TL;DR: Both bullies and victims manifested higher levels of depression than did students who were neither bullies nor victims, and there were no significant differences between groups in terms of self-esteem.
Abstract: This study investigated the prevalence of bullying and victimization among students in grades 7 and 8. It also explored the relationship of bullying and victimization to gender, grade level, ethnicity, self-esteem, and depression. Three survey instruments were used to obtain data from a convenience sample of 454 public school students. Twenty-four percent reported bullying involvement. Chi-square tests indicated significantly more male than female bullying involvement, seventh graders reported more involvement than did eighth graders, and there were no statistically significant differences in involvement based on ethnicity. Both bullies and victims manifested higher levels of depression than did students who were neither bullies nor victims. There were no significant differences between groups in terms of self-esteem.

TL;DR: Qualitative findings from interviews with 89 youth support a culturally embedded understanding of positive youth development that better accounts for young people's resilience in western and non-western countries.
Abstract: An international mixed methods study of resilience of 14 sites in eleven countries identified seven tensions that youth resolve in culturally specific ways Resolution of these tensions is foundational to experiences of resilience This paper reports on the qualitative findings from interviews with 89 youth Results support a culturally embedded understanding of positive youth development that better accounts for young people's resilience in western and non-western countries Specifically, the seven tensions identified include: access to material resources, relationships, identity, cohesion, power and control, social justice, and cultural adherence Findings show that no one pattern in the resolution of these tensions predicts resilience better than another A case study of a Palestinian boy demonstrates the intersection of the seven tensions and the uniqueness of their resolution The implications of this work for interventions is discussed

TL;DR: It was found that females were less satisfied with their bodies and were more likely to adopt strategies to lose weight, whereas males were morelikely to adopt Strategies to increase weight and muscle tone.
Abstract: This study investigated the nature of body image and body change strategies, as well as the sociocultural influences on these variables, among a group of 1,266 adolescents (622 males, 644 females). In particular, it investigated weight gain and increased muscle, as well as weight loss. It was found that females were less satisfied with their bodies and were more likely to adopt strategies to lose weight, whereas males were more likely to adopt strategies to increase weight and muscle tone. Respondents with higher body mass index (BMI) evidenced greater body dissatisfaction and more weight loss strategies, but there were no differences between BMI groups in weight gain or strategies to increase muscles. Weight gain and strategies to increase muscles were more likely to be undertaken by older adolescents, but there were no grade level differences in weight loss. Media influences to alter weight, as well as feedback from mother, father, and both male and female peers, were greater for females. There were few grade level or BMI differences in regard to any of the sociocultural influences. The importance of these findings in terms of providing a better understanding of factors which may lead to a disturbed body image and body change disorders, particularly among adolescent boys, is discussed.
