TL;DR: The ophiolites of New Caledonia are composed of ultramafics overlain by mafic rocks, all of which were affected by low P metamorphism.
Abstract: The ophiolites of New Caledonia are composed of ultramafics overlain by mafic rocks, all of which were affected by low P metamorphism. The mafic rocks studied (gabbroic cumulates, and basaltic flows and dikes) from Montagne des Sources are similar to recent mid-ocean ridge rocks. They are olivine-normative with Mg/Mg+Fe2+ ratios ranging from 0.69 in lavas to 0.90 in gabbroic cumulates and show tholeiitic fractionation trends such as a negative correlation of Ti and V with the Mg/Fe ratio. The lavas have a flat REE pattern with a slight depletion of light REE and a La/Yb ratio <2. The dikes have three different types of REE patterns. The first type is nearly parallel to that of lavas, the second one is enriched in LREE (La/Yb∼4) and the third type with the lowest REE contents and a distinct LREE depletion is similar to that of cumulitic pyroxene gabbro. The variations in chemical compositions of the mafic rocks can be accounted for by the dynamic partial melting process of Langmuir et al. (1977). In agreement with structural and tectonic observations, the geochemical data suggests that the ophiolites were formed during the spreading of a mid-ocean ridge with a spreading half-rate of about 1 cm/ year.

TL;DR: A series of menhaden oils collected at various stages of processing have been analyzed for zinc, cadmium, lead, copper and arsenic by wet digestion and electrothermal atomization-atomic absorption spectrophotometry (aas) as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: A series of menhaden oils collected at various stages of processing have been analyzed for zinc, cadmium, lead, copper and arsenic by wet digestion and electrothermal atomization-atomic absorption spectrophotometry (aas). The results are compared, for some metals, with 2 other methods of oil treatment: extraction with nitric acid and dilution with methyl isobutyl ketone. Both the extraction and dilution procedures appeared to measure only the loosely bound, inorganic portion of the metals: determination of the total metal content including organometallics required wet digestion. The crude oil contained the largest metal burden but successive refining steps reduced the metal content to a level which met the FAO/WHO Codex standards. Hydrogenation did not significantly alter the metal concentration in the oils.

TL;DR: The Bandas belt, one of two prominent Archaean greenstone belts in the Central African Republic (Equatorial Africa), is ca. 250 km long as discussed by the authors and consists of two lithostratigraphic units: the lower unit is composed predominantly of volcanic rocks and the upper one contains mainly metasedimentary rocks.

TL;DR: In this paper, a negotiating approach to bring absences to a reasonable level in both cost and disciplinary terms is proposed and developed subsequently, leading to the argument that rates of casual absences might be changed by employer-employee negotiation of agreed levels.
Abstract: SUMMARY Absence figures show similar rising trends in a number of national surveys. Most of the figures utilize the Time Lost measure which is heavily weighted by sickness leaves. In general, the national computations of 'absenteeism' are inadequate for a variety of reasons, which are discussed. Previous attempts are summarized to relate absence rates to such factors as overtime, strikes, sex roles and an array of correlates. Techniques, managerial and psychological, for controlling absence levels are discussed and cost analysis of absence is also covered. The notion of an acceptable level in both cost and disciplinary terms is suggested and a negotiating approach to bringing absences to this level is proposed and developed subsequently. Thus, consideration of absence data within the North American context, leads to the argument that rates of casual absences might be changed by employer-employee negotiation of agreed levels. Possible reasons for management reticence over absence information are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the dielectric constant of β rhombohedral boron was measured at 9.5 GHz, at room temperature, using a cavity perturbation technique.
Abstract: The dielectric constant of ultrahigh purity (Wacker-Chemie) β rhombohedral boron was measured at 9.5 GHz, at room temperature, using a cavity perturbation technique. The samples were in the form of spheres, approximately 2 mm in diameter, with less than 1% asphericity. The observed value of the dielectric constant for these boron specimens was 8 ± 0.5, which is approximately 25% smaller than the value reported earlier for the low frequency of the spectrum. For comparison, samples of Teflon and paraffin wax were also measured in the same apparatus, yielding values which were within 10% of the published values.

TL;DR: In this paper, two known multidimensional transportation problems are solved within the framework of statistical linear regression theory methodology by converting them essentially as extensions of two dimensional transportation problems, and the methodology is illustrated by numerical examples.
Abstract: A certain analogy that exists between the mathematical formulation of the standard two dimensional quadratic cost transportation problem as a minimum value problem and the mathematical formulation as a minimum value problem of the maximum likelihood estimation of the regression coefficient matrix of a multivariate normal linear regression model, subjected to double linear restrictions, is utilized to demonstrate that the transportation problem can be solved within the framework of available statistical linear regression theory methodology. Two known multidimensional transportation problems are solved within the framework of statistical linear regression theory methodology by converting them essentially as extensions of two dimensional transportation problems. The methodology is illustrated by numerical examples.

Abstract: A new concept in mathematical modeling—fuzzy set theory—allows for the explicit consideration of “professional expertise and judgment.” This article introduces fuzzy set theory to the library community “at-large” by providing (i) a brief historical perspective on fuzzy sets; (ii) an introduction to the fundamentals of fuzzy set theory; (iii) an avenue of approach for applications of the theory in a library environment; and (iv) suggestions for future development of fuzzy applications in the library management area.

TL;DR: In this paper, alternative proofs of some of KSHIRSAGAR's (1971) results on testing discriminant functions or canonical variables in the vector space of fixed variates are given.
Abstract: Alternative proofs of some of KSHIRSAGAR's (1971) results on testing discriminant functions or canonical variables in the vector space of fixed variates are given. These results are derived in terms of the original variates unlike KSHIRSAGAR (1971) who derives the results by using random orthogonal transformations and triangular decompositions of the original matrix variates.

TL;DR: For example, this paper found that adolescent girls aspiring to traditional women's occupations find the local opportunity structure suitable for their goals; that marriage as a career goal for women may be a positive motivating factor for migration and may in fact explain sex differences in rates and kinds of schooling and motives for migration.
Abstract: Longitudinal analysis of sex differences in the relationships between education and migration among Nova Scotia [Canada] youth reveals that post-secondary educational aspirations and actual post-secondary attainment are significantly related to migration among males but not among females. As compared to young women young men tend to continue their education more to migrate greater distances and to attend universities and technology institutions; whereas women attend institutions leading to traditional womens occupations located in their origin communities or within the province. The findings "indicate that adolescent girls aspiring to traditional womens occupations find the local opportunity structure suitable for their goals; that marriage as a career goal for women may be a positive motivating factor for migration and may in fact explain sex differences in rates and kinds of schooling and motives for migration." Abstract: A simple model for a problem in combustion theory has multiple steady state solutions when a parameter is in a certain range. This note deals with the initial value problem when the initial temperature takes the form of a hot spot. Estimates on the extent and temperature of the spot for the steady state solution to be super-critical are obtained.
