TL;DR: Results indicate strong superiority computationally for the Davidon and BFGS update over the self-scaling update, except on a special class of functions, the homogeneous functions.
Abstract: In a series of recent papers, Oren, Oren and Luenberger, Oren and Spedicato, and Spedicato have developed the self-scaling variable metric algorithms These algorithms alter Broyden's single parameter family of approximations to the inverse Hessian to a double parameter family Conditions are given on the new parameter to minimize a bound on the condition number of the approximated inverse Hessian while insuring improved step-wise convergence Davidon has devised an update which also minimizes the bound on the condition number while remaining in the Broyden single parameter family This paper derives initial scalings for the approximate inverse Hessian which makes members of the Broyden class self-scaling The Davidon, BFGS, and Oren—Spedicato updates are tested for computational efficiency and stability on numerous test functions, with the results indicating strong superiority computationally for the Davidon and BFGS update over the self-scaling update, except on a special class of functions, the homogeneous functions

Abstract: The paper compares the numerical performances of the LDL′ decomposition of the BFGS variable-metric algorithm, the Dennis-Mei dogleg algorithm on the BFGS update, and Davidon's projections with the BFGS update with the straight BFGS update on a number of standard test problems. Numerical results indicate that the standard BFGS algorithm is superior to all of the more complex strategies.

Abstract: A general and linear relationship is found between the fireball mass ${M}^{*}$ and the multiplicity $〈n〉$ of mesons from $\mathrm{pp}$ collisions and $\overline{p}p$ annihilations, the characteristics of ${M}^{*}$ being determined by the scaling parameter used to modify the Bose-Einstein distribution. In the scaling limit, this relationship is identical with the well known power law $〈n〉\ensuremath{\propto}{E}^{\frac{1}{2}}$ A remark is made on its extension to asymmetric fireballs such as pion-nucleon collisions.

TL;DR: In this article, the pion form factor was used to predict the existence of a dip at the cost of the sensitivity of the dip structure due to the variation of the shape of the form factor.
Abstract: With some knowledge of the pion form factor, we study $\ensuremath{\pi}p$ elastic scattering within the Chou-Yang model. We find it agrees very well with recent Fermilab measurements and we predict the existence of a dip at $\ensuremath{-}t=4\ensuremath{-}5$ ${\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$. The sensitivity of the dip structure due to the variation of the shape of the pion form factor is studied.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the properties of high-energy nuclear reactions in terms of the Maxwell distribution and found that the energy dependence of the temperature for $p$-nucleus reactions follows an empirical power law similar to that for meson production.
Abstract: Properties of fragments from high-energy nuclear reactions are investigated in terms of the Maxwell distribution. It is found that the energy dependence of the temperature for $p$-nucleus reactions follows an empirical power law similar to that for meson production. Remarks are made about the Lorentz transformaton of temperature and about heavy-ion reactions.

TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that the Frattini subalgebra of a finite distributive lattice can be characterized in terms of elements in ℒ(FD).
Abstract: Following G. Birkhoff, the Frattini sublattice Φ(L) of a latticeL is defined as the intersection of all its maximal proper sublattices. Let ℒ(FD) be the class of all finite distributive lattices. The main aim in this note is to provide a new but elementary characterization of elements in Φ(L),L∈ℒ(FD), and also an extremely simple algorithm for determining the Frattini sublattice of any finite distributive lattice. By applying this algorithm, it is shown that there is a new way to determine the Frattini subalgebra of a finite Stone algebra.

Abstract: A graceful graph on n vertices is said to be simple if each of its connected components has at most one cycle and the component containing the edge with end points labelled 1 and n has no cycle. Let sn and tn denote the numbers of simple graceful graphs and graceful trees on n vertices respectively. Then tn≦sn≦p(An-2) where p(An-2) is the permanent (plus determinant) of the (n-2)×(n-2) matrix An-2=(aij) defined by: Open image in new window More specifically, let ci denote the number of simple graceful graphs on n vertices with i cycles (i=0,1,2,...,k, where k=[(n-2)/3]). Then we have Open image in new window

TL;DR: The maximum physical effective crosslinking density of the vulcanizates appeared to be when p-quinone dioxime and the oxidizing agent were equimolar as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The vulcanization of butyl rubber by p-quinone dioxime oxidized by red lead and tetrachloroquinone was investigated. The maximum physical effective crosslinking density of the vulcanizates appeared to be when p-quinone dioxime and the oxidizing agent were equimolar. The formation of one physical effective crosslink required one molecule of p-quinone dioxime. Chemical reactions are suggested for the vulcanization steps.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the fiscal arrangement between the Federal Government and the State Governments of Peninsular Malaysia and found that the transfer of federal grants as a form of fiscal adjustment fails to equalize regional fiscal imbalance, as the allotment system favours the rich states.
Abstract: The paper examines the fiscal arrangement between the Federal Government and the State Governments of Peninsular Malaysia. The transfer of federal grants as a form of fiscal adjustment fails to equalize regional fiscal imbalance, as the allotment system favours the rich states. This increases regional growth differentials of the country.
