TL;DR: A novel version of the k-nearest neighbour algorithm that starts the query in a randomly chosen peer and terminates the query as soon as possible is proposed.
Abstract: The main objective of this work is the proposal of a decentralized data structure storing a large amount of data under the assumption that it is not possible or convenient to use a single workstation to host all data. The index is distributed over a computer network and the performance of the search, insert, delete operations are close to the traditional indices that use a single workstation. It is based on k-d trees and it is distributed across a network of "peers", where each one hosts a part of the tree and uses message passing for communication between peers. In particular, we propose a novel version of the k-nearest neighbour algorithm that starts the query in a randomly chosen peer and terminates the query as soon as possible. Preliminary experiments have demonstrated that in about 65% of cases it starts a query in a random peer that does not involve the peer containing the root of the tree and in the 98% of cases it terminates the query in a peer that does not contain the root of the tree.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Synthetic Jets (SJets) were used to control a separated flow over a back-facing ramp in wind tunnel tests at height-based Reynolds number of 10700 using planar Particle Image Velocimetry.
Abstract: Flow control via Synthetic Jets (SJs) is experimentally studied for a separated flow over a back-facing ramp in wind tunnel tests at height-based Reynolds number of 10700 using planar Particle Image Velocimetry. Two cases, i.e., either without control (baseline) or controlled by means of SJs, have been investigated. The effectiveness of the control is achieved through a momentum addition of c u = 3.0 × 10-3 at a reduced frequency F+ = 0.34. Under the SJs control, the separated region undergoes a reduction in length of 62% of that observed for the baseline case.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the damage behavior of delaminated composite specimens subjected to compressive load using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) to obtain information on the delamination propagation during the experiment.
Abstract: The continuous demand of lightweight structures characterized by high load-carrying capabilities has led to an increasing use of composite materials. However, despite the outstanding properties of this kind of materials, uncertainties still exist on their complex damage behavior. For such a reason, extensive investigation, from both an experimental and numerical perspective, is mandatory. This work aims to investigate the damage behavior of delaminated composite specimens subjected to compressive load. The strain and displacement fields are monitored by using Digital Image Correlation (DIC), in order to obtain information on the delamination propagation during the experiment. The acquired data can be used, supported by Finite element analyses, to help the understanding of such complex phenomenon.

TL;DR: In this paper, the static load test methods with a focus on the sine-burst quasi-static load test are presented, and a test procedure is presented in order to overcome the main issues related to a sineburst test.
Abstract: Satellites are designed and tested to withstand to static and dynamic operative loads during the launch and the ascent phase. The validation of the structural design of the satellite is generally performed by tests and/or analysis. The paper presents the static load test methods with a focus on the sine-burst quasi-static load test. A test procedure will be presented in order to overcome the main issues related to a sine-burst test. Finally test results performed on a 6U Cubesat will be discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system for separation assurance and collision avoidance for Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) is presented, which is an integrated system for Separation Assurance and Collision Avoidance, designed for the implementation in the RPAS domain.
Abstract: Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast equipment is increasingly becoming a fundamental means to support cooperative surveillance in the aviation section, including both manned conventional aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles. The importance of the ADS-B is further increased by its ability to support Detect and Avoid (DAA) systems, which are able to act both as decision support systems for human pilot onboard manned vehicles and for remote pilots in case of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) and as automatic systems implemented onboard unmanned aerial vehicles performing fully automatic missions. Such considerations emphasize that the ADS-B technology is able to play the role of enabling technology for the implementation of single pilot operations on manned vehicles and for the integration of unmanned vehicles (totally automatic or remotely piloted) into the Air Traffic Management (ATM) system. In this paper, a system is outlined that has been designed by CIRA in order to exploit the ADS-B as cooperative surveillance sensor supporting the Detect and Avoid applications. In particular, the systems that is here outlined is an integrated system for Separation Assurance and Collision Avoidance, designed for the implementation in the RPAS domain. In the paper, therefore, first a review of the evolution of the CIRA designed system for DAA is provided and, then, an outline of the ADS-B based DAA systems is reported. Finally, some numerical applications are indicated to show the system behavior.
