TL;DR: Cultures of a colonial strain display a phase of slow growth; the induction of this phase is traced to the production of MP by the mold.
Abstract: Neurospora produces a mucopolysaccharide (called MP) which inhibits its growth, causes vacuolation and agglutination of its cells, and precipitates its purified membrane protein. Cultures of a colonial strain display a phase of slow growth; the induction of this phase is traced to the production of MP by the mold. Stationary-phase cultures of wild type also produce MP. MP is a polymer of galactosamine, its amino groups only partially acetylated, probably containing other minor components. MP molecular weight is approximately 106. Complete acetylation abolishes the biological activities of MP. It is suggested that the regulatory effect of MP is mediated by its interaction with the protoplasmic membrane.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used an adiabatic method to show that a positron and a hydrogen atom (H) cannot form a bound state, and showed that the existence of such bound states is extremely unlikely.
Abstract: One needs a necessary condition (rather than a sufficient condition, such as that of Rayleigh-Ritz) to even attempt to prove that a given bound state cannot exist. We use an adiabaticlike method to show that a positron (${e}^{+}$) and a hydrogen atom (H) cannot form a bound state. The separation $r$ (but not $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}}$) of the proton ($p$) and ${e}^{+}$ is fixed; working in a subspace of zero total angular momentum, we calculate the lowest energy ${E}_{\mathrm{e}1}(r)$ of the electron in the field of ${e}^{+}$ and $p$. An effective one-body $p+{e}^{+}$ potential is then defined by ${V}^{(1)}(r)={E}_{\mathrm{e}1}(r)+\frac{{e}^{2}}{r}+\frac{{e}^{2}}{2{a}_{0}}$. The necessary condition for the existence of a bound state of the true $\mathrm{H}+{e}^{+}$ system is the existence of a bound state of an artificial $p+{e}^{+}$ system with an interaction ${V}^{(1)}(r)$. This one-body problem is readily solved, and we find that it (and therefore the true problem) has no bound state. The proof is not rigorous since ${E}_{\mathrm{e}1}(r)$ is not determined exactly, but the accuracy attained is such as to make the existence of an $\mathrm{H}+{e}^{+}$ bound state extremely unlikely. A by-product of the calculation is the determination of an improved lower bound on the ground-state energy of ${\mathrm{H}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$.

TL;DR: The book had the greatest sale of any on an economic subject to that date; in fact, sales were about 100,000 as mentioned in this paper, which was the best sales of any book to date.
Abstract: steadily increasing wealth, and its land reform message, evoked a strong response during the 1880s. Land reformers, politicians, journalists, socialists and large numbers of the general populace, as well as the professional economists, were all affected. The book had the greatest sale of any on an economic subject to that date; in fact, sales were about 100,000

TL;DR: In this article, a sensitive and rapid potentiometric method for the determination of mg quantities of silver is described, where the silver solution is adjusted to the proper pH and temperature, and then titrated with a standard thioacetamide solution potentiometrically.
Abstract: A sensitive and rapid potentiometric method for the determination of mg quantities of silver is described. The silver solution is adjusted to the proper pH and temperature, and then titrated with a standard thioacetamide solution potentiometrically. A mercury drop-saturated calomel electrode pair was employed for end point detection.

TL;DR: It was suggested that a generalization decrement in the effect of graduated exposure resulting from exposure to conditions similar to, but not the same as, those present during the acquisition of fear would be offset during free exposure where a graduated procedure would result in a greater amount of exposure than a non-graduated procedure.
Abstract: Contrary to a prediction from counterconditioning theory, forced, graduated exposure was less effective in reducing feat than forced, non-graduated exposure. This finding was interpreted to reflect a generalization decrement in the effect of graduated exposure resulting from exposure to conditions similar to, but not the same as, those present during the acquisition of fear. It was suggested, however, that this decrement would be offset during free exposure where, in contrast to forced exposure, a graduated procedure would result in a greater amount of exposure than a non-graduated procedure.
