29 Jul 2006TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the criteria that characterize desirable mobility properties for the movement of UAVs in a reconnaissance scenario, and provide two mobility models for the scenario, i.e., the random model and the pheromone model.
Abstract: In MANET research the mobility of the nodes is often described using standard synthetic models. Given a particular application, e.g. networks of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) performing a cooperative task, the use of a standard synthetic mobility model can result in incorrect conclusions, as the movement pattern can impact the networking performance of the system. In this paper we present the criteria that characterize desirable mobility properties for the movement of UAVs in a reconnaissance scenario, and provide two mobility models for the scenario. In the first mobility model the UAVs move independently and randomly, and in the second model pheromones guide their movement. The random model is very simple but it achieves mediocre results. The pheromone model has very good scanning properties, but it has problems with respect to network connectivity. The study shows that there in an inherent conflict between the two goals of maximum coverage by frequent rescanning and adequate communication connectivity.

23 Aug 2009TL;DR: A survey of target tracking protocols for sensor networks and presents their classification in a precise manner, including hierarchical, tree-based, prediction- based, mobicast message-based tracking and hybrid methods.
Abstract: Target tracking is one of the non trivial applications of wireless sensor network which is set up in the areas of field surveillance, habitat monitoring, indoor buildings, and intruder tracking. Various approaches have been investigated for tracking the targets, considering diverse metrics like scalability, overheads, energy consumption and target tracking accuracy. This paper for the first time contributes a survey of target tracking protocols for sensor networks and presents their classification in a precise manner. The five main categories explored in this paper are, hierarchical, tree-based, prediction- based, mobicast message-based tracking and hybrid methods. To be more precise, the survey promotes overview of recent research literature along with their performance comparison and evaluation based on simulation with real data. Certainly this task is challenging and not straight forward due to differences in estimations, parameters and performance metrics, therefore the paper concludes with open research challenges.

04 Mar 2007TL;DR: Two brightness control methods for illumination and visible-light communication systems are developed, one method is pulse width modulation (PWM), the other is changing modulation depth, and the relationship between PWM frequency, LED brightness, and communication performance is discussed.
Abstract: We have developed two brightness control methods for illumination and visible-light communication systems. One method is pulse width modulation (PWM), the other is changing modulation depth. Using these proposed methods, we can achieve both dimmer i.e. brightness control and wireless communication at the same time. We discussed the relationship between PWM frequency, LED brightness, and communication performance. The results show that we can control brightness from 0% to 87.5% when we use PWM and data transmission possible when PWM frequency is high enough. Brightness can be controlled from 0% to 100% and communication performance is better than that of PWM when we change modulation depth.

TL;DR: The purpose of this paper is to propose mechanism with minimum requirements on conventional network and user’s equipment and with a simple implementation of actual level of hysteresis margin according to the position of the user in a cell for elimination of redundant handovers.
Abstract: The challenge of elimination of redundant handovers is getting more significant while femtocells with small radius are deployed in networks. The utilization of the femtocells results to more frequent initiation of a handover procedure. This paper focuses on an adaptation of actual level of hysteresis margin according to the position of the user in a cell. The hysteresis margin is commonly used parameter for elimination of redundant handovers. The purpose of this paper is to propose mechanism with minimum requirements on conventional network and user’s equipment and with a simple implementation. Evaluations of proposal in term of efficiency of the redundant handovers reduction as well as an impact on the user’s throughput in 4G wireless networks are carried out. The results show significant reduction of the amount of handovers while reducing the impact on the throughput.

23 Jul 2017TL;DR: This article focuses on enterprise Blockchains and provides a detailed analysis on its core components, technologies and applications.
Abstract: The Blockchain technology has received increased interests in recent years, from both the scientific community and the industry. This technology represents a major paradigm shift in the way smart cities solutions will be built, operated, consumed and marketed in the near future. Even though Blockchains will have a tremendous potential impact on businesses and societies, there are many open challenges that need to be carefully tackled. This article focuses on enterprise Blockchains and provides a detailed analysis on its core components, technologies and applications. Finally, various research challenges and opportunities are discussed.
