TL;DR: To determine the portion of the B responsible for crossover enhancement, translocations between the B and A chromosomes were used to dissect the B into four distinct segments, and there was no localization of activity to a specific heterochromatic region, however.
Abstract: The B chromosome of maize is known to increase recombination in specific regions of the genome. In an attempt to determine the portion of the B responsible for crossover enhancement, translocations between the B and A chromosomes were used to dissect the B into four distinct segments. The effects of the segments on crossing over were studied in a sensitive region composed of chromatin from chromosomes 3 and 9. The relatively euchromatic chromomeres terminating the B lacked enhancement activity, but the remaining segments, all of which possess large amounts of heterochromatin, were capable of elevating recombination. There was no localization of activity to a specific heterochromatic region, however.

Abstract: For many years Ireland has been the main source of imports of older store cattle into Scotland and, even though the trade has declined somewhat in recent years, Irish cattle fattened in Scotland still account for about one-fifth of the clean fat cattle output from Scottish farms. Moreover, in recent years heifers and cows from Ireland have become the main source outwith Scotland for replacements for Scotland's rapidly expanding beef breeding herd. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the distribution of these Irish cattle to farms in Scotland, a task involving examination of such diverse factors as dealers, markets, types of farms and the yearly seasonal demands by Scots farmers for homebred and imported store cattle. Information has been derived from hitherto neglected sources, including a wealth of data obtained from Divisional Veterinary Officers, Area Livestock Officers and Agricultural Advisers throughout Scotland, and data already available in censuses, government reports and agricultural journals have been viewed in a new light.

TL;DR: The authors identified several Q-types (ideographic patterns derived from Q-factor analysis) that varied substantially with regard to choice time and thus offered suggestive evidence for a bias thesis and recommended that prevalent participant recruitment policy be changed so that experimenters can arrange appointments on a random basis.
Abstract: The predominant method of recruiting participants for behavioral research in university settings permits students to choose which experiments of many to participate in. When this method is used, the possibility of sampling bias arises because some students make their choices early and others late in the term. This study identified several Q-types (“ideographic” patterns derived from Q-factor analysis) that varied substantially with regard to choice time and thus offered suggestive evidence for a bias thesis. It was recommended that prevalent participant recruitment policy be changed so that experimenters can arrange appointments on a random basis.

TL;DR: Shannon and Weinstein this article pointed out the vigour of the Socialist Party's support in the North and East after it opposed American participation in the war, and argued that an American Socialism attuned to American conditions and needs had much potential vitality and could have been a significant political force in the country.
Abstract: Students of the Socialist Party of America are well-acquainted with the extensive and persistent support it received from poor farmers, many of them tenants, in Oklahoma and Texas. David Shannon and, more recently, James Weinstein have both noted that the Socialist Party of Oklahoma had a more active and widespread membership than any other state branch of the Party. Both writers have also given proper emphasis to the shattering impact of repression upon the widely scattered and vulnerable Socialist locals in the rural areas of the Southwest after the United States entered World War I. Weinstein especially has suggested that the Socialist Party was a broadly-based and effective political organization, not only ' in ' but ' of ' the world of American workers and small farmers. Pointing to the vigour of the Socialist Party's support in the North and East after it opposed American participation in the war, Weinstein argues that an American Socialism attuned to American conditions and needs had much potential vitality and could have been a significant political force in the country. For this assertion Weinstein was sharply criticized by a reviewer who argued that he exag gerated the depth of the Party's support after 1912 and that he specifically failed to perceive the German ethnic origin of much of the Party's ' new ' support for its anti-war position.1 If we look more closely at the Oklahoma evidence, however, Weinstein's thesis that a ' grass-roots ' party was the victim of political repression sanc tioned by national authority seems to be borne out. In Oklahoma the Socialist Party was almost wholly comprised of native, white Americans of Anglo Saxon ancestry and southern background. There were no foreign-language

TL;DR: A general theory of value can, and therefore ought, to go beyond these more specific domains as mentioned in this paper, and therefore should be extended beyond these specific domains to include a broader view of the nature of value.
Abstract: We can approach the nature of value from a number of starting points. Immersed in the realm of art, we may wonder what differentiates the beautiful from the ugly, the excellent from the mediocre. Our search might lead us to ultimate standards of value or canons of beauty. Engaged in social or cultural analysis, we can note the variegated and often shifting values in terms of which classes of people identify themselves or are identifiable to others. Reflecting on these can yield characteristic values. Looking at the dynamics of individual lives, we can ask after the values that motivate a person, his personal values. But perhaps most commonly in philosophical circles, it is ethics which forces us to take stock of the nature of value as we search for the nature of ethical values. Yet values, although presupposed by each of these areas of enquiry, are not restricted to any of them. A general theory of value can, and therefore ought, to go beyond these more specific domains.
