TL;DR: In this paper, a sample of 332 undergraduate psychology students completed the Career Decision Scale (CDS), the Career Factors Inventory (CFI), and the career decision profile (CDP), and four stable factors emerged, namely: Indecision, Need for Self/Career Information, Career Choice Anxiety, and Indecisiveness.
Abstract: A sample of 332 undergraduate psychology students completed the Career Decision Scale (CDS), the Career Factors Inventory (CFI), and the Career Decision Profile (CDP). Factor analyses were conducted and four stable factors emerged, namely: Indecision, Need for Self/Career Information, Career Choice Anxiety, and Indecisiveness. The CDP and the CFI both measured Need for Self/Career Information and Indecisiveness. The CDP overlapped in part with the CDS to form the Indecision factor, whereas certain CFI items formed the Career Choice Anxiety factor. The Career Decision Profile and the Career Factors Inventory appeared to be more multidimensional than the Career Decision Scale which was found to be unidimensional.

TL;DR: A study on self-care among whites, blacks and coloureds also focused on different forms of self-medication, including non-compliance, but selfmedication was not found to be a substitute for formal medical care.
Abstract: A study on self-care among whites, blacks and coloureds also focused on different forms of self-medication, including non-compliance. Large differences were found in the self-medication behaviour of the three groups. Different correlates of non-compliance were explored, but selfmedication was not found to be a substitute for formal medical care. S Afr Med J 1993; 83: 345-346

TL;DR: In this article, the authors apply the FSR/E approach to livestock production in Africa, and deal with the objectives of livestock owners, diagnosis of constraints and possible solutions to the livestock production problems.
Abstract: Applying the FSR/E approach to livestock production in Africa, this article deals with the objectives of livestock owners, diagnosis of constraints and possible solutions to livestock production problems. The objective set of farmers derives from the fact that cattle are wealth, as defined by neoclassical economic theory. Cattle provide financial security and are consumed indirectly (milk, lobola, draught) and directly (slaughter or sale). The primary technical impediment to livestock production is poor nutrition, deriving from a heavy stocking rate on unmanaged natural grazing. Secondary constraints are poor breeding practices and poor internal parasite control. Institutional interventions are required to improve the nutritional status of the herd. Other interventions should be aimed at increasing product output, decreasing external interference and increasing community control of the process.

TL;DR: In this paper it was shown that the lower radical of the Baer lower radical is not a special radical, and van Leeuwen and Heyman showed that the class of almost nilpotent rings (that is, of rings whose every proper homomorphic image is nil-potent) is not special.
Abstract: Throughout this note all rings considered are associative. The terminology and basic results of radical theory can be found in [1, 2]. A ring A is •prime essential if A is semiprime and every prime ideal of A has a nonzero intersection with each nonzero ideal of A (equivalently [3, Proposition 1], A is semiprime and no nonzero ideal of A is a prime ring). Prime essential rings were introduced by Rowen [7] and their important role in the study of special radicals was beautifully demonstrated by Gardner and Stewart in [3]. The present note shows yet another negative influence prime essential rings have on speciality of radicals. Namely, we prove that any radical (other than the Baer's lower radical B) whose semisimple class contains all prime essential rings is not special. As an application of the main result, we show that the lower radical Hi determined by the class of all almost nilpotent rings (that is, of rings whose every proper homomorphic image is nilpotent) is not a special radical. This gives a negative answer to a question, put in a private conversation, by Heyman. This also proves that £2 does not coincide with the Andrunakievic's antisimple radical By, and thus provides an answer to yet another question raised by van Leeuwen and Heyman in [6]. Finally, we use the main result to construct infinitely many supernilpotent nonspecial radicals. This leads to non-speciality of some supernilpotent radicals discussed in [4]. For future use we shall need the following construction of prime essential rings.

TL;DR: The language in which we are speaking is his before it is mine as discussed by the authors, and I cannot speak or write these words without unrest of spirit. But I have not made or accepted its words.
Abstract: The language in which we are speaking is his before it is mine. How different are the words home, Christ, ale, master, on his lips and on mine! I cannot speak or write these words without unrest of spirit. His language, so familiar and so foreign, will always be for me an acquired speech. I have not made or accepted its words. My voice holds them at bay. My soul frets in the shadow of his language. James Joyce, Portrait of the Artist

TL;DR: In this article, the class of semi-superprime rings is defined and shown to be a weakly special class which generates the superprime radical of Veldsman, and semi-uniformly strongly prime rings are defined.
Abstract: Strongly semiprime rings are characterized for rings not necessarily having an identity and the class of strongly semiprime rings is shown to be a weakly special class whose upper radical coincides with the upper radical generated by the class of strongly prime rings. The class of semi-superprime rings is defined and shown to be a weakly special class which generates the superprime radical of Veldsman. Semi-uniformly strongly prime rings are defined and shown to comprise a weakly special class.

