Abstract: Summary This paper begins by examining briefly the nature of award bearing INSET before GRIST, and identifies coherence and progression in professional development as important dimensions of course processes designed to foster enhanced competence and reflective practice. The maintenance of progression and coherence in modular schemes is discussed, and the Independent Study approach compared. Questions are raised about transfer of credit or transfer of learning in modular schemes. The Professional Development Portfolio allows the teacher to make explicit the reflective practice and enhanced professionalism derived from a wide variety of situations. This broadens discussion about the nature of extended professionalism, and facilitates more individualised and negotiated routes to awards.
