review article we first describe the features of μ-τ permutation and reflection symmetries, and then explore their various consequences on model building and neutrino phenomenology. We pay particular attention to soft μ-τ symmetry breaking, which is crucial for our deeper understanding of the fine effects of flavor mixing and CP violation.

Given its briefness and predictability, the minimal seesaw-a simplified version of the canonical seesaw mechanism with only two right-handed neutrino fields-has been studied in depth and from many perspectives, and now it is being pushed close to a position of directly facing experimental tests. This article is intended to provide an up-to-date review of various phenomenological aspects of the minimal seesaw and its associated leptogenesis mechanism in neutrino physics and cosmology. Our focus is on possible flavor structures of such benchmark seesaw and leptogenesis scenarios and confronting their predictions with current neutrino oscillation data and cosmological observations. In this connection particular attention will be paid to the topics of lepton number violation, lepton flavor violation, discrete flavor symmetries, CP violation and antimatter of the Universe.
