TL;DR: The diastolic phase of pressure pulses recorded over a segment of the thoracic aorta several centimeters long centered about 4 cm cephalad to the dorsal insertion of the diaphragm could be closely approximated by a straight line on a semilogarithmic scale and correlated well with concomitant variations in peripheral vascular resistance.
Abstract: Large changes in stroke volume and peripheral vascular resistance were induced by varying the heart rate and by intra-aortically infusing acetylcholine or angiotensin II in six dogs with heart block and electromagnetic flowmeters chronically implanted around their ascending aortas. Changes in stroke volume, aortic and atrial pressures, and systemic resistance were monitored continuously for 3-6 hours under morphine-pentobarbital anesthesia. The characteristics of diastolic pressure decay at heart rates ranging from 60 beats/min to 200 beats/min and during transient periods of asystole were studied, especially with reference to the distortions caused by reflected pressure waves. The diastolic phase of pressure pulses recorded over a segment of the thoracic aorta several centimeters long centered about 4 cm cephalad to the dorsal insertion of the diaphragm could be closely approximated by a straight line on a semilogarithmic scale. Under the conditions of these experiments, changes in the slope of that line and of its reciprocal, the time constant, correlated well with concomitant variations in peripheral vascular resistance. This relationship appears to be of practical value for continuous monitoring of systemic resistance directly from the diastolic segments of pressure pulses recorded from the lower thoracic aorta.

TL;DR: The heart muscle cells of eight pigs 18 days, 30 days, 6 months, and 8 months old were isolated by potash lye and hints at the mitotic origin of the nuclear rows are micronuclei and nuclear bridges.
Abstract: The heart muscle cells of eight pigs 18 days, 30 days, 6 months, and 8 months old were isolated by potash lye Most cells contain 2, 4, 8, or 16 nuclei of equal or unequal size The part of cells with 4, 8, or 16 nuclei increases between the age of 18 days and 6 months Most nuclei are diploid but larger ones are polyploid with a DNA content up to 32C There are topographical differences between the parts of the heart with the highest proportion of multinuclear cells at the base of the left ventricle and the lowest in the right heart Hints at the mitotic origin of the nuclear rows are micronuclei and nuclear bridges The isolation procedure permits cytophotometric DNA measurements after Feulgen stain Furthermore the percentage of nuclear rows not corresponding to a total DNA of 4, 8, 16, or 32 diploid nuclei makes it possible to estimate the frequency of fragmentations during the isolation procedure It comes up to approximately 5% of the cells

TL;DR: The hypothesis that the antennae of insects as air current sense organs have anything to do with the control of movements which are dependent on the surrounding air for their stimulation has been tested and is reported below.
Abstract: THE function of the antennae of insects as air current sense organs and their relationship to flight control has already been investigated by behavioural studies in flies, bees and locusts1–6, all of which are excellent fliers. The dragonfly is also an excellent flier although it possesses a very different flight apparatus7–9. Even though flight is apparently influenced by the eyes and the neck sense organs of the dragonfly10,11, it seems unlikely that these organs have anything to do with the control of movements which are dependent on the surrounding air for their stimulation. For the measurement of flying speed relative to the surrounding air, for example, one might expect that, just as in the other insects, the antennae play an important and specific role. It is this hypothesis which has been tested in the present work, the results of which are reported below.

TL;DR: In this article, the saddle-point field of a wave packet (a pulsed beam) in a homogeneous medium with moderate absorption is calculated using the saddle point method. And the packet velocity v is approximately equal to the real part of ∂ω S /∂k S where k S, ω S are the saddlepoint values of the propagation vector and the angular frequency.
Abstract: Hamilton's equations for geometric optics contain the quantity ∂ω/∂k which is complex in absorbing media. To investigate its physical meaning, the field of a wave packet (a pulsed beam) in a homogeneous medium with moderate absorption is calculated using the saddle-point method. The packet velocity v is approximately equal to the real part of ∂ω S /∂k S where k S , ω S are the saddle-point values of the propagation vector and the angular frequency. The imaginary part of ∂ω S /∂k S can physically be interpreted in terms of v and derivatives of Re k S ċ σ, Re ω S τ in the direction of v, where σ1/2and τ1/2are beam-width and pulse duration, respectively.

