The purpose of this announcement is to effect the valid publication of the following effectively published new names and new combinations under the procedure described in the Bacteriological Code (1990 Revision). Authors and other individuals wishing to have new names and/or combinations included in future lists should send three copies of the pertinent reprint or photocopies thereof, or an electronic copy of the published paper to the IJSEM Editorial Office for confirmation that all of the other requirements for valid publication have been met. It is also a requirement of IJSEM and the ICSP that authors of new species, new subspecies and new combinations provide evidence that types are deposited in two recognized culture collections in two different countries. It should be noted that the date of valid publication of these new names and combinations is the date of publication of this list, not the date of the original publication of the names and combinations. The authors of the new names and combinations are as given below. Inclusion of a name on these lists validates the publication of the name and thereby makes it available in the nomenclature of prokaryotes. The inclusion of a name on this list is not to be construed as taxonomic acceptance of the taxon to which the name is applied. Summary
Almost the entire seafloor is covered with sediments that can be more than 10 000 m thick and represent a vast microbial ecosystem that is a major component of Earth's element and energy cycles. Notably, a significant proportion of microbial life in marine sediments can exploit energy conserved during transformations of sulfur compounds among different redox states. Sulfur cycling, which is primarily driven by sulfate reduction, is tightly interwoven with other important element cycles (carbon, nitrogen, iron, manganese) and therefore has profound implications for both cellular- and ecosystem-level processes. Sulfur-transforming microorganisms have evolved diverse genetic, metabolic, and in some cases, peculiar phenotypic features to fill an array of ecological niches in marine sediments. Here, we review recent and selected findings on the microbial guilds that are involved in the transformation of different sulfur compounds in marine sediments and emphasise how these are interlinked and have a major influence on ecology and biogeochemistry in the seafloor. Extraordinary discoveries have increased our knowledge on microbial sulfur cycling, mainly in sulfate-rich surface sediments, yet many questions remain regarding how sulfur redox processes may sustain the deep-subsurface biosphere and the impact of organic sulfur compounds on the marine sulfur cycle.

The life sulfuric: microbial ecology of sulfur cycling in marine sediments.

To date, very little is known about the bacterial core community of marine sediments. Here we study the environmental distribution, abundance and ecogenomics of the gammaproteobacterial Woeseiaceae/JTB255 marine benthic group. A meta-analysis of published work shows that the Woeseiaceae/JTB255 are ubiquitous and consistently rank among the most abundant 16S rRNA gene sequences in diverse marine sediments. They account for up to 22% of bacterial amplicons and 6% of total cell counts in European and Australian coastal sediments. The analysis of a single-cell genome, metagenomic bins and the genome of the next cultured relative Woeseia oceani indicated a broad physiological range, including heterotrophy and facultative autotrophy. All tested (meta)genomes encode a truncated denitrification pathway to nitrous oxide. The broad range of energy-yielding metabolisms possibly explains the ubiquity and high abundance of Woeseiaceae/JTB255 in marine sediments, where they carry out diverse, but yet unknown ecological functions.

Genomic repertoire of the Woeseiaceae/JTB255, cosmopolitan and abundant core members of microbial communities in marine sediments

The pure culture of prokaryotes remains essential to elucidating the role of these organisms. Scientists have reasoned that hard to cultivate microorganisms might grow in pure culture if provided with the chemical components of their natural environment. However, most microbial species in the biosphere that would otherwise be “culturable” may fail to grow because of their growth state in nature, such as dormancy. That means even if scientist would provide microorganisms with the natural environment, such dormant microorganisms probably still remain in a dormant state. We constructed an enrichment culture system for high-efficiency isolation of uncultured strains from marine sediment. Degree of enrichment analysis, dormant and active taxa calculation, viable but non-culturable bacteria resuscitation analysis, combined with metatranscriptomic and comparative genomic analyses of the interactions between microbial communications during enrichment culture showed that the so-called enrichment method could culture the “uncultured” not only through enriching the abundance of “uncultured,” but also through the resuscitation mechanism. In addition, the enrichment culture was a complicated mixed culture system, which contains the competition, cooperation, or coordination among bacterial communities, compared with pure cultures. Considering that cultivation techniques must evolve further—from axenic to mixed cultures—for us to fully understand the microbial world, we should redevelop an understanding of the classic enrichment culture method. Enrichment culture methods can be developed and used to construct a model for analyzing mixed cultures and exploring microbial dark matter. This study provides a new train of thought to mining marine microbial dark matter based on mixed cultures.

