TL;DR: Evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders, and how best to identify and treat these disorders and their symptoms is investigated.
Abstract: The effects of laryngotracheoesophageal cleft, rheumatoid arthritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, supracricoid partial laryngectomy with cricohyoidopexy, and postsurgical unilateral recurrent nerve paralysis on swallowing function are examined. Procedures for screening patients for symptoms of s

TL;DR: The time is now opportune for a multicenter, randomized, controlled trial to identify patients who would benefit from adjuvant radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy in the control of locoregional recurrences and the prevention of distant metastases.
Abstract: Purpose of review This purpose of this article is to review and provide an update of current publications on the evaluation and management of adenoid cystic carcinoma. Recent findings Adenoid cystic carcinoma is an uncommon salivary gland malignancy that presents insidiously and is generally advanced when diagnosed. Current effective treatment modalities include surgery and irradiation, but locoregional recurrences are frequent and may present as early as 2 years. Patients survive with recurrent and metastatic disease for several years despite not being offered any treatment. Molecular analysis of the tumors is being undertaken, with optimistic results capable of selecting high-risk patients who may benefit from adjuvant treatment such as chemotherapy Summary Little progress has been made in advancing "curative" treatment of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck. The disease is said to have a fatal outcome. The time is now opportune for a multicenter, randomized, controlled trial to identify patients who would benefit from adjuvant radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy in the control of locoregional recurrences and the prevention of distant metastases.

TL;DR: Clinical and basic research has furthered the understanding of benign vocal fold lesions and has expanded the diagnostic and therapeutic armamentarium for patients with dysphonia arising from these lesions.
Abstract: Purpose of reviewInnovative otolaryngologists, speech language pathologists, and voice scientists have continued to advance our understanding of the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of vocal fold nodules, polyps, and cysts. This article reviews the recent publications over the past 3 years with re

TL;DR: It is likely that both instrumental examinations will continue to be used and will be seen as complementary rather than competitors, and the use of the term gold standard as applied to fluoroscopy is no longer appropriate.
Abstract: Purpose of reviewAs flexible endoscopic examinations of swallowing become more widely used to evaluate patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia, it is important to be aware of research regarding the efficacy of this procedure as compared with the videofluoroscopy procedure. A recent evidence-based revi

TL;DR: The mechanisms of sensory hair cell degeneration in response to different ototoxic stimuli share a final common pathway: caspase activation, and inhibition of caspases prevents or delays hair cell death and may preserve hearing/balance function.
Abstract: Purpose of reviewSensory hair cells are mechanotransducers of the inner ear that are essential for hearing and balance. Hair cell death commonly occurs following acoustic trauma or exposure to ototoxins, such as the aminoglycoside antibiotics and the antineoplastic agent cisplatin. Loss of these inn
