TL;DR: In this paper, an independent appraisal of an assistance programme mounted by international UN and voluntary agencies in response to an emergency influx of refugees is presented. But what happens after the cameras leave? What is the impact of the millions which are spent? What are the effect of the work of the humanitarians who are propelled into the field, and to whom are they accountable?
Abstract: This book represents an opportunity to see beyond the "starving child" image of the refugee. Every year relief budgets climb and humanitarian agencies proliferate in response to media appeals to save yet another population of starving, "helpless" refugees. But what happens after the cameras leave? What is the impact of the millions which are spent? What is the effect of the work of the humanitarians who are propelled into the field, and to whom are they accountable? "Imposing Aid" provides an independent appraisal of an assistance programme mounted by international UN and voluntary agencies in response to an emergency influx of refugees. The refugees in question were the Ugandans who spilled out over the Sudan border from the early months of 1982, but the findings have far reaching implications for policy throughout Africa and beyond. The data presented includes interviews with 6000 households, both in camps and with the greater number who struggled to survive outside the aid "umbrella". The findings of the research are all the more disturbiing as this particular assistance was considered to be one of the more successful.

Abstract: T JLhe talk today is of the "changing world economy." I wish to argue that the world economy is not "changing"; it has already changed?in its foundations and in its structure?and in all probability the change is irreversible. Within the last decade or so, three fundamental changes have occurred in the very fabric of the world economy: ?The primary-products economy has come "uncoupled" from the industrial economy. ?In the industrial economy itself, production has come "uncoupled" from employment. ?Capital movements rather than trade (in both goods and services) have become the driving force of the world economy. The two have not quite come uncoupled, but the link has become loose, and worse, unpredictable. These changes are permanent rather than cyclical. We may never understand what caused them?the causes of economic

Abstract: The authors examine popular religion as a vital source of new values and experiences as well as a source of pressure for change in the church, political life, and the social order as a whole and deal with the issues of poverty and the role of the poor within the church and political structures. Abstract: This study provides an assessment of how multinational companies have changed in recent years and how they have affected the economy and political structure of the United Kingdom. The authors raise questions as to why Britain, despite its economic problems, continues to attract international investors and why British multinationals are more broadly represented abroad than some competitors. They also examine arguments for and against Britain's heavy dependence on multinationals and analyze how the firms' responses to the new era of global competition have changed the balance of effect.
