Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of thermal processing on the chemical and physical properties of low density polyethylene are strongly dependent on the amount of oxygen present in the mixer, and it is concluded that hydroperoxides are the most important initiators during the early stages of photo-oxidation of normally processed polymers.

74 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, it was suggested that the peroxide decomposing and chain breaking antioxidants which are effective synergists during thermal oxidation of LDPE are antagonistic during photo-oxidation; it is suggested that this may be due to sensitisation of the photolytic destruction of the dithiocarbamates by oxidation products of the phenol.

63 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the influence of solvents on the auto-associated oligomers and on polymerization kinetics of acrylic acid and found that the auto acceleration is caused by a "matrix effect" of the poly(acrylic acid) formed in the early stages of the reaction.

60 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The kinetics of the free-radical copolymerisation of styrene and maleic anhydride at 60° in bulk and in several solvents have been studied in this paper.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, arylene-vinylene polymers with moderate d.c. conductivity ( ca. 1 μmho m −1 at room temperature) were used to measure the electric field relaxation.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the properties of dilute solutions of polyvinylpyrrolidone in various solvents are studied by measurements of viscosity and osmotic pressure.

48 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, six highly crosslinked polystyrene-supported phosphines have been prepared by suspension copolymerization, and used to convert alcohols in high yield to chloroalkanes, in carbon tetrachloride as co-reagent and solvent.

42 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the mechanism of photo-oxidation of both low density and high density polyethylenes has been studied kinetically, and the results are consistent with the view that when substantial quantities of carbonyl compounds are present in the polymers by photolysis of thermally formed hydroperoxides, they are intimately involved as initiators in the photooxidation by Norrish I photolyisation of ketones.

38 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the photochemistry and emission properties of a series of samples prepared under differing oxygen partial pressures suggest that these carbonyl groups originate from in-chain peroxides.

37 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the synthese et l'etude des proprietes physicochimiques en solution diluee de polystyrenes ramifies en etoile a 4 branches and en peigne are presented.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the photo-oxidative degradation of ABS, MBS and MABS were compared using i.r. and u.v. spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, colour measurement and falling weight impact tests.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The rubber damping peak of pure polybutadiene (PB) cannot be measured by a visco-elastomeric technique (Rheovibron).

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a priori, the oligomeres polyamides-11 ω,ω' dicarboxyliques par le butanol ou l'alcool benzylique have been prepared with des masses of molaires choisies.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated intramolecular excimer formation for three polystyrene model molecules (2,4-diphenylpentane, 2,4,6-triphenylheptane and 2, 4,6,8-tetraphenylnonane).

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that processes leading to the introduction of peroxide groups into polybutadiene also lead to photo-sensitization of modified polystyrene (HIPS).

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a new quantitative method is proposed for determination of labile chlorine in PVC, based on reaction of the labile atoms with phenol and analysis of the product by u.v. spectroscopy.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the relative viscosity of a rod-like macromolecule is derived for a model where the axial ratio is independent of the molecular weight of the model.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of alkyl(aryl)tin salts of maleic and thioglycolic acids and their esters upon the rate of dehydrochlorination and crosslinking, and on the absorption spectrum of PVC during degradation in vacuum at 190°.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: For the system hydroxypropyl cellulose/water, results from free diffusion and osmotic pressure measurements are reported over a very large concentration interval and at temperatures remote from as well as close to 0-conditions as mentioned in this paper.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical study on the flexibility of polyamidoacids and polyimides containing planar cycles connected by different types of joints was carried out, where the authors considered polyaminoacids as a sequence of linear links joined at some angles with free rotation about the links.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, it is proposed that the two components are formed at two distinct and independent active centres, and the presence of these groups at the active centre accounts for the influence of the Bu group on the stereospecificity of the polymerization.
