Publication and citation patterns in the literature of liquid crystals with special reference to the contribution of India, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom and the Soviet Union

Abstract: From an analysis of bibliographic data on 430 journal articles on liquid crystals covered inPhysics Abstracts 1976 and the 4729 citations to them up to the end of 1987, we have identified the geographic origin, the prominent institutions, language and journal-wise distribution of the papers, the citedness of these papers, and the distribution of citations as a time series for the highly cited papers. We have also analysed the 126 papers published by authors from India, Canada, Australia, Israel, Japan and the United Kingdom and covered inPhysics Abstracts 1978, and the 1154 citations to them up to 1987. Unlike in most other high tech areas of physics, in LC research the difference in performance between the USA and the other leading countries is not very pronounced. Publication data from 1976, 1978 and 1985 reveal that LC literature is on the rise and that the percentage share of the Soviet Union is rising fast and that of the USA is on the decline.

A decade of university-industry linkages in electronics and instrumentation engineering at BITS

Abstract: The benefits of a unique educational experiment towards university-industry linkages (UIL) conducted at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) are described. This experiment embraces all disciplines offered by BITS. A study that analyzed the areas of electronics and instrumentation engineering disciplines in some detail is discussed. A profile of projects in the field of electronics and instrumentation carried out by students at various industries and research and development institutions is presented. All aspects of the educational pedagogy that extends university education in a professional setting as operated in the BITS model are outlined. Currently operating UIL programs at BITS, the Practice School (PS), Technology Innovation Center (TIC), ME (Collaborative), off-campus Ph.D., and nonformal distance learning programs are also discussed. >

Comment on "Effect of radiation and surface recombination on the characteristics of an ion-implanted GaAs MESFET

Abstract: For the original article see ibid., vol.37, no.1, p.2-10 (1990). In an attempt to investigate the effect of radiation and surface recombination on an ion implanted GaAs MESFET, S. Mishra et al., the authors of the above-titled paper, developed a closed-form analytical model of the device under illuminated condition. It is argued by the commenter that an incorrect I-V relation of the device in the illuminated condition was derived and that, therefore, the I-V relation obtained by the authors is incorrect. It is also suggested that a true I-V relation of the device in the illuminated condition can only be obtained after expressing the total charge explicitly as a function of channel voltage. >

Reduction of the standing wave effect in positive photoresist using an antireflection coating

Abstract: The standing wave effect in positive photoresist has been found to be drastically reduced by using a thin coating of silicon nitride between the resist and the silicon dioxide film deposited on silicon substrate. The process modeling has been carried out by adopting a method which is a natural extension of ANKAN, a computer program written for the exposure and development of a positive photoresist. The actual calculations have been performed for a line image exposure of AZ1350 photoresist by using the matrix formulation and diffraction limited system. The simulation allows the computation of resist profiles under a variety of experimental conditions. The analysis may be useful for a better linewidth control.

QSAR studies on benzodiazepine receptor binding of purines and amino acid derivatives.

Abstract: Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) studies are reported on the benzodiazepine receptor binding of a series of substituted 9-benzyl-6-dimethylamino-9H-purines and N-(indol-3-ylglyoxylyl)amino acid derivatives. The nitrogen of the five membered heterocyclic ring and the polar substituent in the aromatic ring, present in both series of compounds, form important centres in the binding interaction. We conclude that the receptor must possess a strong nucleophilic centre and a polar site, and that a hydrophobic pocket exists to accommodate hydrophobic moieties.

Effects of sawdust on biogas production from cowdung

Abstract: The biogas generation was performed using cowdung and sawdust in the ratios of 4:1 and 2:1, respectively. The experiments were also conducted using cowdung alone for the comparison purpose. The increase in the amount of sawdust in the mixture of cowdung and sawdust decreases the quantity of gas production. The production of methane up to three weeks is also effected by the amount of sawdust. The nitrogen contents increase and volatile solids decrease with the digestion of waste materials. The thermogravimetric studies of the materials support the biogas generation as the decomposition of particular part of cowdung.

Effect of Illumination on the Capacitance of a Proposed MIS Diode

Abstract: A new metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) diode structure is proposed and studied theoretically to examine the effect of illumination on the characteristics of the device. The capacitance of the proposed structure is calculated in the dark as well as in various illuminated conditions. It is found that the diode capacitance can be controlled by varying the incident light intensity. By incorporating the capacitor in the tuned circuit of an oscillator it will be possible to convert the intensity modulated optical signal to the corresponding frequency modulated electrical signal. The device is also expected to find useful application in optical CCDs for solid-state imaging and optical tuning. Es wird eine neue Metall Isolator-Halbleiter(MIS)-Diodenstruktur vorgeschlagen und theoretisch untersucht, urn den Einflus einer Beleuchtung auf die Bauelementecharakteristik zu bestimmen. Die Kapazitanz der vorgeschlagenen Struktur wird sowohl fur den Dunkelfall als auch fur verschiedene Beleuchtungsbedingungen berechnet. Es wird gefunden, das die Diodenkapazitanz durch Variation der Intensitut des einfallenden Lichts gesteuert werden kann. Durch Einbau des Kondensators in einen abstimmbaren Oszillatorkreis wird es moglich sein, cin intensitutsmoduliertes optisches Signal in ein entsprechendes frequenzmoduliertes elektrisches Signal zu konvertieren. Es wird auch erwartet. das das Bauelemenl eine nutzliche Anwendung in optischen CCDs fur Festkorperdarstellung und optische Abstimmung findet.
