TL;DR: Early diagnosis, identifying of underlying risk factors and timely intervention in the form of conservative or surgical treatment will help in reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with ectopic pregnancy.
Abstract: Background: Ectopic pregnancy is a common life-threatening condition. Diagnosis is frequently missed and should be considered in any woman in the reproductive age group presenting with abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding. Aims: To determine the incidence, clinical presentation, risk factors, treatment and morbidity and mortality associated with ectopic pregnancy. Material and Methods: Retrospective analysis of case histories of patients admitted with ectopic pregnancy at Government Lady Goshen Hospital, Mangalore was done. The following parameters: age, parity, gestational age, risk factors, clinical presentation, need for blood transfusion and findings on ultra-sonogram and at surgery and morbidity associated with ectopic pregnancy were noted. Results: A total of 31 cases of ectopic pregnancy were operated giving the incidence of ectopic pregnancy of 5.6/1000 deliveries. The commonest risk factors present were history of abortion (29 %), history of tubal surgery (9.6%), infertility (3.2%) and pelvic inflammatory diseases (3.2%).The commonest symptoms were abdominal pain (80.6%), amenorrhea (77.4%) and abnormal vaginal bleeding (61.3%); and commonest signs were abdominal tenderness (64.5%), cervical excitation (51.6%) and adnexal tenderness (48.4%). Surgery by open method in the form of salpingectomy (90.3%), salpingo-oophorectomy (6.5%) and salpingostomy (3.2%) were the mainstay of management. Morbidity included anemia (41.9%), blood transfusion (54.8%) and wound infection (32.2%). No maternal mortality noted. Conclusion: Early diagnosis, identifying of underlying risk factors and timely intervention in the form of conservative or surgical treatment will help in reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with ectopic pregnancy.

TL;DR: The internet addiction problem among students should gain attention and it is time to evolve an comprehensive intervention appraoach to promote a healthy and safe Internet use.
Abstract: Introduction : The excessive and inappropriate use of Internet is a growing concern in the current tech-savy World. The youth are particularly vulnerable to this problem which may ruin their very critical academic career. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of Internet Addiction pattern and to analyse the associated factors among the college students from various education field. Methodology : This is a cross sectional study, in which 596 college students studying in Arts,Engineering and Medicine were assessed using a self-administered questionairre. Information regarding demographic factors was collected and Internet Addiction pattern determined by Young’s Internet Addiction test scale. Results : The findings show that out of 596 students, 246(41.3%) were mild addicts, 91(15.2%) were moderate addicts and 259(43.5%) were not addicted to internet use. There is no pattern of severe internet addiction among the study group.Males, students of Arts and Engineering stream, those staying at home, no extracurricular activity involvement, time spent on internet per day, mode of accessing internet are some of the factors significantly associated with internet addiction pattern. Conclusion : The prevalence of Internet Addiction is high, were in more than half of the study group show some form of Internet Addiction pattern. The internet addiction problem among students should gain attention and it is time to evolve an comprehensive intervention appraoach to promote a healthy and safe Internet use.

TL;DR: Significant changes were observed in sperm count, and motility, which signify the testicular dysfunctions and leading to inhibit testosterone synthesis pathway, finally causes male infertility.
Abstract: Arsenic is found in biological systems as inorganic oxy forms (oxides, arsenites and arsenates) and as organic arsenic compounds. Arsenic found in soil and drinking water comes from geophysical as well as anthropogenic sources. The most common route of exposure for the general public is food and drinking water. Public health concerns have centered on carcinogenic, cardiovascular and nervous system effects seen in populations exposed to arsenic in drinking water. In geographical areas that do not have high levels of As contamination in drinking water, dietary intake is the major exposure route. Thus, consumption of contaminated foods or their processed products are often major contributors to As exposure and subsequent human-health effects. To evaluate possible toxicity on the male reproductive system during arsenic therapy, male mice were used as a model. In the present investigation, the dose of 3 mg/Kg b.w & 4 mg/Kg b.w of Arsenic trioxide (As2O3) was continuously administered to male mice for 8 weeks. The mice were sacrificed on 2nd , 4th ,6th , & 8th week to observe the sperm quality(sperm count & sperm motility) and level of Testosterone and Leutinizing hormone (LH) in the serum. After treatment, major changes were observed in androgenic activity of male mice with reduced accumulation of spermatozoa and imbalance hormonal level. Significant changes were observed in sperm count, and motility (p<0.001) and declination in the level of Testosterone and inclination in the level of LH were observed which signify the testicular dysfunctions and leading to inhibit testosterone synthesis pathway, finally causes male infertility.

TL;DR: The presence and level of bacterial contamination in an operation theatres that contributes to the major outbreak of nosocomial infections of District Hospital Budgam of Kashmir Division is described.
Abstract: This paper describes the presence and level of bacterial contamination in an operation theatres that contributes to the major outbreak of nosocomial infections of District Hospital Budgam of Kashmir Division. Samples were collected by open plate method and swab method for air, surface and articles, and were further isolated and identified. The bacterial pathogens comprising of Staphylococcus spp., Bacillus spp., and Coagulase negative Staphyloccoci spp. High bacterial contamination was observed in air samples in which 80% contamination was caused by Bacillus spp.

TL;DR: The patients of clinically diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus were divided into 2 groups, based on the presence or absence of at least 2 out of 3 microangiopathic complications, namely, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy and peripheral neuropathy, and subjected to tests for estimation of Zinc, Magnesium and Copper concentration in serum.
Abstract: A number of studies have shown that patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus are more prone to develop microangiopathic complications. The patients of clinically diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus were divided into 2 groups, based on the presence or absence of at least 2 out of 3 microangiopathic complications, namely, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy and peripheral neuropathy. Then the patient in each group (n=50) were subjected to tests for estimation of Zinc, Magnesium and Copper concentration in serum. Hypozincaemia was seen in all diabetic subjects, but the decrease in levels was more in the group with microangiopathic complications (81.16 + 24.34 vs. 92.01 + 20.17; p<0.05). Hypomagnesaemia was also more significant in the group of patients with microangiopathic complications (1.64 + 0.67 vs. 2.09 + 0.56; p<0.001). Hypercupremia was seen in all the patients, but the increase in levels was more significant in the group with microangiopathic complications (140.64 + 33.61 vs. 116.77 + 26.22; p<0.001). Hypozincaemia and hypomagnesaemia in type 2 diabetes is said to be due to hyperglycaemia that promotes increased excretion of these trace elements in urine. The glycated proteins seen in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients have an increased affinity for copper, leading to hypercupremia. This bound copper is redox active and leads to production of free radicals that cause oxidative stress which, plays some role in the development and progression of microangiopathic complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
