Abstract: The two-dimensional, plane stress problem of linear elasticity is analyzed within a state space framework The medium considered is homogeneous and isotropic Vlasov's mixed formulation of elasticity is used throughout The field equations are derived in closed form, thus avoiding Vlasov's intermediate infinite series solution Finally, all the properties of the transfer matrix are shown to follow directly from embedding the problem into a state space setting

Abstract: This paper takes the view that the predominant problem of load frequency control (LFC) resides in the low frequency domain assosiated with bulk generation change and which is dominated by limited generation response capability. In this setting LFC is formulated as a tracking problem in which energy source dynamics and load following play a central role. It is shown how load prediction and coordination of area generation in a multi-area interconnection can effectively improve the regulation of inter-area power flows.

TL;DR: The optimal harvesting policy is found, which maximizes the yield subject to a linear ecological or economic constraint, and is shown to consist of harvesting a certain fraction of a primary age group and all of a secondary age group.
Abstract: The optimal equilibrium harvesting policy for an age-specific population of females is investigated. Using a Leslie growth model, we consider admissible harvesting policies in which a certain fraction of each age group is harvested in such a way that the population returns to an identical age configuration after each harvest. The optimal harvesting policy, that policy which maximizes the yield subject to a linear ecological or economic constraint, is found. It is shown to consist of harvesting a certain fraction of a primary age group and all of a secondary age group. The primary age group is younger than, or the same age as, the “surplus” age group, that age group during which the cumulative expected number of daughters born to a female first exceeds one. The secondary age group is older than the surplus age group, though in some cases it is absent from the problem. The two harvesting ages are dependent on the birth and death rates and the economic parameters of the problem.

TL;DR: The results suggest that bronchial drainage is most effective in clearing the larger, more proximal, airways and is of benefit even in the presence of clinical bronchospasm.
Abstract: Examined in this study are the results of six tests of pulmonary function immediately preceding and following bronchial drainage in twenty-six patients with cystic fibrosis. Highly significant increases averaging 5.67, 4.13, 13.47, and 6.98 percent occurred in peak expiratory flow rate, forced vital capacity, expiratory reserve volume, and inspiratory capacity respectively. Significant increases in peak expiratory flow rate, forced vital capacity, and inspiratory capacity were observed in a subgroup of six of the above patients who had evidence of bronchospasm. The authors conclude that bronchial drainage will produce significant increases in routine pulmonary function values. The results suggest that this treatment is most effective in clearing the larger, more proximal, airways and is of benefit even in the presence of clinical bronchospasm.

TL;DR: In this paper, the thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties of segregated PVC composites are studied for volume fractions ranging from 0 to 0.15 Btu/hr ft °F.
Abstract: The thermal conductivity of segregated distributions of poly (vinyl chloride)/nickel (PVC/Ni) and poly(vinyl chloride)/copper (PVC/Cu) was measured for volume fractions ranging from 0 to 0.15. The thermal conductivities increased from 0.15 Btu/hr ft °F for unmodified PVC to 2.79 Btu/hr ft °F for PVC/15 percent Cu. While the thermal conductivity increased smoothly with volume loading, the electrical resistivity decreased discontinuously over fifteen orders of magnitude. Using the parallel slab model as a basis, a semi-empirical model was deduced which described the thermal conductivity as a function of volume loading. With this work, a survey of the thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties of segregated PVC composites is complete.

TL;DR: Results indicate that the actions of tolazoline on sinus rate and gastric acid secretion can be classified as H2-histaminergic, which helps to explain why the drug has so many diverse actions affecting almost every organ in the body.
Abstract: TOLAZOLINE (2-benzyl-2-imidazoline), a peripheral vasodilator and adrenergic blocking agent used to treat peripheral vascular disease and (formerly) hypertension, has actions similar to those of histamine, including vasodilation, pressor responses in the rabbit and stimulation of intestinal smooth muscle, gastric secretion and the heart. The cardiac stimulation has usually been referred to as sympathomimetic. Tachycardia and gastrointestinal distress are prominent clinical side effects of tolazoline. It has been used in place of histamine as a diagnostic agent for gastric function1,2. The effects of tolazoline on gastric acid secretion and heart rate have, however, not been explained adequately in terms of mechanism or receptor theory. We have now been able to investigate this aspect using two specific H2-receptor antagonists3, burimamide and metiamide. Our results indicate that the actions of tolazoline on sinus rate and gastric acid secretion can be classified as H2-histaminergic. Recognition that tolazoline interacts with specific histamine receptors helps to explain why the drug has so many diverse actions affecting almost every organ in the body.

TL;DR: Cefamandole nafate, a new cephalosporin for parenteral use, was evaluated in vitro against 231 recent clinical isolates and in 12 patients and had activity equivalent to cefazolin against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
Abstract: Cefamandole nafate, a new cephalosporin for parenteral use, was evaluated in vitro against 231 recent clinical isolates and in 12 patients. Cefamandole had activity equivalent to cefazolin against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli , and Klebsiella pneumoniae . Cefamandole was more active than cephalothin or cefazolin against Proteus mirabilis . Both cefamandole and cefazolin were as active as cephalothin against S. aureus , were slightly more active against K. pneumoniae , and were considerably more active against E. coli . All strains of indole-positive Proteus sp. were inhibited by 6.3 μg of cefamandole per ml but only 20% were inhibited by 25 μg of cefazolin or cephalothin per ml. Eighty-eight percent of Enterobacter sp. was inhibited by 25 μg of cefamandole per ml, but only 20 and 5% were inhibited by the same concentration of cefazolin and cephalothin, respectively. Peak levels of cefamandole ranged from 6.0 to 110 μg/ml in serum and levels ranged from 440 to 16,800 μg/ml in a 4- to 6-h collection of urine after a 500-mg or 1-g intramuscular dose (6.1 to 17.3 mg/kg) in patients with endogenous creatinine clearances of ≥31 ml/min. These levels were done after the first dose, at mid-therapy, and at the end of therapy. There was no evidence of accumulation with the 500-mg or 1-g dose given every 4 to 6 h. The percentage of the dose excreted in the urine within the first 4 to 6 h after administration of cefamandole was ≥43%. The half-life of cefamandole in serum was 49 to 126 min.

TL;DR: In the human the only relevant input-output relationship in motoneurons is that the net excitation adjusts the firing rate, and this relationship is similar to that of neuron models and cat mot oneurons.
Abstract: The activity of single motor units contributing to small tonic isometric contractions in human muscle at different muscular lengths was analyzed. The form of motor unit firing patterns shows that the interspike intervals compose independent sequences with about a 10% coefficient of variation and have a gamma distribution. The variability and the distribution shape curves show that as the mean interval decreases the variance also decreases and the interval density function becomes more symmetric. More significant is the fact that the form of the firing pattern remains unchanged when a motor unit has the same mean interval but with the muscle at different lengths. Comparison of these facts with experimental data from neuron models and cat motoneurons indicates that in the human the only relevant input-output relationship in motoneurons is that the net excitation adjusts the firing rate.
