Insulin levels in thyrotoxicosis and primary myxoedema: response to intravenous glucose and glucagon.

Abstract: Glucose disappearance, insulin-like activity (ILA) and serum immunoreactive insulin (IRI) were studied after intravenous injection of glucose or glucagon in patients suffering from thyrotoxicosis or primary myxoedema. A group of normal subjects was also investigated. Glucose disappearance rate appeared to be normal in hyperthyroid, and markedly reduced in hypothyroid subjects. Fasting ILA levels were significantly higher than normal in myxoedema, and lower than normal in thyrotoxicosis. On the other hand, fasting IRI levels were higher than normal in myxoedema but normal in thyrotoxicosis. After glucose administration ILA in myxoedema remained at higher values than in thyrotoxicosis at any time of the study; in myxoedema, peak ILA levels were reached later than in thyrotoxicosis; peak IRI levels of similar magnitude were reached slightly earlier than normal in thyrotoxicosis, and later in myxoedema; in the latter condition, elevated IRI levels were observed for a longer period than in either euthyroidism or hyper-thyroidism. During this test the insulingogenic index showed only slight changes in normal and in thyrotoxic subjects, whereas it increased significantly up to 60 min in myxoedema. The data indicate that the reduced glucose utilization in hypothyroidism is not due to insulin deficiency, but rather to insulin resistance. It also seems possible that thyroid function influences the time of maximal insulin response to intravenous glucose administration. After glucagon injection, the increase in blood glucose was lower and shorter than normal in thyrotoxicosis; it was initially somewhat slower, but later higher and more sustained than normal, in myxoedema. The smaller increment in blood glucose in the former condition is probably connected with reduced glycogen stores. ILA response was very high and well sustained in myxoedema, whereas it was moderate and shortlasting in thyrotoxicosis. IRI response was higher than normal in hypothyroid subjects, and lower than normal in thyrotoxic subjects. No difference in the time required for maximal response was observed among the three groups.

Abstract: Reversion at the gl1 locus in maize has been studied by using crosses between 10 gl1 mutants of independent origin and an o2glstsl stock. The observed reversion frequencies have been explained on the basis of intragenic recombination. These frequencies make it possible to detect in the gl1 cistron the existence of different positions where mutational events take place.

Ultrastructural modifications of denervated taste buds

Abstract: The subject of this study is the ultrastructural alterations of the taste-bud cells of the foliate papilla of the rabbit after sectioning of the homolateral glossopharyngeal nerve. In the course of the experiment two different, and successive, degenerative patterns were observed: the first involves type I sensory cells and the development therein of numerous dense inclusion bodies with a marked polymorphism similar to the classic lysosomes in various stages of development. Some assume the character of autophagic vacuoles or cytosegregosomes with cytoplasmic organelles more or less altered. They prefer slightly differentiated cells and, in particular, a type of cell characterized by a clear cytoplasmic matrix and a scarsity of the organelles. The other degenerative pattern, which appertains to the type II cells, overwhelms the entire cytoplasmic organization and rapidly causes the destruction of the cell. Reviewing the cultural industry: from creative industries to digital platforms

Abstract: The goal of the present study is to broadly reconstruct the international debate on the cultural industry, from its origins to today. In particular, the links with other related concepts (creative industries and digital platforms) will be highlighted. The article is divided in three sections: the first reconstructs the origin of the concept, from the 1930s and 1940s, highlighting the theoretical heritage of Adorno and Horkheimer and, more generally, the scholars of the Frankfurt School. Together with Marcuse, those scholars identified, on the one hand, the consonances between industrial mass production and new forms of culture production and, on the other, formulated a radical critique of this change. In the same years in which the theories of this school were disseminated, Morin proposed a less pessimistic view of the same transformation. In the second section, the evolution of the concept of cultural industry during the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 2000s is studied. During this period, the classical theories –after a phase of partial obscurity– were taken up. On one hand a socio-historical perspective emphasized the role played by national industries in shaping contents and styles. On the other hand, a series of scholars enlarged the definition to the creative industries. In the third section, some hypothesis are built about the evolution of the digital platforms and their links with the traditional definition of cultural industry.
