TL;DR: This paper examines literature review processes with the aim of contributing to a better understanding of their complexity and uncertainty and to propose a new approach to literature reviews: one capable of dealing with such complexityand uncertainty.
Abstract: Conducting a literature review is a vital part of any research. Library and information science (LIS) professionals often play a central role in supporting academics in their efforts to locate relevant publications and in teaching novice researchers skills associated with literature reviews. This paper examines literature review processes with the aim of contributing to a better understanding of their complexity and uncertainty and to propose a new approach to literature reviews: one capable of dealing with such complexity and uncertainty.

TL;DR: In this paper, five dimensions of the collective consciousness of information literacy researchers are proposed: 1) the sectoral location of the research; 2) ways of seeing information literacy; 3) what is being investigated, that is the research object; 4) research approaches and paradigms; 5) disciplinary influences.
Abstract: Information literacy researchers are beginning to develop a collective consciousness, a consciousness that represents the newly appearing territory of information literacy research. This paper analyses the information literacy research territory as it is represented by the emerging collective consciousness of information literacy researchers. Five dimensions of the collective consciousness are proposed: 1) the sectoral location of the research; 2) ways of seeing information literacy; 3) ‘what’ is being investigated, that is the research object; 4) ‘how’ the object is being investigated, that is the research approaches and paradigms; and 5) disciplinary influences. These dimensions are used to: 1) reveal the character of the information literacy research territory which is in early stages of construction; 2) show how different kinds of research approaches can shed different kinds of light on the object of research; and 3) demonstrate how the five dimensions work together in the development of new s...

Abstract: Greater emphasis on core or generic skills is generating sweeping reforms across tertiary curricula, and academics now face the challenge of developing in students complex concepts and skills of which they themselves may possess limited awareness, understanding or ability. This shift in focus demands that the academic must seek out comprehensive, specialised guidance from support areas such as libraries. In response, librarians must be positioned as key educators in the teaching and learning environments of the future. They require new and refined skills and conceptual understandings which will enable them to perform with an educational competence and professional confidence equal to that of their academic peers. The skills required to enable the ‘librarian-teacher’ metamorphosis to occur must be explored in terms of potential development and sustainability. Evolving roles and responsibilities, changing expectations and customised staff development present implications for librarians and library man...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the working partnership of librarians and academics in their efforts to develop students' information literacy at the University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand, and found that the effectiveness of information literacy programs depends on the teaching partners having a shared understanding of how information literacy is developed, and the provision of appropriate staffing resources to develop and deliver the programs.
Abstract: This study investigated the working partnerships of librarians and academics in their efforts to develop students' information literacy at the University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand. The study found that the effectiveness of information literacy programs depends on the teaching partners having a shared understanding of how information literacy is developed, and the provision of appropriate staffing resources to develop and deliver the programs. Effective communication and positive working relationships are some conditions that were found to be essential to the success of collaborative teaching partnerships, and strategies were identified for initiating, developing and sustaining those partnerships.

TL;DR: In this article, Wang et al. discuss the application of a sociocultural approach to information literacy research and curriculat design and present key theoretical principles arising from the research.
Abstract: Drawing on the example of a recent study (Wang, 2010), this paper discusses the application of a sociocultural approach to information literacy research and curriculat design. First, it describes the foundation of this research approach in sociocultural theories, in particular Vygotsky's sociocultural theory. Then it presents key theoretical principles arising from the research and describes how the sociocultural approach enabled the establishment of collaborative partnerships between information professionals and academic and teaching support staff in a community of practice for information literacy integration.
