TL;DR: Of the domesticated species of animals, horses are probably most refractory to effects of analgesic drugs, and a great need exists for effective agents that produce a sedative and analgesic effect in this species.
Abstract: Of the domesticated species of animals, horses are probably most refractory to effects of analgesic drugs. At the same time, a great need exists for effective agents that produce a sedative and analgesic effect in this species. A striking example of this occurred in 1975 when the magnificent filly, Ruffian, broke her leg in a match race at New York’s Belmont Park. She was treated by a team of four veterinarians and an orthopedic surgeon. During recovery from anesthesia she struggled desperately and destroyed the fixation device that had been applied. A decision for euthanasia was made 8 h after the race.

TL;DR: In this article, the results of a study on ultrabasic rock weathering under subtropical climate are presented, where the mineralogical evolution leads to the formation of nontronite and amorphous materials from the wrathering of mafic-silicates, while the plagioclase in the same rock, yields kaolinite and montmorilonite.
Abstract: Results of a study on ultrabasic rock weathering under subtropical climate are presented. The mineralogical evolution leads to the formation of nontronite and amorphous materials from the wrathering of mafic-silicates, while the plagioclase, in the same rock, yields kaolinite and montmorilonite. The transformation of amorphous materials into goethite occurs in the soil and the clay minerals are preserved as aluminous nontronite. The weathering action leads to strong loss of Mg and Ca, with partial retention of Si. Mg loss is more intense than that of Ca when both are components of silicates. If Ca is a carbonate component, as occurs in the serpentinites, its mobilization is quicker than that of Mg. Fe can be partially mobilized when it is contained in mafic silicates, but when it is a component of magnetite, as in serpentinites, Fe becomes absolutely fixed. Al and Ti are flxed. Mn, Cr, Ni, Co, V and Cu have the same behavior as Fe. Na behaves as Ca. During the first stages of weathering, K is lost, but it is fixed again in the soil by organic compounds and clay minerals. The groundwater and supergenic mineral compositions are in equilibrium, and both indicate a sialferrtzation weathering type. The relative mobilities, based on the groundwater composition, show some differences as compared to the mobilities based on the use of the solid phase composition. Such differences are caused by some imprecisions in the methods themselves.

TL;DR: In this article, age interpretation and the calculation of growth parameters of the "jundia" from the Santa Catarina Swamps, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil were dealt with.
Abstract: This study deals with age interpretation and the calculation of growth parameters of the “jundia”, Rhamdia quelen (QUOY & GAIMARD, 1824) from the Santa Catarina Swamps, State os Rio Grande do Sul. Ageing was determined through reading and counting of the hyaline zones of otoliths and in vertebrae. Ageing of both structures resulted very similar. Their validity was supported by the formation of one hyaline and one opaque zone per year. There is a close relationship between zone formation, air temperature and growth of the fish. Growth curves for each sex were calculated through otoliths and vertebrae. The growth equation of von BERTALANFFY (1938) was adjusted to the length-at-agr data, using a functinal rearession (RICKER, 1973) of the FORD-WALFORD expression., in order to obtain an estimator of the asymptotic lenght (L ∞ ); then expression of BEVERTON (1954), provided na estimator of the catabolism coefficient (k), which allowed to calculate length-at-age values with minimum residual variances. Sex-ratio, weight / length relationship, variation of the condition fator (k), lifespan (A 0,95 ) and annual rate of survival (S) for each sex, was also analused.