TL;DR: A chestnut-sized malignant synovioma of the left knee of a 25-year-old-male has been investigated by light and electron microscopy and revealed an imitation of the microvillous surface structure of normal synoviocytes by the tumor cells which produced numerous “inner surfaces” resulting in pseudotubular clefts and spaces.
Abstract: Summary A chestnut-sized malignant synovioma of the left knee of a 25-year-old-male has been investigated by light and electron microscopy. Histologically, characteristic solid sarcomatous and pseudotubular structures are evident. Electron microscopy revealed an imitation of the microvillous surface structure of normal synoviocytes by the tumor cells which produced numerous “inner surfaces” resulting in pseudotubular clefts and spaces. The differential diagnosis of synoviomas and mesotheliomas is possible by the cytological and histological features of these tumors.

TL;DR: The data suggest that immune insulitis does not run a chronic progressive course but represent a temporary immunity phenomenon, and the occurrence of diabetes mellitus at an early phase of immunization may possibly be due to transient autoaggressive mechanisms to B cells at the climax of immuneinsulitis.
Abstract: Rabbits were immunized in different ways with bovine insulin in order to study the influence of duration and mode of immunization on the course of experimental immune insulitis and on the induction of diabetes mellitus. 2 groups (II, III) of 10 animals each received four insulin immunizations within four weeks either with predominantly Freund's adjuvant incomplete (FAI) or with exlusively Freund's adjuvant complete (FAC). 3 groups of 10 to 12 animals each were immunized with insulin for a period of 16 weeks. Within this time group IV received four immunizations with predominantly FAI, group V received seven immunization with predominantly FAC, and group VI sixteen immunizations with predominantly FAI.

TL;DR: The frequency of spinal and costal anomalies in infants with congenital esophageal atresia is demonstrated in 20 cases and these anomalies are easily recognized in radiographs they can provide additional hints in suspected esophagesatresia.
Abstract: The frequency of spinal and costal anomalies in infants with congenital esophageal atresia is demonstrated in 20 cases. Abnormal numbers of vertebral bodies in the thoracic and lumbar spine were found in 50% of the patients. The maximum number of thoraco-lumbar vertebrae was 19. Malformations of the vertebral bodies were frequent (35%). 13 pairs of ribs were found in 25% of the cases. Because these anomalies are easily recognized in radiographs they can provide additional hints in suspected esophageal atresia.

TL;DR: The relevancy of determining the impressive character of handwriting was proved by the work of three different independent investigators, each separately assessing the samples resulting from the same 300 handwriting tests, and the problem of different individual predispositions to the neuroleptic threshold is discussed.
Abstract: This paper discusses the present state of investigations concerning the concepts of ‘neuroleptic threshold’ and fine motor extrapyramidal inhibition. The publication also includes reports on studies carried out by thirty-one collaborators from the Haase work-team based on over 50,000 handwriting tests. The main results of the following studies are presented and discussed:Investigations effected by fourteen authors on 328 cases of schizophrenia proving the close relationship between crossing the neuroleptic threshold and onset of the anti-psychotic effect. By a gradual increase of dosage a neuroleptic-anti-psychotic action was obtained in the days following the crossing of the neuroleptic threshold for a total of 87% of cases, 52% of which took place in the first three days, another 16% within the following three days and the rest after a longer interval. In another series of investigations the actions of a neuroleptic drug above and under the neuroleptic threshold were systematically compared in twenty-fou...

TL;DR: It is assumed that the spleen dialysate is able to increase the gonadotropin effect on the ovaries through increased follicular atresia and disquamating granulosa.
Abstract: The stimulating effect of a spleen dialysate on the testicles and the accessory genital organs motivated the authors to test this dialysate on the ovaries. Also on the ovaries a different influence was observed. In comparison to the control animals, the enzyme pattern: lactate dehydrogenase, steroid-3-β-ol-dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, succinate dehydrogenase, and, glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase is significantly changed. The effect is manifested by an increase of the tertiary follicles, increased follicular atresia and disquamating granulosa. On the basis of these findings we assume that the spleen dialysate is able to increase the gonadotropin effect on the ovaries.
