Abstract: An ethnographic study was conducted into the style of conversation registered nurses used with elderly residents during activities of morning care. Speech was analysed into basic components of speech act categories (e.g. explanation, instruction, reassurance). Patterns of speech style were seen to vary in relation to the physical procedure being carried out, and to function as an adjunct to the smooth execution of this physical activity. However, they were also seen to have an important psychological function reflecting a particular way of relating. Some morning-care activities--the journey--were associated with a more personally engaging social interaction which appeared to be mutually beneficial to nurse and resident. Other approaches to morning care--the dissection--appeared to constrain the way the nurse interacted, producing a more formal style of relating. Findings were discussed in terms of optimal use of physical activities of nursing care to achieve greatest benefit in relation to the psychological needs of the resident, as addressed through verbal interaction.

TL;DR: A novel bidirectional promoter element of fowlpox virus was characterized by transcription analysis, transient expression assays, and recombinant virus construction and should prove to be an important tool in defining the sequences required for the temporal regulation of poxvirus genes.

TL;DR: In this article, the interyarn forces present in an unset pure wool gabardine fabric and two other fabrics obtained by subjecting the unset fabric to different levels of permanent set by dyeing under different conditions have been assessed by determining the extent to which the length of the warp yarn changes on release from the fabrics at different regains.
Abstract: The interyarn forces present in an unset pure wool gabardine fabric and two other fabrics obtained by subjecting the unset fabric to different levels of permanent set by dyeing under different conditions have been assessed by determining the extent to which the length of the warp yarn changes on release from the fabrics at different regains. As the level of permanent set increases, the interyarn forces at saturation are reduced through stabilization of the bending strains. On drying, cohesive setting sta bilizes the residual bending strains, and this effect appears to be the dominant one in reducing interyarn forces. The effects of fiber deswelling in reducing interyarn forces (and of fiber swelling in increasing the forces) are relatively unimportant. At low regains, longitudinal strains in the weft yams are evident in each fabric. The changes in fabric geometry that occur are rationalized in terms of the combined effects of fiber swelling/deswelling and the interyarn forces.

TL;DR: In this paper, the ultimate tensile properties of a wool yam before and after chemical modification were determined as a function of temperature, strain rate, and regain of the yam under a wide range of conditions.
Abstract: The ultimate tensile properties have been determined for a wool yam before and after chemical modification as a function of temperature, strain rate, and regain. Under the conditions prevailing at failure, wool behaves viscoelastically, the breaking stress and breaking strain each varying with the test conditions. Applying the WLF equation allows data obtained at different temperatures to be superposed to give master curves showing breaking stress or strain as a function of reduced strain rate at a chosen reference temperature. Failure envelopes give the locus of failure in tensile deformation under a wide range of conditions. Possible reasons are presented for the fracture be havior of the different wools.

TL;DR: Two cases of hand dermatitis due to contact with the plant Alstroemeria (Peruvian Lily) are recorded in Victoria.
Abstract: Summary Two cases of hand dermatitis due to contact with the plant Alstroemeria (Peruvian Lily) are recorded. This plant has been increasingly used for making floral decorations during the last decade. As it is available throughout the year in Victoria more cases are likely to be discovered in the community.

TL;DR: In these two cases the acneiform changes were atypical and the histories suggest an association with the use of the cow udder ointment, used by many patients to treat psoriasis.
Abstract: Sir I would like to report two cases of a widespread and atypical acneiform eruption which may be related to the use of a cow udder ointment (which apparently contains boric acid and starch in a wax and oild base).' Case 1 was a 56 year old man who had a long history suggestive of atopic eczema. As well as topical steroids he had used udder ointment. Examination showed masses of open comedones across both cheeks, arms and trunk. Some areas also showed a nodular change. This eruption cleared upuon ceasing the ointment and after antibiotics had been administered for several months. Case 2 was a 68 year old woman who presented with an extensive comedonal change on her face. She claimed that this began suddenly several months before. Cow udder ointment was being used to treat psoriasis, although she denied applying this to her face. With the use of vitamin A acid cream and less frequent use of the udder ointment the comedones cleared. In these two cases the acneiform changes were atypical and the histories suggest an association with the use of the cow udder ointment. The cause and clinical features are somewhat suggestive of chloracne\ I know of at least one other case where there has been a suspicion of an association between the use of the ointment and an acneiform eruption (personal communication: Dr Annette Callan) and it would seem to be more than coincidental. Cow udder ointment is used by many patients to treat psoriasis. The frequency of the above reaction is unknown but it would seem to be uncommon. Timothy J. TL;DR: Three cases of a rarely described syndrome of posture‐induced tremor of the legs and trunk, which occurs with standing but resolves with walking, sitting and lying, are described.
Abstract: Three cases of a rarely described syndrome of posture-induced tremor of the legs and trunk, which occurs with standing but resolves with walking, sitting and lying, are described. This syndrome occurs in elderly patients and, in the three patients described, responded dramatically to a small dosage of clonazepam.

Abstract: Trends in prescribing the dawn of DUSC To the Editor: May I offer some comments on \"Trends in prescribing the dawn of DUSC\". I Many doctors, includingme, prescribeclofibrate when indicated mainly because of its \"capsular\" presentation which makes it very acceptable when compared to the \"liquid cement\"-Iike taste complained of by my patients when taking cholestyramine or colestipol. Also, the author is apparently not aware of the fact that clofibrate, like cholestyramine, is available only on authority prescription, whileprobucol is not commonly used because it has to meet more stringent requirements than the other lipidlowering drugs.
