Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the development of flood insurance for buildings and building contents in the UK is examined in order to assess the extent to which it fits a crisis-oriented model whereby changes in the nature and effectiveness of the response are triggered directly (and exclusively) by individual hazard events.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The Blue Mountains Region near Sydney has experienced 25 fire seasons since 1875 in 11 of which damage occurred to urban property as discussed by the authors, on four occasions since 1951 a single fire run has destroyed more than 50 dwellings.

39 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a method for mapping of forest biomass using black-and-white aerial photographs and non-destructive field sampling is described through a case study of Ladhiya subcatchment in Kumaun Himalaya, India.

35 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Pacione et al. as discussed by the authors presented a methodology to evaluate the quality of the residential environment in a high-rise public housing development in Glasgow, which was based on a set of traditional indicators and a failure to consider views and preferences of residents.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Avalanches are a common occurrence throughout the Scottish Highlands and have been responsible for several injuries and deaths amongst climbers and ramblers as mentioned in this paper, with the majority being observed in the Cairngorms between the winters of 1977-1978 and 1979-1980.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The current level of emergency preparedness and planning for off-site releases of radioactivity from nuclear power plants in the United States and public reactions to it are reviewed in this article.

11 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the spatial characteristics of gullies in Auchi were analyzed through the use of rigorous analytical procedures, and a combination of anthropogenic factors and physical factors (such as soil material resistance factor) greatly improved the prediction of the dimensions and extent of gullying.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined spatial variations in Ilorin, Nigeria at the relatively neglected intra-urban scale and revealed very marked spatial disparities in social conditions in the city, the more indigenous areas being the most deprived.

10 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of a lower river stage on valleyside fluvial processes are examined in downstream reaches of the Tiga Dam in the Kano River basin, and it is argued that the construction of major dams on savanna streams on the valleyside slopes downstream, and that the maintenance of perennial flow in the relevant river channel would shorten the relaxation time required for a new equilibrium to occur.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a method for predicting avalanche activity from meteorological data which is suitable for Scottish snow conditions is presented. But the method is not suitable for the case of high or low temperatures.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a process of planning a housing aid policy for a distinct minority, the urbanizing Arab villagers of Israel, is delineated, revealing that the inclusion of primary grassroot values and sources of legitimacy in the process makes the policy acceptable to the minority, and reflects their perceptions of housing needs.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the effect of type, number and proximity of the visible surface sources of pollution on the extent and degree of pollution in the neighbouring water sources is investigated in Madurai.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors trace the energy transitions in Indonesia: from wood fuels to coal, spanning the period from the establishment of Dutch colonial rule to the 1950s; and from coal to oil and discuss the role of oil in the energy mix of Indonesia.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a purely geographical approach has been proposed to define priority transport subsidy allocation regions, which involves cluster analysis to generate several alternative allocation regions from which planners may select an appropriate policy.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Using time and a limited set of climatic data from the growing season, it is possible to model wheat yields and production using multiple linear regression techniques as discussed by the authors, which shows an encouraging predictive ability.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a detailed examination of the procedures by which publicly owned forest has been allocated in Tasmania, illustrates spatial, economic and other inefficiencies that have become embedded in the concession system.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a land classification for the county of Cumbria, in northern England, has been used as a sampling framework for ecological and land use studies, based on multivariate analysis of features on topographic and geology maps, allowed 1-km squares to be grouped into 16 environmental classes.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a network of small-scale growth centres has been chosen as the major spatial component in development planning for the uplands of Switzerland, where the relative growth of the larger urban settlements contrasts sharply with the backwardness of the rural periphery.

Journal ArticleDOI
C.R. Margules1
TL;DR: A survey of the vegetation of the North York Moors identified nine vegetation associations, one of which has not been recognized in other British uplands; callunetum vulgaris sub-association juncetosum squarrosi.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the short-term impact of road relocation within the rural area in relation to the following questions: what happens when a trunk road is opened through a hitherto isolated rural area? What happens when there is a permanent diversion of traffic on a transport route, especially with reference to human settlements, socioeconomic activities and community welfare?

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Seed traps consisting of plastic germination trays filled with steam pasteurized soil were set out on spoil banks in a limestone quarry to monitor the seed rain in the area as discussed by the authors.