TL;DR: In this article, the interactions between mixtures of zinc benzothiazole-2-thiolate (ZMBT), sulfur, stearic acid, and zinc stearate were studied by DSC in the absence and presence of polyisoprene (IR).
Abstract: The interactions between mixtures of zinc benzothiazole-2-thiolate (ZMBT), sulfur, stearic acid, and zinc stearate were studied by DSC in the absence and presence of polyisoprene (IR). It was established that ZMBT reacts with stearic acid to form zinc stearate and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT). In the presence of stearate compounds, MBT is readily available from the start of vulcanization, whereas it becomes only slowly available in the absence of these compounds. The effectiveness of the vulcanization process increases for the systems IR/ZMBT/sulfur < IR/ZMBT/sulfur/stearic acid < IR/ZMBT/sulfur/zinc stearate. In view of the above results, interaction mechanisms are proposed for the different systems. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors determined the hierarchical arrangement of the essential verb categories mood, tense, time and actuality, and established the mutual dependency and hierarchy of the verbs for an exhaustive discussion of the verb.
Abstract: The aim of this article is to determine the hierarchical arrangement of the essential verb categories mood, tense, time and actuality. The mutual dependency of these verbal categories is determined. The subcategories found in each of these major categories are investigated in order to establish their mutual exclusiveness. Apart from the realization of these categories in the main verb, their realization in the copulative verb is also determined. The copulative verb has a further essential category, namely implication which realizes as a binary opposition inchoative versus non-inchoative. It is imperative to establish the mutual dependency and hierarchy of the essential verb categories for an exhaustive discussion of the verb, an area which has hitherto been sadly neglected.

TL;DR: This article used Kuhn's and Stegmueller's arguments that Doke's model reflects the influences of traditional grammar and made a contribution to the historiography of African linguistics.
Abstract: This article is a response to Cole's article, ‘The history of African linguistics to 1945’. I use Kuhn's and Stegmueller's arguments that Doke's model reflects the influences of traditional grammar. This article is therefore a contribution to the historiography of African linguistics.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on the history of short stories by South African women of all races in an attempt to elucidate existing concepts pertaining to race, class and gender, and maintain that differences within ourselves have to be understood first before we can come to grips with differences inherent in others.
Abstract: Summary This essay focuses on the history of short stories by South African women of all races in an attempt to elucidate existing concepts pertaining to race, class and gender. It transpires that the first phase of modern feminist criticism was directed at exposing patriarchal tendencies prevalent in language and literature, while the second phase assessed the meaning and value of writing by women. The writer postulates that a perspective is imperative that both recognises and articulates intrinsic differentiation. Simultaneously, there should be an awareness of existing interrelationships allowing for different identities, divergent politics and dissimilar struggles. “Woman”, per se, cannot be regarded as a stable identity because of diversification related to politics, culture and customs. The writer maintains that differences within ourselves have to be understood first before we can come to grips with differences inherent in others. Differentiation of identity is discussed with reference to three ins...

TL;DR: The authors examined the racist discourse of pre-apartheid South Africa which produced Bessie Head's story of her origins and which continues to operate as a subtext to contemporary discourse.
Abstract: Summary The autobiographical material relating to Bessie Head's origins was not only adhered to by her in her life but is also inscribed in her fiction, notably in A Question of Power and Maru. The “truth” of her story of origins has been the subject of heated academic exchanges in South Africa, her country of origin. Head's story is examined as a paradoxical emancipatory strategy which both locks her into South Africa's most banal racist metaphor and also releases her to negotiate her empowerment. The paper examines the racist discourse of pre‐apartheid South Africa which produced Bessie Head's story of her origins and which continues to operate as a sub‐text to contemporary discourse. The two early novels, Maru and A Question of Power, are examined as re‐writings of Head's story, in which the conflict between racial identity and subjectivity is a central thematic concern. The novels are read as testimonies both to the power of ideology to affect the material and discursive subject and to Head's struggle...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify some of the problems which HIV/AIDS poses for an employment relationship and how law continues to deal with them against the background of what has already been written on the subject within the employment relationship.
Abstract: This article identifies some of the problems which HIV/AIDS poses for an employment relationship and how law continues to deal with them against the background of what has already been written on the subject within the employment relationship. The intention here, is to avoid as far as possible, re-writing what others have written on the issue and rather to expose what are basically divergent approaches to the HIV/AIDS bane in the workplace. Four countries, viz Botswana, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States of America are considered. Because HIV infection continues to invoke unwarranted phobia and undue bigotry, the initial focus is on the clinical aspects of the condition.