Metatranscriptomic and comparative genomic insights into resuscitation mechanisms during enrichment culturing.

The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) blowout resulted in the deposition to the seafloor of up to 4.9% of 200 million gallons of oil released into the Gulf of Mexico. The petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations near the wellhead were high immediately after the spill, but returned to background levels a few years after the spill. Microbial communities in the seafloor are thought to be responsible for the degradation of hydrocarbons, however, our knowledge is primarily based upon gene diversity surveys and hydrocarbon concentration in field sediment samples. Here, we investigated the oil degradation potential and changes in bacterial community by amending seafloor sediment collected near the DWH site with crude oil and both oil and Corexit dispersant. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were rapidly degraded during the first 30 days of incubation, while alkanes were degraded more slowly. With the degradation of hydrocarbons, the relative abundances of Colwelliaceae, Alteromonadaceae, Methylococales, Alcanivorax, Bacteriovorax, and Phaeobacter increased remarkably. However, the abundances of oil-degrading bacteria changed with oil chemistry. Colwelliaceae decreased with increasing oil degradation, whereas Alcanivorax and Methylococcales increased considerably. We assembled seven genomes from the metagenome, including ones belonging to Colwellia, Alteromonadaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, the newly reported genus Woeseia, and candidate phylum NC10, all of which possess a repertoire of genes for hydrocarbon degradation. Moreover, genes related to hydrocarbon degradation were highly enriched in the oiled treatment, suggesting that the hydrocarbons were biodegraded, and that the indigenous microflora have a remarkable potential for the natural attenuation of spilled oil in the deep-sea surface sediment.

Hydrocarbon degradation and response of seafloor sediment bacterial community in the northern Gulf of Mexico to light Louisiana sweet crude oil.

A novel Gram-stain-negative, rods or bent rods, facultatively anaerobic, oxidase-negative and catalase-positive bacterium, designated XK5T, was isolated from coastal sediment from Xiaoshi Island, Weihai, China. Optimal growth occurred at 28–35 °C (range 8–42 °C) and pH 7.0–8.0 (range pH 6.0–9.0) with 1–3 % (w/v) NaCl (range 0.5–8 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain XK5T was 92.1 % similar to the type strain of Thioalkalivibrio thiocyanodenitrificans, 91.9 % to the type strain of Thioalkalivibrio sulfidiphilus and 91.8 % to the type strain of Thioalkalivibrio denitrificans; similarity to other species was less than 91 %. The isolate and closely related environmental clones formed a novel family level clade in the order Chromatiales. The polar lipid profile of the novel isolate consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and some other unknown phospholipids, aminolipids and lipids. Major cellular fatty acids were iso-C17 : 1ω9c and iso-C15 : 0 and the main respiratory lipoquinone was Q-8. The DNA G+C content of strain XK5T was 59.3 mol%. Comparative analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences and characterization indicated that strain XK5T represents a novel species of a new genus within a novel family of the order Chromatiales, for which the name Woeseia oceani gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Woeseia oceani is XK5T ( = ATCC BAA-2615T = CICC 10905T). In addition, a novel family name, Woeseiaceae fam. nov., is proposed to accommodate the genus Woeseia.

