TL;DR: Bereavement or the sudden cessation of social interaction seems to be of special interest because it is often cited among the alleged psychogenic factors in psychosomatic disorders.
Abstract: At first glance, acute grief would not seem to be a medical or psychiatric disorder in the strict sense of the word but rather a normal reaction to a distressing situation. However, the understanding of reactions to traumatic experiences whether or not they represent clear-cut neuroses has become of ever-increasing importance to the psychiatrist. Bereavement or the sudden cessation of social interaction seems to be of special interest because it is often cited among the alleged psychogenic factors in psychosomatic disorders. The enormous increase in grief reactions due to war casualties, furthermore, demands an evaluation of their probable effect on the mental and physical health of our population. The points to be made in this paper are as follows: i. Acute grief is a definite syndrome with psychological and somatic symptomatology. 2. This syndrome may appear immediately after a crisis; it may be delayed; it may be exaggerated or apparently al)sent. 3. In place of the typical syndrome there may appear distorted pictures, each of which represents one special aspect of the grief syndrome. 4. By appropriate techniques these distorted pictures can be successfully transformed into a normal grief reaction with resolution. Our observations comprise tot patients. Included are (i) psychoneurotic patients who lost a relative during the course of treatment, (2) relatives of patients who uied in the hospital, (3) bereaved disaster victims (Cocoanut Grove Fire) and their close relatives, ( ) relatives of members of the armed forces.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the value of perceived support, relationship satisfaction, emotion-focused coping, problem focused coping, and mixed coping in predicting maternal grief in the year after a newborn death.
Abstract: Existing interventions to assist mothers following newborn death are implemented once manifestations of distress are present. Preventive measures could be instituted if predictors of grief were defined. The objective of this study was to investigate the value of perceived support, relationship satisfaction, emotion-focused coping, problem-focused coping, and mixed coping in predicting maternal grief in the year after a newborn death. The sample consisted of seventy-five bereaved mothers. Measures used included the Perinatal Grief Scale, Short Version; the Ways of Coping Scale, Revised; the Personal Resources Questionnaire 85, Part II; the Relationship Satisfaction Questionnaire; and the Demographic Data Sheet. Perceived support and emotion-focused coping accounted for a significant proportion of variance in total grief (43 percent), demonstrating that these two variables together can predict maternal grief. Programs to help bereaved mothers mobilize perceived support and use different ways of coping could...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the results of a recent study that support this, that indeed having ovarian cancer can instill a sense of alienation from life as a person has known it, and suggest that the term liminality needs to be amended to include the social surround of a liminal experience, as well as the generative potential inherent in such an experience.
Abstract: Liminality has been used in medical anthropology to conceptualize the cancer experience (Little, Jordens, & Paul, 1998). This article discusses the results of a recent study that support this, that indeed having ovarian cancer can instill a sense of alienation from life as a person has known it. However, it is also suggested here that the term needs to be amended to include the social surround of a liminal experience, as well as the generative potential inherent in such an experience. The study is qualitative in nature and explores the subjectivity of nine women living with stage-three ovarian cancer. The recurrent nature of the disease with its poor survival rate was found to instill a kind of sustained trauma that is accentuated by experiences of suffering in connection to loss. Finally, a pressing need to speak with and find recognition from other women who shared the same site of cancer was found.
