TL;DR: In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of two suspension bridges were estimated from experimentally measured ambient motion time histories using random vibration theory and the power spectral densities of ambient time histories.
Abstract: The dynamic characteristics (i.e., normal mode natural frequencies, damping, and shapes) of two suspension bridges are estimated from experimentally measured ambient motion time histories. These characteristics were estimated using random vibration theory and the power spectral densities of ambient time histories. Twenty normal modes of vibration were observed in the 0 cycle per min-60 cycle per min frequency range for the Newport Bridge in Rhode Island. These modes include nine vertical, six lateral, and two torsional deck modes, plus three longitudinal tower modes. For each mode, estimates are obtained of natural frequency of vibration, damping, and shape. For the other suspension bridge, the William Preston Lane Memorial Bridge, 13 normal modes of vibration were observed. These modes are six vertical, six lateral, and one torsional deck mode. No tower modes were observed in the 0 cycle per min-60 cycle per min frequency range.

TL;DR: The dramatic return to a near normal state during treatment appears to indicate that he did benefit from therapy, and the treatment was interrupted after 15 treatments to rule out spontaneous remission, and no further improvement occurred until treatments were reinstituted.
Abstract: The treatment of a patient for three and one-half months, following occlusion of the right middle cerebral artery with the associated neurological sequelae, with hyperbaric oxygen combined with methyldopa and hydrochlorthazide is presented Treatment scheduled was two and one-half atmospheres absolute The treatment was interrupted after 15 treatments to rule out spontaneous remission for a period of 30 days, and no further improvement occurred until treatments were reinstituted The dramatic return to a near normal state during treatment appears to indicate that he did benefit from therapy

TL;DR: The results suggest that in the rat cortisone treatment in the postweaning period permanently damages growth mechanisms and prevents growth recovery in certain circumstances, but there appears to be some tendency for a delayed catch-up, especially in skeletal growth.
Abstract: Extract: Growth retardation was produced in rats of the Long-Evans strain, 37–41 days of age, by withholding food, by daily injection of 5 mg cortisone subcutaneously, or by feeding a diet containing 0.1 % propylthiouracil (PTU). The duration of fasts were 24, 48, and 72 hr in different experiments. Duration of cortisone or PTU treatment was adjusted to produce maximum differences in body weight between control and experimental groups that were equivalent to the difference produced in the corresponding fast periods. Serial measurements of body weight and tail length were carried out for 60–80 days from the start of the experimental treatments. In the fasting experiments, after feeding was resumed the body weight showed a prompt acceleration and nearly complete catch-up during the course of the observations. Tail length growth decelerated during fasting and then accelerated on refeeding. This resulted in complete catch-up. After cortisone treatment there was no catch-up in body weight or tail length growth. After PTU there was a slight tendency to catch-up in body weight and tail length. The latter appeared to show a pattern of late catch-up. Growth velocity curves for these experiments showed transient changes in growth rates which eventually stabilized by 75 days of age, at about the time the animals became sexually mature. The results suggest that in the rat cortisone treatment in the postweaning period permanently damages growth mechanisms and prevents growth recovery in certain circumstances. Hypothyroidism also results in impairment in catch-up growth, but there appears to be some tendency for a delayed catch-up, especially in skeletal growth. Speculation: Failure of full catch-up by one part of an organism after transient growth arrest may be the result of either (1) damage to growth mechanisms of the part or (2) restriction of growth of the part by a control operating to maintain normal proportions in the organism.

TL;DR: In this article, the indexing member resiliently holds one end of the soapstone stick, slides with the stick, and engages one of several longitudinally spaced stops on the receptacle to control the extent of projection of soapstone.
Abstract: A holder having a receptacle for slidably receiving a stick of marking material such as soapstone. An indexing member resiliently holds one end of the soapstone stick, slides with the stick, and engages one of several longitudinally spaced stops on the receptacle to control the extent of projection of the soapstone. The indexing member is depressible to disengage the stops for slidable readjustment of the longitudinal position of the soapstone.

TL;DR: A power tong combination having a tong head adapted to be driven in opposite pipe gripping and turning directions including a pair of reversible fluid motors respectively equipped with overrunning clutches which drive the gripping mechanism is described in this article.
Abstract: A power tong combination having a tong head adapted to be driven in opposite pipe gripping and turning directions including a pair of reversible fluid motors respectively equipped with overrunning clutches which drive the gripping mechanism (a) at a low speed and low torque to start a threaded pipe connection without danger of cross-threading; (b) at high speed to spin the threaded pipe connection together or apart, and (c) at a high torque to make up or break out the pipe connection, the combination including a hydraulic power and control system with appropriate control valve means.

TL;DR: In this paper, a power tong is used for making up and breaking out pipe joints, in which pipe gripping jaws are actuated to pipe gripping positions from retracted positions responsive to relative rotation in either direction between a jaw carrying member and an actuator member.
Abstract: A power tong for making up and breaking out pipe joints, in which pipe gripping jaws are actuated to pipe gripping positions from retracted positions responsive to relative rotation in either direction between a jaw carrying member and an actuator member, and the jaws are retracted upon reverse relative rotation in the opposite direction, and reverse stop means are provided to prevent reverse relative rotation of said members past the positions at which the jaws are retracted. The reverse stop means includes alternately positionable stops carried by one of the members engageable with alternately spaced stops on the other member to limit reverse relative rotation.

TL;DR: The use of external casing packers and their success ratio have saved the Long Beach Unit (E. Wilmington oil field) considerable cost by reducing the number of wells required for total development of the field as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: External casing packers have been run in over 500 development and injection wells in the Wilmington oil field for zonal segregation and/or intermediate water exclusion with a success ratio of over 92%. The use of these packers and their success ratio have saved the Long Beach Unit (E. Wilmington oil field) considerable cost by reducing the number of wells required for total development of the field.

Abstract: There is reason to believe that some old wooden ships on the deep-sea floor have survived for thousands of years without much change. They will not be covered with much sediment, and it will be possible to find them using new searching techniques. These are embodied in the system of the Alcoa Seaprobe, which is also equipped to identify and raise old ships.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the "average angle" method of survey computation to reduce the margin of error of multiple-shot control points in high-drift well surveys and found that the average angle can have a possible error of ±20 ft (6.1 m) vertically and ±100 ft (30.5 m) horizontally for a well of 6,000 ft (1.8 m) measured depth.
Abstract: Experience at the East Wilmington oil field has shown that discrepancies may be expected with control points calculated from the directional surveys of highly deviated wells, compared to similar points in nearby straight holes. Drop-type multiple-shot surveys commonly differ from wireline single-shot surveys of the same well. The "average angle" method of survey computation is used by THUMS to reduce the margin of error. Even with this refinement, multiple shot surveys in high-drift wells are thought to have a possible error of ±20 ft (6.1 m) vertically and ±100 ft (30.5 m) horizontally for a well of 6,000 ft (1,828.8 m) measured depth. Structure and isopach maps are affected by this error, and the development geologist must use individual judgment in eliminatin or "averaging" suspect control points.
