TL;DR: A periglacial pediment of Devensian date has been identified, buried beneath the deposits of the River Nene in Northamptonshire in UK.
Abstract: Summary A periglacial pediment of Devensian date has been identified, buried beneath the deposits of the River Nene in Northamptonshire. Following this discovery, the river deposits of selected valleys in central and southern England are investigated. The morphology and date of the sample deposits illustrate that the formation of sub-planar surfaces was widespread in the valleys of the Devensian tundra zone. The processes responsible for the erosion of these surface are discussed, and the detailed forms associated with the fossil Devensian pediment are examined, so that further examples may be readily identified.

TL;DR: In this article, a modulator circuit is connected to the signal generator circuit for controlling it to alter the frequency of the operation thereof, and a capacitor is connected in parallel with the series combination of the two inverters and all of the inverters are formed on a single integrated circuit package.
Abstract: In a circuit for producing an audible signal, a sounder is connected to an audio frequency signal generator circuit for producing the audible signal. A modulator circuit is connected to the signal generator circuit for controlling it to alter the frequency of the operation thereof. The signal generator circuit and the modulator circuit each comprise two inverters connected in series with a resistor connected in parallel with one of the two inverters. A capacitor is connected in parallel with the series combination of the two inverters and all of the inverters are formed on a single integrated circuit package.

TL;DR: Overall fewer side-effects were reported as the trial continued, and 15 patients commented that they felt better on pindolol, and 14 patients were able to stop methyldopa therapy completely.
Abstract: SummaryAn open study was carried out in 50 hypertensive patients, inadequately controlled or experiencing side-effects with methyldopa, to assess the effects of concomitant treatment with pindolol. In the 41 patients completing the trial, mean supine blood pressures were reduced from 177 j 108 mmHg to 159/96 mmHg after 12 weeks of pindolol therapy {mean dose 33 mg/day). Mean methyldopa dosage was reduced from 921 mg to 445 mg daily by the end of the trial, and 14 patients were able to stop methyldopa therapy completely. Three of the 9 patients who withdrew did so because of side-effects, but overall fewer side-effects were reported as the trial continued, and 15 patients commented that they felt better on pindolol.

TL;DR: In a multicentre evaluation in general practice involving 104 patients, Syndol, a formulation containing paracetamol, codeine phosphate, caffeine, and doxylamine succinate, was shown to be highly effective in treating the organic and psychogenic symptoms of Tension Headache in 81·7% of patients as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: In a multicentre evaluation in general practice involving 104 patients, Syndol, a formulation containing paracetamol, codeine phosphate, caffeine, and doxylamine succinate, was shown to be highly effective in treating the organic and psychogenic symptoms of Tension Headache in 81·7% of patients. The evaluation was performed in six widely differing practices in the United Kingdom. The result confirms the findings of other investigators in South Africa both in the efficacy of the drug and the incidence of Tension Headache in the general population. Drowsiness was the most common side-effect, indicating that the formulation provided sufficient calmative activity, especially in those patients where tension was a major component of their symptoms.

TL;DR: In two centres a total of 50 patients with anxiety neurosis was studied in a randomised, between patient, double blind comparison of the therapeutic efficacies of two new anxiolytic agents, oxypertine (Integrin) and medazepam (Nobrium).
Abstract: In two centres a total of 50 patients with anxiety neurosis was studied in a randomised, between patient, double blind comparison of the therapeutic efficacies of two new anxiolytic agents, oxypertine (Integrin) and medazepam (Nobrium). Treatment was continued for four weeks. Assessments were made using the Middlesex Hospital Questionnaire (MHQ), the Hamilton Anxiety Scale and the Graphic Scale. On all three ratings both agents produced a significant improvement in the patients' condition. Significant differences between the two agents were recorded by the MHQ sub tests and total score. Phobic anxiety responded significantly better to medazepam (p < 0·03). Depression responded significantly better to oxypertine (p < 0·02) which was also associated with a greater improvement in three of the remaining four sub tests and a significantly greater reduction in score for overall neuroticism (p < 0·05).

TL;DR: An open, comparative, multicentre trial of Vanquin tablets and Pripsen granules for threadworm infestation found positive results from a peri-anal skin test at the start of treatment and results were negative after twenty-one days.
Abstract: Thirty-eight patients presenting to their general practitioner with threadworm infestation were admitted to an open, comparative, multicentre trial of Vanquin tablets and Pripsen granules. Efficacy and tolerance were assessed. Twelve of nineteen patients treated with Vanquin had positive results from a peri-anal skin test at the start of treatment, all results were negative after twenty-one days. Fourteen of nineteen patients treated with Pripsen had positive results at the start of treatment and two of these had positive results after twenty-one days. One patient treated with Vanquin and five treated with Pripsen reported side-effects.

TL;DR: Chlorthalidone was found to be significantly better than placebo in both reducing the incidence of attacks and the consumption of glyceryl trinitrate.
Abstract: Following the reports of Floyd (1966) and Floyd & Domenet (1972) a study was conducted on the effect of adding 50 mg of chlorthalidone (Hygroton®) or a matching placebo to the usual antianginal regime of 25 patients. The study was a double blind comparison between chlorthalidone 50 mg tablets and a matching placebo; each patient received both treatments. Chlorthalidone was found to be significantly better than placebo in both reducing the incidence of attacks and the consumption of glyceryl trinitrate. Chlorthalidone reduced the day-time anginal attack rate by 38% as compared with the placebo attack rate. This improvement is of the same order as that achieved by beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agents in similar types of trial. A marked variation in response was found between different types of patients. The earlier investigations with diuretics in angina are reviewed, and a possible explanation for the advantageous effect of chlorthalidone is offered.
