This bibliography was originally compiled for a project, headed by Michel Bochaca and Amélia Aguiar Andrade, that intended to include similar bibliographies for seven Atlantic regions, all of which followed the thematic headings adopted here. These bibliographies were not published, but their contents are analysed in ‘Sociétés, mer et littoraux de l’Europe atlantique au Moyen Âge: enjeux, objets et méthodes de la recherche depuis les années 1990’ by Amélia Andrade and Michel Bochaca, with the participation of Beatriz Arizaga, Eduardo Aznar, Laurence Jean-Marie, Maryanne Kowaleski, Frédérique Laget, Michael Limberger, Flávio Miranda, Jesús Sólorzano and Mathias Tranchant, presented at the 2e Congrès International du GIS Histoire Maritime, Nantes (26–28 June 2013), La recherche en histoire maritime: enjeux, objets et méthodes (conference proceedings forthcoming). I thank Michel Bochaca for asking me to participate in this project, and Melissa Kapitan for her help with formatting and typing. Shipping through the Port of St. Thomas, Danish West Indies, 1816–1917

The scene presented on entering this harbor is exceedingly picturesque and beautiful. The range of hills in the background, with their dome summits swelling up to the height of 700 and 1400 feet; the town giving the appearance as if built entirely on the sides of the hill; the bright-colored houses with their red and tiled roofs; the two old towers, and the harbor covered with its shipping, and boats plying in every direction, give an exquisite view, unsurpassed in all the West India islands. Travellers have awarded it this praise, and some have compared it favorably with the view of Funchal in the island of Madeira.' read more read less

Reviews of Peter Linebaugh and Marcus Rediker, The Many-Headed Hydra: Sailors, Slaves, Commoners, and the Hidden History of the Revolutionary Atlantic, with a Response

Abstract:

Readers familiar with Marcus Rediker's Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea: Merchant Seamen, Pirates, and the Anglo-American Maritime World, 1700-1750 (Cambridge, 1987) or Peter Linebaugh's London Hanged: Crime and Civil Society in the Eighteenth Century(Cambridge, 1992) will hardly be surprised by many of the arguments i... Readers familiar with Marcus Rediker's Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea: Merchant Seamen, Pirates, and the Anglo-American Maritime World, 1700-1750 (Cambridge, 1987) or Peter Linebaugh's London Hanged: Crime and Civil Society in the Eighteenth Century(Cambridge, 1992) will hardly be surprised by many of the arguments in this provocative book. That Linebaugh and Rediker "recover some of the lost history of the multiethnic class" [6] ofmaritime workers is indisputable, as is their claim that "history has long been the captive of the nation-state." [7] But whether in the process they show that the people they examine were "essential to the rise of capitalism and the modern, global economy" [6-7] is more problematic. Moreover, while it is certain that their "history from the bottom up" approach rescues some interesting and important maritime workers from the "dustbin of history ," I fear that the corollary may well be that what I view to be a tendency for the authors to overstate their case may well have the opposite effect from what they intended. Since Linebaugh and Rediker make their biases plain, I should perhaps make mine equally clear at the outset. I really want to believe their portrait of maritime workers as harbingers of important aspects of social change, and I want to believe that, like Jesse Lemisch's sailors during the American Revolution, the people whom they describe were early proponents of class consciousness and opponents of a rising capitalism that threatened their livelihoods and self-respect. read more read less
