Factors affecting consumers’ intention towards purchasing halal food in South Africa: a structural equation modelling

The purpose of this paper is to determine the factors that affect foreign consumers’ purchase intention towards purchasing halal food products in South Africa. These factors are halal awareness, halal logo and attitude, which are important factors in affecting the intention of consumers.,Data were collected via a self-questionnaire with a sample of 230 foreign consumers. For analysing these data, a structural equation modelling technique was used in this study.,Based on the study’s results, all factors significantly influence foreign consumers’ intention towards purchasing halal food products and, subsequently, their buying behaviour. Interestingly, the study found that attitudes and halal awareness of non-Muslim consumers are very high compared with those of the Muslim consumers. Although the study addressed halal food consumers, most of the respondents participated in the study were non-Muslims and the majority of them were Christians.,The respondents were only limited to the Cape Town city in South Africa, and the focus was only on five variables related to halal food consumers, namely, halal awareness halal logo, attitude, purchase intention and buying behaviour.,This study can be used to develop halal food products to attract both Muslim and non-Muslim consumers, who are foreigners to a particular country.,This study is one of the first studies seeking to determine the factors that affect foreign consumers with regard to the purchase of halal food products in South Africa. It is regarded one of the first attempts to determine halal awareness, halal logo and attitude and how purchase intention and buying behaviour can be influenced.

Effect of halal awareness, halal logo and attitude on foreign consumers’ purchase intention

This paper evaluates the relevance of the "bank lending channel'' of monetary policy transmission in Brazil. Disaggregated monthly data of the Brazilian banks balance sheets from December 1994 to December 2001 are analyzed. In addition to the short-term interest rate, we consider the effects of another monetary policy instrument frequently used in Brazil, represented by reserve requirements on overall banks deposits - demand, savings, and time deposits. Dynamic panel data techniques are employed. Our results suggest that the impact of reserve requirements is relevant and stronger for larger banks loans. This finding results from the progressive reserve rates required from banks, which affect to a greater extent banks with larger deposit volumes.

The purpose of this study isto investigate the relationship between HALAL awareness, marketing and religiosity that are postulated to influence customers’ intention to purchase HALAL certified consumer products. Customers’ who visited SABASUN Hypermarket Sdn. Bhd. in Kuala Terengganu were selected as respondents. Questionnaires were used as the research instrument. The findings revealed there are positive relationship between the HALAL awareness and religiosity toward customers’ intention to purchase HALAL certified consumer products. The results also demonstrated that religiosity is the most influential factors in motivating customers’ to purchase HALAL certified products. For future study should consider demographic background as a moderating factor the can regulate the effect on factors influencing customers’ intention to purchase Halal certified consumer products.

The monetary policy indicators such as monetary aggregates, interest rates andMonetary Condition Index (MCI) are the traditional monetary policy indicatorsused in order to obtain early indication of the impact of monetary policy. Theseindicators could function as appropriate monetary policy indicators that will provideinformation to the monetary policy makers. The development in Islamic financialsystem however creates a challenge to find a monetary policy indicator, which is inconformity with Islamic teaching. Therefore, this paper is aimed to examine the futuregrowth of nominal GDP as an alternative variable for monetary policy indicator inIslamic monetary system. The investigation will benefit from data of 17 Islamic banksin Malaysia which implement full fledge or Islamic windows scheme spanning from2005 to 2010. GMM system method is used to analyze the data in hope to validatethe appropriateness of the alternative monetary policy indicator. The result suggeststhat the future growth of nominal GDP is significant as monetary policy indicator andcould be applied by the central bank in implementing the monetary policy especiallyin the dual banking system.

The stability at both individual financial institution and financial system level are a prerequisite for the implementation of monetary policy. In particular, financial stability indicators are aggregate measures comprising of microprudential and macroprudential indicators, which define and signal the health and soundness of financial system in a country. The balance sheet of individual financial institution and financial system provide the information for deriving the financial stability indicators, which partly become the targets of monetary policy. Therefore, understanding the working of both macroprudential and monetary policies are crucial for measuring the soundness and stability of financial system. The aim of this chapter is to help guide policymakers and researchers in identifying policy-relevant questions that can inform policy decisions on the design and implementation of macroprudential policy tools going forward and on the interaction with monetary policy. Secondly, it is aimed to provide information for policymakers on existing issues, which can inform their current policy debates. The analysis of monetary policy tools, doctrines, and the implementation of monetary policy from selected countries are taken as comparison with the macroprudential tools. From the analysis, it is identified that macroprudential and monetary policy tools are different as well as the both of the targets. The effects of macroprudential policy tools are on the financing growth, leverage or capital, and asset prices. While the effects of monetary policy tools are on the reserve position and the benchmark rate in determining the profit margin and profit to be distributed. It is also concluded that the challenge for policymaker in analyzing the effectiveness of both macroprudential and monetary policies are to avoid financial instability.
