Abstract: The experiment looked at whether children use units intermediate in size between the whole word and single letter during spelling and whether they have greater difficulty generating the correct spelling for phonemes which have several alternate orthographic representations. Children's spelling errors were scored for the conditional probability that the letters in a word were wrong given that the immediately preceding letter was right. It was assumed that these transitional error probabilities would be low between adjacent letters of the same functional unit, but high between adjacent letters of different functional units. The transitional error probabilities were also expected to be higher before letters where there are several alternate plausible spellings. The results indicated that syllables and letter clusters do not function as units, but children do have difficulty with phonemes which have several alternate orthographic representations.
