TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that digital corporations and social media platforms are shaping the changing value and experience of live music, introducing new patterns of commodification, as digital technologies are incorporated into a live experience economy, and live experience integrated into a digital attention economy.
Abstract: This article contributes to histories of live music since digitalization and provides a corrective to the neglect of liveness in scholarship on streaming and platformization. The study argues that digital corporations and social media platforms are shaping the changing value and experience of live music, introducing new patterns of commodification, as digital technologies are incorporated into a live “experience economy,” and live experience integrated into a digital “attention economy.” The article illustrates how platforms are exerting greater influence within the music industries as streaming extends live music from an activity associated with real place to an experience in real time.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore how the proliferation of affordable digital tools and the availability of specialist knowledge have affected the mixing stage of metal music productions, asking whether a standard methodology is apparent in producers' use of templates and presets, processing of audio, and choice of tools.
Abstract: ABSTRACT This article explores how the proliferation of affordable digital tools and the availability of specialist knowledge have affected the mixing stage of metal music productions, asking whether a standard methodology is apparent in producers’ use of templates and presets, processing of audio, and choice of tools. Analyzing fifty professional metal mixes on the platform Nail The Mix, the findings suggest that although producers follow a vaguely defined standard methodology for technical reasons, they have leeway for individuality and creativity. Producers freely give insight into their mixing approaches, which likely inspires exploration of new approaches in the metal producer community.

TL;DR: In this paper, a sociocultural and musicological perspective on the question of how and whereby adolescents negotiate their musical preferences and rejections is provided. But the authors focus on how their approaches are guided by different patterns of orientation and emphasize the necessity of fostering a differentiating view on audiences' reception of popular music, in connection with meaning-production dynamics, sonic esthetics, and processes of labeling and canonization.
Abstract: ABSTRACT This article provides a sociocultural and musicological perspective on the question of how and whereby adolescents in Vienna negotiate their musical preferences and rejections. At the core of the article is the analysis of group discussions which were conducted with 16- to 18-year-old students. The study illustrates the complexity of popular music’s integration in young people’s frameworks of knowledge and discusses how their approaches are guided by different patterns of orientation. It embarks on the necessity of fostering a differentiating view on audiences’ reception of popular music, in connection with meaning-production dynamics, sonic esthetics, and processes of labeling and canonization.

TL;DR: In this article, the position of music in UK General Elections is considered, and the fragmentation of this electoral and musical landscape through the technological and communicative affordances of digital media.
Abstract: ABSTRACT This article considers the position of music in UK General Elections. It begins by looking at mainstream Party Election Broadcasts, and then discusses the fragmentation of this electoral and musical landscape through the technological and communicative affordances of digital media. Considering campaigners as “produsers”, it examines how musical campaign content illustrates the shifting outputs of those operating within, and outside of, party political structures. These changes relate to broader questions of the extent, or limits, of digitalization’s potential for democratizing political communication. Considering the musical aesthetics of election campaigns is a step toward examining the decision-making processes that underpins them.
