Journal ArticleDOI
Metformin induces apoptosis and cell cycle arrest mediated by oxidative stress, AMPK and FOXO3a in MCF-7 breast cancer cells.
Eveline A.I.F. Queiroz,Stephanie Puukila,Rosangela Aparecida dos Santos Eichler,Sandra Coccuzzo Sampaio,Heidi Forsyth,Simon J. Lees,Aneli M. Barbosa,Robert F.H. Dekker,Zuleica Bruno Fortes,Neelam Khaper +9 more
TL;DR: Results show that metformin has an antiproliferative effect associated with cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, which is mediated by oxidative stress, as well as AMPK and FOXO3a activation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of estrogen on the vascular system
TL;DR: The cardiovascular protective actions of estrogen are partially mediated by a direct effect on the vessel wall and 17beta-estradiol prevents neointimal thickening after balloon injury and also ameliorates the lesions occurring in atherosclerotic conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI
A lower ratio of AT1/AT2 receptors of angiotensin II is found in female than in male spontaneously hypertensive rats
M M Silva-Antonialli,Rita C. Tostes,Lilian A. Y. Fernandes,Debora Rejane Fior-Chadi,Eliana Hiromi Akamine,Maria Helena Catelli de Carvalho,Zuleica Bruno Fortes,Dorothy Nigro +7 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that estrogen modulates AT(1) and AT(2) receptor gene expression and that this might explain at least partially the lower blood pressure observed in female SHR.
Journal ArticleDOI
Toll-like receptor 4 contributes to blood pressure regulation and vascular contraction in spontaneously hypertensive rats
Gisele Facholi Bomfim,Gisele Facholi Bomfim,Rosangela A. dos Santos,Maria Aparecida Oliveira,Fernanda R. Giachini,Eliana Hiromi Akamine,Rita C. Tostes,Zuleica Bruno Fortes,R. Clinton Webb,Maria Helena Catelli de Carvalho +9 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that TLR4 activation contributes to increased blood pressure, low grade inflammation and plays a role in the augmented vascular contractility displayed by SHR.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intrauterine undernutrition: expression and activity of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase in male and female adult offspring.
Maria do Carmo Pinho Franco,Robéria Maria M. P. Arruda,Ana Paula Dantas,Elisa Mitiko Kawamoto,Zuleica Bruno Fortes,Cristoforo Scavone,Maria Helena Catelli de Carvalho,Rita C. Tostes,Dorothy Nigro +8 more
TL;DR: The data show that intrauterine undernutrition induces hypertension both in the male and female offspring, hypertension being more severe in male than in female rats, and alters endothelium-dependent responses in aortas from the resulting offspring.
