TL;DR: In this article, a prospective model syllabus for graduate-level social work courses exploring the interactions between social work and race is presented, both historical and present, both productive and problematic.
Abstract: This article provides a prospective model syllabus for graduate-level social work courses exploring the interactions between social work and race—both historical and present, both productive and problematic—and makes an argument for this subject matter’s relevance for a course to be implemented in the graduate-level curriculum of social work programs. Instructors can view this syllabus as a template they can customize for their own purposes and contexts, and thus it should not be viewed as fixed, comprehensive, or definitive. Due to the evolutionary nature of research, language, and terms, the syllabus, of course, will need constant revision; but it is conceived as offering a curation of resources, thereby providing a starting point for education on this important topic, at least for this moment in time.

Abstract: A social justice classroom agenda relies on the ability of educators to create a space free from microaggressions that can be strengthened through an approach of cultural humility. Utilizing Bonnycastle’s social justice continuum, this article explores how to create a classroom grounded in social equality and guided by social work values to foster participation from students across all social identities.

TL;DR: The inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer perspectives and experiences in the social work classroom is necessary to adequately include LGBTQ students and prepare graduates to practice effectively.
Abstract: The inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) perspectives and experiences in the social work classroom is necessary to adequately include LGBTQ students and prepare graduates to practice effectively. Drawing from queer theory as a theoretical framework and the authors’ experiences in practice and teaching/learning spaces with LGBTQ youth, this article offers practical strategies for creating classrooms inclusive of LGBTQ persons. Queering the classroom builds skills in students beyond practice with LGBTQ people and communities, thereby enhancing their capacity to engage diversity in practice more generally and to advance human rights and social justice.

TL;DR: The authors conceptualized field coordination as a negotiated pedagogy in which the coordinators navigate complex and often competing needs among students, field agencies, and social work practice, and suggested that field coordination is a critical relational pedagology essential to advancing social work education.
Abstract: Although field education is considered the signature pedagogy of social work, the work of field coordinators appear to remain peripheral to other aspects of social work education, such as coursework and research. In this article, we suggest that field coordination requires a far more complex set of knowledge and skills than merely matching students with placements based on availability and interest. Using critical and relational theories, this article conceptualizes field coordination as a negotiated pedagogy in which the coordinators navigate complex and often competing needs among students, field agencies, and social work practice. In making visible its nuances and intricacies, we suggest that field coordination is a critical relational pedagogy essential to advancing social work education.

TL;DR: This paper examined the challenges faced by social work field instructors in two Canadian provinces and found that student difficulties, administrative issues with the social work schools, and practicum setting challenges hinder the optimal implementation of social health field education, reveal the concerning gatekeeping role of schools of social work, and discourage some social workers from taking on (or continuing) as field instructors.
Abstract: This article examines the challenges faced by social work field instructors in two Canadian provinces. The results are based on the responses from 239 field instructors to a questionnaire survey. Findings highlight student difficulties, administrative issues with the social work schools, and practicum setting challenges. These demands hinder the optimal implementation of social work field education, reveal the concerning gatekeeping role of schools of social work, and discourage some social workers from taking on (or continuing) as field instructors. Implications for social work student placements, supervision of students, academic programs, and directions for future research are presented.

TL;DR: The authors found that the typical entering PhD student displayed solid conceptual, ethics, and writing skills but lesser preparation for conducting quantitative and qualitative research, including methods related to understanding evidence-based practice, and the research expectations of responding PhD faculty were low, reflecting limited retention and little production of research among typical entering doctoral students.
Abstract: This national survey of PhD faculty assessed the research preparation of entering doctoral social work students on a wide range of research knowledge and related skills. The prior literature shows that PhD programs repeat much BSW and MSW research course content. This study shows that the trend continues and has perhaps widened. PhD research faculty report that the typical entering PhD student displayed solid conceptual, ethics, and writing skills but lesser preparation for conducting quantitative and qualitative research, including methods related to understanding evidence-based practice. The research expectations of responding PhD faculty were low, reflecting limited retention and little production of research among typical entering doctoral students. These findings raise the issue of how effectively the social work profession prepares students for research and for future PhD education.

TL;DR: In this paper, an approach to curriculum building taking into account the integration, coherency, and integrity of such a curriculum is described, and the alignment of the components of a course reveals integrity in the curriculum is portrayed.
Abstract: The focus on competency in social work education makes the development of a competency-based curriculum critical. This article describes an approach to curriculum building taking into account the integration, coherency, and integrity of such a curriculum. A presentation of how performance outcomes are fundamental to the relationship between the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standard competencies and the assignments designed to assess their attainment is presented. A demonstration of how the alignment of the components of a course reveals integrity in the curriculum is portrayed. How these aspects coalesce to build a competency-based curriculum is illustrated, and how this curriculum fulfills accreditation requirements is presented. The article concludes with the benefits and a cautionary note on this approach to curriculum building in social work education.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe an innovative two-semester course offered in Spanish that prepared advanced undergraduate and graduate students to use a cognitive behavioral therapy intervention (Vida Alegre).
Abstract: Bilingual social workers need specialized training to provide effective mental health services to Spanish-speaking Latinos. Ideally, this training should use the language in which the social workers plan to practice. This article describes an innovative two-semester course offered in Spanish that prepared advanced undergraduate and graduate students to use a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention (Vida Alegre). In the first semester, students learned CBT methods using Vida Alegre training materials. In the second, they conducted a service-learning project that included facilitating a CBT group under the supervision of an instructor. We review their challenges and lessons learned and provide future recommendations.

TL;DR: The American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare (AASW & Social Welfare) recognizes the need to "prepare bilingual, bicultural social workers to lead our profession on how to best serve Latinx communities" as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Achieving Equal Opportunity and Justice for All, including Latinx communities, is one of the Grand Challenges of the American Academy of Social Work & Social Welfare. This is an opportunity that Social Work is well equipped to lead from its assets-based approach to research and practice. Such a systemic transformation can be attained through innovative programs that prepare bilingual, bicultural social workers to lead our profession on how to best serve Latinx communities. This article lays out this Latinx opportunity and introduces initiatives across the country to advance the formation of social workers equipped to work effectively with the growing Latinx population in America.
