TL;DR: The TV controller features modular design, which permits essential functions to be implemented on a priority basis while events of secondary importance are held until processing time is available.
Abstract: A microprocessor control that makes available sophisticated and desirable features not feasible with current standard or custom IC's is described. The TV controller features modular design, which permits essential functions to be implemented on a priority basis while events of secondary importance are held until processing time is available. Physical modularity also permits features to be added in the form of software changes, thus saving manufacturers the expense in time and money of hardware redesign.

TL;DR: The UK teletext system has been a full public service for almost four years, and the specification of the system has remained unaltered.
Abstract: The UK teletext system has been a full public service for almost four years, and the specification of the system has remained unaltered. It is expected that by the end of 1980 there will be more than 100 000 teletext receivers in use. There is no doubt that the system rests on a firm technical foundation and the deliberate attempt made to stretch technology at the time the specification was formulated means that the system is giving the highest possible information transfer rate consistent with ruggedness and freedom from errors.

TL;DR: In this article, the main lens of the electron gun has been narrowed to about half that of the wide neck delta system, and the astigmatic deflection field also deterio- rates resolution at the edge of the picture.
Abstract: At present a narrow neck (29 mm) in-line color picture tube in combination with a self-convergent deflection yoke is the most widely used TV-display system. This popularity comes from its easy convergence adjustment, low cost and power saving. However, the disadvantage of the system is its limited resolution, because the main lens of the electron gun has been narrowed to about half that of the wide neck delta system. The astigmatic deflection field also deterio- rates resolution at the edge of the picture.

TL;DR: Technical details of the technique to use picture coding technology to reduce the number of bits required so that the use of low bandwidth circuits is feasible are given.
Abstract: In March 1980 the British Post Office described research that has led to a facility for inserting high quality coloured pictures in viewdata pages. The technique is to use picture coding technology (originally devised for surveillanrce and teleconferencing) to reduce the number of bits required so that the use of low bandwidth circuits is feasible. This paper gives further technical details and describes some possible applications. A brief account of the current state of viewdata activities in the UK is included to explain why this development is regarded as important.

Abstract: The United Kingdom (UK) Teletext System has now been in service in the UK f or four years. It is also being transmitted on a regular basis in more than six European countries and Australia. Experience has confirmed the soundness of the original system design concept which has lead to television sets equipped with decoders from a number of sources. These combine economy, ease of use, and rugged system performance. The small added cost for installing the teletext decoder has been one of the most important factors in establishing the service in Britain.

TL;DR: In this article, the comb filtering techniques have been used in consumer TV through the recent advancements in charge coupled devices and in MOS integrated circuits to open new realms of picture resolution, freedom from interference between the luminance and chrominance signals and a new dimension of picture sharpness through the addition of vertical detail enhancement.
Abstract: Since the inception of color TV twenty-five years ago, there has been a continual improvement in the performance and features available in consumer television receivers. Advancements in circuit and device technologies have made their way from the research laboratories into consumer products as economics has permitted. So it is that now the circuit techniques of comb filtering, which have been known for decades, have become viable in consumer TV through the recent advancements in charge coupled devices and in MOS integrated circuits. These technologies can now be married with TV circuit designs to open new realms of picture resolution, freedom from interference between the luminance and chrominance signals and a new dimension of picture sharpness through the addition of vertical detail enhancement.

Abstract: The home VCR is the most complicated home electronic appliance and employs an extremely large number of electronic components. Therefore, with the home VCR, it is difficult to ensure high reliability and consistent performance. This difficulty, however, can be overcome in the most effective way by reducing the number of components employed in the VCR (especially that of active parts) through extensive use of ICs in its circuitry.

TL;DR: The graphics coding scheme used for videotex services should be capable of accommodating these variable terminal requirements and permit a maximum cf independence between the terminal, the communications medium used, and the data bases.
Abstract: The introduction of videotex services in several countries has spurred the search for the lowest cost user terminal which will provide acceptable performance. This has led to many arguments on the quality of graphics required. One faction argues that videotex is basically an alpha-numeric information service and only limited block graphics are required to enhance the text. The other faction argues that good graphics are an essential part of a videotex information service and are required to effectively communicate the information. Because of the wide range of information to be provided by videotex services it is likely that both faCtions are correct and in fact a wide range of terminals will be required. In the opinion of the authors of this paper, the graphics coding scheme used for videotex services should be capable of accommodating these variable terminal requirements and permit a maximum cf independence between the terminal, the communications medium used, and the data bases. In other words, a single data base should be capable of serving terminals with a variety of graphics qualities over a variety of communications mediums without any need for special processing for any particular terminal.

