TL;DR: It is recommended that institutions should attempt to use the knowledge transfer method perceived by the learner to be more beneficial to them as they establish the learning method that best suit them.
Abstract: Electronic learning (e-learning) is a term used to describe any form of education where knowledge sharing is primarily by means of electronic media and communication based technologies. This is one of the methods adopted by distance learning institutions. In Nigeria, many universities are now offering programs by distance learning where the learners in geographically dispersed locations and study at their own pace. The adoption of this form of education by higher institutions in Nigeria is on the increase. There are many tools, media and channels of communication available to these institutions of higher learning. The basic media include e-books, audio, video, computers, and mobile phones. Studies concluded that cultural background and learning styles may influence the effectiveness of the learning tools which could in turn lead to distortion of student learning. It is important that the most suitable of these channels as perceived by the learners themselves be understood. This would enable the institutions to understand the learning styles and expectations of the learners so as to provide the necessary support by focusing on the ones that encourage learning as perceived by the learner. The objective of this study is to understand the learner preferences of e-learning tools used by distance learning institutions in Nigeria. The study used as case study an open and distance learning university that employs e-learning technology as its major means of disseminating information. The study applied questionnaire to collect data from 245 students from two study centers of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). The study found a total of two hundred survey responses to be usable. The study analysis provided results of questions in three categories: Learner-instructor-interaction preferences; Learner-learner-interaction preferences; and Learner ability to learn independently. Results of the study indicated that the most preferred tool for knowledge sharing was significantly different for males and females ( at , which indicates that for the different sexes different approaches or education strategies for distance learning using technology might be better suited based on preferential bias. Results of the study may be useful as decision tools for evaluating and understanding the various teaching/learning tools and communication strategies so as to focus on the ones that encourage learning in our environment. The study recommended that institutions should attempt to use the knowledge transfer method perceived by the learner to be more beneficial to them as they establish the learning method that best suit them. TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conducted a study to ascertain the significance of indigenous banks to the economic development of Zimbabwe because any economy requires the existence of a banking system to ensure the mobilization of excess money, as well as guiding money towards the pursuit of efficient economic activities that promote economic development.
Abstract: The main objective of this study is to ascertain the significance of indigenous banks to the economic development of Zimbabwe because any economy requires the existence of a banking system to ensure the mobilization of excess money, as well as guiding money towards the pursuit of efficient economic activities that promote economic development. Banks as financial intermediaries channel funds from those who have excess money for investing at an interest to those who want to borrow at an interest, creating a lender borrower relationship. They also provide financial services that reduce the cost of moving funds between borrowers and lenders, leading to a more efficient allocation of resources and faster economic growth. Thus, banks are an essential component of modern economies, not only in terms of turnover, but also as primary financiers. 100 respondents were selected from 8 indigenous banks and 400 bank users were also selected using purposive sampling techniques. The data collected from the respondents was analyzed using mixed methods. Furthermore, secondary data was obtained from journals, reports and relevant publications. The findings of the study revealed that indigenous banks help entrepreneurs in different industrial sectors to gain access to capital which also contributes to the economic development of Zimbabwe. The study also revealed that indigenous banks inculcate the habit of banking in rural people and other low income groups among other benefits. Hence, there is need for the government to support indigenous banks. TL;DR: The result shows that, in order to minimize the risk of failure to adopt a KM system, a company needs to choose the system based on functional, non-functional and transitional requirements for the system, as well as organizational strength and capacities.
Abstract: “Knowledge is power”. Knowledge is an important asset for any organization. Many organization are now considering knowledge as an intellectual property. Thus the emergence of organizational knowledge management technologies are observed especially in the twenty-first century. Many companies are seen investing heavily in developing or purchasing knowledge management systems (KMS). Among all the systems of knowledge management, wiki is one of the most popular system, which is easy to use, cost effective and required low maintenance. Hence hundreds of companies are currently using wiki as the central repository system. Unfortunately several researchers have identified that the technology adoption is sometimes very risky as the failure rate is very high, which may often cause huge financial losses if it fails to address the problem. In response to those researches, this study is done to know how wiki system should be adopted by overcoming the risk of failure. In order to meet the purpose of this study two success stories of wiki adoption by NBC universal and Peacock production were analyzed. The result shows that, in order to minimize the risk of failure to adopt a KM system, a company needs to choose the system based on functional, non-functional and transitional requirements for the system, as well as organizational strength and capacities. A particular KM system should be chosen, only if the system can meet all the requirements of KM processes. The organizational structure and the system functionality should be matched before adopting the system. The result also suggests, if the users of the system are collaborative, have the will to share the valuable knowledge and motivated enough to use and apply the knowledge gained from the knowledge management system like wiki in day to day operations, the success rate of KMS adoption and implementation increases. Due to the limitation of time only two success case stories were evaluated and since this is not an empirical study additional care should be taken in generalizing the research findings. TL;DR: In this project, the Enhanced Knowledge Retrieval System (EKRS) was able to employ both web 2.0 and VSM to meet specific user’s information needs and achieve the aim of retrieving relevant documents.
