TL;DR: This study shows that drooling can be corrected by converting the anterior overflow into swallowing, and the posterior submucosal tube extension of the parotid duct considerably improved the results.
Abstract: Drooling is a serious disability in cerebral palsy. Analysis of 50 such cases treated surgically has been reported. This study shows that drooling can be corrected by converting the anterior overflow into swallowing, and the posterior submucosal tube extension of the parotid duct considerably improved the results. In children under 3 years of age, or with minimal drooling or as a salvage, excision of the submandibular glands promises satisfactory results. Myotomy of the mylohyoid is indicated whenever open mouth deformity is present in such cases.

TL;DR: Two hundred consecutive patients with congenital heart disease who attended the Kasturba General Hospital over a period of four years were studied, showing that 50% of the patients were in the paediatric age group and 27% were above 20 years of age.
Abstract: Two hundred consecutive patients with congenital heart disease who attended the Kasturba General Hospital over a period of four years were studied. The cases were studied by clinical, electro-cardiographic and radiological evaluation. In 20 cases, the diagnosis was confirmed at operation; in 7 cases at autopsy; and in 22 cases by special investigative procedures. There were 11 groups of G.H.D; of these 28% cases were cyanotic and 72% acyanotic. In this study V.S.D. headed the list. (29%) followed by V.S.D. with P.S. 17%, A.S.D. 12%, P.D.A. 11%, P.S. 7%. This study showed that 50% of the patients were in the paediatric age group and 27% were above 20 years of age. In the older age group, A.S.D. is the commonest lesion with V.S.D. following it.

TL;DR: If one more point was allotted to marasmus the accuracy of the Kenneth Jones criteria for diagnosing tuberculosis in children increased to 95%.
Abstract: One hundred cases of tuberculosis in children were evaluated by the Kenneth Jones criteria. A score of seven points required for diagnosing tuberculosis could be obtained in 73% of cases only. If one more point was allotted to marasmus the accuracy increased to 95%. This additional point is suggested for use in developing countries like India.

TL;DR: It was observed that the lower the social class, the higher was the incidence of nutritional disorders and that the maximum number of cases were seen in vegetarian families.
Abstract: 30.2 per cent of children examined had nutritional disorders and 80.3 per cent of these nutritional disorders were in the 6-months to 4-years age groups. Protein calorie malnutrition was found in 1.9 per cent of children. The common deficiency signs observed were pale conjunctiva (18.3 per cent), bleeding spongy gums (0.9 per cent) pigeon chest (0.9 per cent), Bitot’s spots (4.9 per cent); retarded growth and skin changes (1.9 per cent each). It was observed that the lower the social class, the higher was the incidence of nutritional disorders. The maximum number of cases (67.2 per cent) were seen in vegetarian families. 26.8 per cent cases had delayed milestones. Children of birth order III had the maximum incidence of nutritional disorders. 69.3 per cent of children were 15–30 pounds in weight and 64.3 per cent had a height of 18–30 inches. There was a highly positive correlation between height and weight of the children.

TL;DR: A majority of the cases of diphtheritic paralysis occurred between the age of 2 to 5 years and there were more children from the rural than from the urban areas.
Abstract: Eightysix children with neurological complications of diphtheria are reported. The disease accounted for nearly 20.9% of the treated cases in the S.C.B. Medical College Hospital, Cuttack. A majority of the cases of diphtheritic paralysis occurred between the age of 2 to 5 years and there were more children from the rural than from the urban areas. Palatal paralysis was a very common neurological complication which occurred alone or in association with other types of paralyses. The different neurological manifestations did not follow any definite order or pattern. The mortaiity was more in diaphragmatic and palatal paralysis. Those who recovered did not show any residual damage.

TL;DR: In this article, the common causes of hepatomegaly were found to be infective hepatitis cirrhosis of the liver and tuberculer granulomatous hepatitis, and liver biopsy was the most conclusive evidence of the cause.
Abstract: Thirty children with hepatomegaly of varying etiology were studied with a view to evaluate the degree of derangement of hepatic function. The common causes of hepatomegaly were found to be infective hepatitis cirrhosis of the liver and tuberculer granulomatous hepatitis. There was a graded pattern in the alterations of liver function tests in these three etiological groups, from the practical point of view it appears that a single determination of the albumin-globulin ratio and zinc sulphate turbidity would give adequate information. Liver biopsy was the most conclusive evidence of the cause. Any child who comes with an enlarged liver of more than 3 cm. in infancy and more than 2 cm. in childhood must be investigated fully to arrive at an etiological diagnosis.

TL;DR: Almost all of them presented with symptoms of irritability, restlessness, grinding of teeth and most of them had cephalgia, convulsions and a stuporous state simulating encephalitis or meningitis justifying the term “Ascaris encephalopathy” of toxic/allergic type.
Abstract: 25 cases having nervous system manifestations complicating ascariasis were encountered during a short period of 6 months. Almost all of them presented with symptoms of irritability, restlessness, grinding of teeth and most of them had cephalgia, convulsions and a stuporous state simulating encephalitis or meningitis justifying the term “Ascaris encephalopathy” of toxic/allergic type. The hypotheses of its pathogenesis have been discussed. The presenting symptoms and signs, relevant laboratory investigations, and treatment have been discussed.

TL;DR: One hundred and twenty cases of polyradiculoneuropathy (Landry-Guillain-Barré-Strohl syndrome between the ages of 1 and 17 years have been studied and forty patients were found to be suffering from ascariasis.
Abstract: One hundred and twenty cases of polyradiculoneuropathy (Landry-Guillain-Barre-Strohl syndrome between the ages of 1 and 17 years have been studied. The maximum number of cases (46 cases or 38.33 per cent) occurred in the age group of 3 to under 6 years. Males were more frequently affected than females., The pattern of involvement was predominantly ascending in nature. The distal group of muscles were observed to be more frequently affected than the proximal muscles. The protein content of the C.S.F. ranged between 60 and 620 mg. per cent in this series. Ninety two patients have recovered fully so far. Of them 80 patients recovered within one year. Forty patients were found to be suffering from ascariasis as well and a further probe on the possible role of ascariasis seems desirable.

TL;DR: It is possible, as illustrated by the experience reported in this paper, to identify a group of cases with a remarkably similar clinical syndrome and natural history, similar E.E.G. features, and morphological changes detected by electronmicroscopy.
Abstract: There is no clear chemical pathologic feature or unique enzymopathy to unequivocally characterize the cerebroretinal “degenerative” disorder designated by several titles including the eponym ‘Batten’s type of late infantile amaurotic idiocy’. It is however, possible, as illustrated by our experience reported in this paper, to identify a group of cases with a remarkably similar clinical syndrome and natural history, similar E.E.G. features, and morphological changes detected by electronmicroscopy.

TL;DR: In this article, an immediate evaluation involving the recording of time elapsing between birth and the onset of self sustained spontaneous breathing was compared with recording of respiratory rate and cyanosis at regular periods for several hours following birth.
Abstract: An immediate evaluation involving the recording of time elapsing between birth and the onset of self sustained spontaneous breathing was compared with the recording of respiratory rate and cyanosis at regular periods for several hours following birth. It was helpful in evaluating prognosis especially in neonates with increased respiratory morbidity and mortality, in the premature and in those born by caeserian section. Neonates of respiratory group III needed more attention, especially the premature ones, as they have a higher risk of morbidity and mortality (9.1%).