TL;DR: The PlayCable concept is a method of distributing personal computer software via a CATV system, and this data transmission scheme will be shown to be spectrally efficient, frequency agile and cost effective in providing a large variety of entertainment and information services to the consumer.
Abstract: Various technical alternatives for providing consumers with digital information services were explored during the late 1970's. Such systems as Teletext and ViewData specifically address the unique technical challenges associated with the broadcast and telephone communications media. Strong promotions by European governments have resulted in the establishment of defacto transmission and display standard for both of these systems. The situation in the United States is different in many respects, since government intervention is quite unlikely. Experimentation in the United States is currently underway to determine the optimum approach to delivering digitally based services to the consumer's home in an economical and appealing way. Currently, the cable industry in the United States is experimenting with a new service called PlayCable. This system addresses the new market segment of information services by offering advanced home video services eclipsing in graphics, sound and interactive capabilities previous services tested. The PlayCable concept is a method of distributing personal computer s6ftware via a CATV system. Technical details o1f the PlayCable CATV data transmission system are presented, highlighted by the headend computer system, which can become the basis for a host of future CATV services. Utilizing the wide bandwidth spectrum available on a CATV system, a time and frequency division multiplexing scheme is employed to transmit the services. This data transmission scheme will be shown to be spectrally efficient, frequency agile and cost effective in providing a large variety of entertainment, education and information services to the consumer. Four field trials using this sytem are currently in operation in the United States. Designed to not only test the technological and cost advantages of providing these services via cable, but also the field trials will test the marketing potential for digitally based software.

TL;DR: TV movies that respond to words spoken by viewers can simulate entertaining face-to-face conversations between each viewer and screen actors or cartoon characters in the movie.
Abstract: TV movies that respond to words spoken by viewers can simulate entertaining face-to-face conversations between each viewer and screen actors or cartoon characters in the movie. The actors and cartoons will reply responsively with lip-sync sound to words spoken by viewers. Different audio and video frames can be addressed on a videodisc to provide one of several alternative replies or alternative actions at each branch point in the movie, depending on what the viewer says to a speech-recognition unit. A simple speech-recognition unit can be used because the number of words to be recognized at each branch point is restricted to just a few words. Different words are used at different branch points to make the dialog realistic. To inform viewers of what words they can use at each branch point, a menu of prompting words is displayed on a hand-held unit. These prompting words are programmed to be phonetically distinct to be easily distinguishable from each other. A viewer speaks one of the displayed words and the speech-recognition unit decides which of the expected words was spoken. Viewers can input questions or make other remarks by speaking a displayed code word which stands for a whole sentence, or by pressing a button next to a sentence displayed on the hand-held unit.

TL;DR: The main body of this paper considers the method of the sampling clock regeneration of the Teletext receiver, which studied mainly the Japanese Teletext system which is now under consideration by the Radio Wave Technical Council.
Abstract: In recent years Television multiplex broadcasting systems have been put into practical use or have been under investigations in different parts of the world. The development of one kind of Teletext receiver with the means of generating a hard copy began in early 1969 at Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (MEI).(1) In mid 1971, we started to examine a kind of receiver which could receive both Teletext signals and the Data sent on telephone lines.(2) MEI developed the original system of Japanese Teletext under the guidance of the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK). We also developed the receiver and the test signal generator of UK Teletext in the middle of 1977.(3) The main body of this paper considers the method of the sampling clock regeneration of the Teletext receiver. We studied mainly the Japanese Teletext system which is now under consideration by the Radio Wave Technical Council, but most of the results can be applied to UK Teletext and others like it.

Abstract: The common problem of multipath reception manifests itself as "ghosts" in the resultant picture. Attempts to eliminate ghosts have included approaches involving special antennas, RF phase-delaying devices, or transversal equalizers that operate on the detected video waveform. This paper discusses experimental results that help to characterize the relative performance that can be obtained with transversal filters using various training waveforms and two popular adaptive control algorithms.

TL;DR: A description of the first federally funded test is a videotext style farm information retrieval system (FIRS), and is currently being tested in Kentucky, which is the subject of this dissertation.
Abstract: During this decade, low cost informatiom retrieval terminals (IRT's) will be available to consumers, professionals, and small businessmen. The mass marketing and distributiom of IRT's through retail outlets and the accompanying developement of an information service industry will make it possible for users to have access to vast information banks through existing communication facilities. Despite the obvious complexity of the regulatory enviornment in which the "information age is evolving, market acceptance, technological barriers, the energy crisis, a drive for increased productivity, and other socio-economic factors will encourage the development of information services and equipment. Teletext and videotext information services are already available in Great Britain, France, Germany, Canada and Japan. Many of these are in the test phase and are jointly sponsored by government and industry. In the U.S.A., the first federally funded test is a videotext style farm information retrieval system (FIRS), and is currently being tested in Kentucky. A description of this particular FIRS, Project Green Thumb, its implementation and its future significance is the subject of this dissertation.

Abstract: A microcomputer-controlled PLL bipolar IC including prescalers, has been developed. The ECL circuit contains a wideband band buffer amplifier and a high speed (1.2 GHz) prescaler. The I2L circuit contains all the PLL logic functions. A novel digitally-controlled frequency offset circuit using a 3 modulo prescaler and a rate multiplier, was designed in order to detune the local oscillator frequency from the center in the ±2MHz (±1 MHz) range with 31.25KHz(15.625KHz) steps. It makes this IC applicable to any nation's TV channel frequency. A new IC technology realizes both a high fT (4GHz) linear transistor and a high speed I2L gate (tpd=7n sec for a single collector) on the same chip.