Abstract: There is an increasing pool of information on the web and a major contributor is web 2.0 technology on which social media is based. Searching for specific information in this pool is always tasking, therefore, the need to harness this information as a means of enhancing retrieval and reuse of relevant ones. Some researches and development have been carried out in the field of Knowledge Retrieval using Vector Space Model (VSM) and Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI), but the approach used is based on large pool of information available online, which makes getting most relevant information relatively difficult at the point of retrieval, this is a major setback. Collaborations on Facebook and Twitter (web 2.0 technology) were harvested using APIs and stored in the Knowledge Repository, The collaboration on social media served as the source of information in the Knowledge Repository. An Enhanced Knowledge Retrieval System (EKRS) applying VSM was developed and implemented. The use of VSM was to calculate the Cosine Similarity and Term Frequency to aid effective retrieval of relevant documents from the repository based on user’s needs. In this project, we were able to achieve the aim of retrieving relevant documents. EKRS was able to employ both web 2.0 and VSM to meet specific user’s information needs. TL;DR: Investigating and studying of the current train timetable specifically for the newly operated AA-LRT timetable has a fundamental importance to design a new train timetable with better quality.
Abstract: One of the most decisive elements to have a good performance in a railway operation is the train timetable. With a good train timetable: the train can go faster, more frequently, more safely with efficient service to the passengers and with optimal use of the available resources. So that, investigating and studying of the current train timetable specifically for the newly operated AA-LRT timetable has a fundamental importance to design a new train timetable with better quality. The main parameters which have a big influence on the design of train timetable are the headway time, dwell time, trip time, speed, braking distance, synchronization of trains etc. So that, these parameters are discussed in detail and their values are calculated. To check the validation of these calculated values, simulating software called Arena is used. In the Arena software parameters like headway, dwell time, speed, synchronization time, the number of trains and safety block are used as inputs. When these parameters are simulated, it runs correctly and gives valid result including visualizing animation to show the real traffic movement. So that, from the output of the simulation a decision is made for each parameter to compare with the existing timetable and to give an attention to their effect on the design of the timetable. Finally, based on the calculated values and simulating results a better result for the main parameters of the timetable is found such as for the current speed a headway time of 7.5 minutes should be used and for the current available number of trains a speed of 30km/h with headway of 5.55 minutes are the optimal values. TL;DR: In this article, the authors reveal the understanding of corruption by Malang City people as the conscious understanding from expressions or statements, which is an important subject matter for evaluation and composition of anti-corruption programs based on effective communication.
Abstract: This research was aimed to reveal the understanding of corruption by Malang City people as the conscious understanding from expressions or statements. These diverse meanings become an important subject matter for evaluation and composition of anti-corruption programs based on effective communication. This research methodology was interpretive phenomenology. The results showed various meanings for term “corruption”. It meant as: 1) taking something or rights that belong to others, that one was not rightfully entitled; 2) behaviors that were encouraged by impulses of personal wishes or desires due to greed, conducted by actors that lack sincerity in what they do as well as good character; 3) taking away public rights for private interests; 4) obtaining personal gains by utilizing existing authority to detriment of others; 5) behaviors usually conducted by political elite; 6) same as theft or stealing but conducted by a perpetrator or the groups. These understandings of corruption among the people were understood through three fundamental questions in revealing the understanding of corruption by people. The fundamental questions involved how corruption occurs, what were the motives of corruption, and who were the corruption actors. Researchers concluded that understanding of corruption among the people was very diverse because it was determined by conscious understanding of each individual; the reveal of these meanings of corruption would make it easier to place them within educative measures for people by related instances, unifying equal meanings in an anti-corruption program based on effective communication referring to normative standards.