A novel Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, gliding, facultatively anaerobic, oxidase-negative and catalase-positive bacterium, designated FA350T, was isolated from coastal sediment from Xiaoshi Island, Weihai, China. Strain FA350T showed growth on modified nutrient agar supplemented with 0.1 % d-(+)-trehalose and with distilled water replaced by seawater. Optimal growth occurred at 33 °C and pH 8.5 with 4 % NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain FA350T belongs to a novel bacterial order in the class 
Deltaproteobacteria
, and the most closely related type strains belong to the order 
Desulfuromonadales
, with 85.1–85.6 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The polar lipid profile of the novel strain consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and two unknown phospholipids. Major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 and iso-C17 : 1ω10c and menaquinone MK-7 was the sole respiratory quinone. The DNA G+C content of strain FA350T was 60.3 mol%. A novel Gram-stain-negative, rod-to-spiral-shaped, oxidase- and catalase- positive and facultatively aerobic bacterium, designated HS6T, was isolated from marine sediment of Yellow Sea, China. It can reduce nitrate to nitrite and grow well in marine broth 2216 (MB, Hope Biol-Technology Co., Ltd) with an optimal temperature for growth of 30–33 °C (range 12–45 °C) and in the presence of 2–3 % (w/v) NaCl (range 0.5–7 %, w/v). The pH range for growth was pH 6.2–9.0, with an optimum at 6.5–7.0. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences demonstrated that the novel isolate was 93.3 % similar to the type strain of Neptunomonas antarctica, 93.2 % to Neptunomonas japonicum and 93.1 % to Marinobacterium rhizophilum, the closest cultivated relatives. The polar lipid profile of the novel strain consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and some other unknown lipids. Major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c/iso-C15:0 2-OH), C18:1 ω7c and C16:0 and the main respiratory quinone was Q-8. The DNA G+C content of strain HS6T was 61.2 mol %. Based on the phylogenetic, physiological and biochemical characteristics, strain HS6T represents a novel genus and species and the name Motiliproteus sediminis gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is HS6T (=ATCC BAA-2613T=CICC 10858T).

Motiliproteus sediminis gen. nov., sp. nov., isolated from coastal sediment

Strain NH1T, a pink-pigmented, facultatively anaerobic, heterotrophic, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative, Gram-stain-negative marine bacterium, was isolated from marine sediment on the coast of Weihai, China. Cells of strain NH1T were rod-shaped, 0.8–2.0 µm in length and 0.5–1.0 µm in width. The strain was able to grow at 13–37 °C, pH 5.5–8.5, in the presence of 0.0–8.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Optimal growth was observed at 28 °C, with 3.0 % (w/v) NaCl and pH 6.5–7.0. Nitrate was reduced. The G+C content of the DNA was 41.9 mol%. The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7 and the main cellular fatty acids (>10 %) were summed feature 3 (33.6 %) comprising iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c, and iso-C15:0 (19.2%). The major polar lipids in strain NH1T were phosphatidylethanolamine, unidentified lipids, phospholipid and aminolipids. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain NH1T was highly related to the type strains of 
Algoriphagus antarcticus
(97.87 % 16SrRNA gene sequence similarity) and 
Algoriphagus ratkowskyi
(97.56 %). On basis of the phenotypic and phylogenetic data, strain NH1T should be classified as representing a novel species of the genus 
Algoriphagus
, for which the name Algoriphagus resistens sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NH1T (=MCCC 1H00140T=KCTC 52228T).

Heterologous expression is an indispensable approach to exploiting natural products from phylogenetically diverse microbial communities. In this study, we constructed a heterologous expression system based on strain Burkholderia thailandensis E264 by deleting efflux pump genes and screening constitutive strong promoters. The biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC) of disorazol from Sorangium cellulosum So ce12 was expressed successfully with this host, and the yield of its product, disorazol F2, rather than A1, was improved to 38.3 mg/L by promoter substitution and insertion. In addition to the disorazol gene cluster, the BGC of rhizoxin from Burkholderia rhizoxinica was also expressed efficiently, whereas no specific peak was detected when shuangdaolide BGC from Streptomyces sp. B59 was transformed into the host. This system provides another option to explore natural products from different phylogenetic taxa.
