Abstract: This article uses the cartoons published in O Malho magazine between 1902 and 1910 to assess the perception of cartoonists and/or publishers of this periodical on the political republican processes–the electoral practice, the political class and its institutions–and how such interpretation was published. The publications reveal the electoral dynamic and the results of the elections, traditionally criticized as exclusive, predictable and fraudulent. Such facts became object of recent researches, and have been showing that the elections were more competitive than they seemed to be. We attempted to relate the political view of O Malho magazine to the present historiographic works approaching and revisiting the interpretation of the elections.

Abstract: The centenary of the University Reform (RU) of 1918 leads historians to try to answer the question of validity or the decline of the reformist ideas that so influenced the Argentine university. For this, the purpose of this article is to reflect on the connection between this nucleus of ideas, the university and politics in the different historical junctures, with the aim of remembering the project of university renewal, the reconfiguration of that matrix and the emergence of some intellectuals who assumed interesting contributions of political intervention during the twentieth century, in particular, until the democratic transition of the eighties. The writing aims to convey the concern of the social sciences in general, history in particular, in making contributions to the transformation of the link between university, society and politics at the current time.

La investigacion se realizo a partir del analisis de los textos publicados por Coutts, quien fue un protagonista de importancia en los inicios de la educacion sexual estatal, en la lucha contra las enfermedades venereas, el debate del proyecto eugenico y en la politica, por lo que es una figura relevante de la primera mitad del siglo XX chileno que, a traves del resultado de esta investigacion, resulta relevada y destacada como un ejemplo de pensamiento medico y politico en el que confluyen ideas biologicas y politicas. EnglishThe objective of this paper is to analyze the figure of Waldemar Coutts in the context of Chilean public health and eugenic thought, in the 1920s and 1930s. The research was carried out based on the analysis of the texts published by Coutts in this period, important protagonist in the beginnings of state sex education, the fight against venereal diseases, the eugenic project debate and in politics: which is why he is a relevant figure of the first half of the 20th century in Chile. Through the result of this research, it is revealed and highlighted as an example of medical and political thought, in which biological and political ideas converge.

Abstract: Resumo O objetivo deste artigo e refletir como a historia natural foi mobilizada para combater as doutrinas materialistas ilustradas em Portugal na segunda metade do seculo XVIII. Propoe-se analisar o pensamento de tres importantes homens de ciencia portugueses que se valeram da teologia natural para defender, por diferentes meios, a validade da doutrina catolica: o padre oratoriano Teodoro de Almeida e os frades franciscanos Manuel do Cenaculo e Jose Mayne. Argumentaremos que, naquele contexto da Ilustracao, tais intelectuais enxergaram a necessidade de se opor publicamente as “novas filosofias do seculo”, sempre buscando fundamentar a legitimidade da doutrina catolica por sua racionalidade.

Abstract: This article analyzes the performance of the Brazilian executives of heavy construction together with the press organizations before and during the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship. Through the access to memories and primary sources of the sector, we verified the high interest of these agents in the newspapers of great circulation in the country and the power of its leaders, given the control these had on vehicles of great regional and national circulation. We noticed a change in the performance of construction entrepreneurs with the press before and during the dictatorship, with an intensification of the actions of these agents along with newspapers written in the very escalation of the economic and political emergence of contractors after the 1964 coup.

Abstract: The GPL-PE was the first association that formalized the ties of belonging of the Portuguese community. From GPL-PE other Portuguese institutions were formed. It was around this Room that for the first time discussions emerged about the identity of the Portuguese immigrant. This article aims to understand how the discourses on the identity of the Portuguese immigrant in Pernambuco was reconstructed and which were the paths taken by this community to (re)signify the image of colonizer-explorer to immigrant-constructor of the new Brazilian nation. In line with this approach, the constantly changing views produced by the Portuguese in the process of (re) construction of the discourses that (re) signified their identity in Pernambuco, between the years of 1850 and 1921, were analyzed.

Abstract: Resumo Este artigo e produto da analise de uma polemica entre os historiadores Giovanni Levi e Robert Darnton. Tres questoes, entre outras, foram tratadas: a primeira se refere a indicacao de que Darnton teria feito a transposicao mecânica da antropologia interpretativa para o campo da historia cultural; a segunda diz respeito a problematica do relativismo em razao da interpretacao sempre continuada por Darnton; a terceira segue as pistas de influencias hermeneuticas em Geertz e em Darnton demonstradas por Levi. Por fim, tenciona-se avaliar as implicacoes teoricas dos textos escritos por Levi sobre O grande massacre de gatos de Darnton.

Abstract: Resumo O objetivo deste artigo e compreender os processos de construcao de conhecimento sobre a natureza do Brasil, no seculo XVIII, a partir do estudo de caso de Francisco Antonio de Sampaio e seu trabalho de filosofia natural. Busco compreender tais processos como sendo resultantes de dinâmicas de circulacao de conhecimento, trocas e negociacoes, e o estabelecimento de relacoes de poder entre os agentes envolvidos neste processo. Pretendo demonstrar como estas dimensoes foram fundamentais para o processo de producao de trabalhos cientificos nos espacos coloniais, bem como para sua circulacao e a validacao pelos circulos letrados metropolitanos.

Abstract: Resumo Este artigo analisa os discursos sobre a demanda prisional ao longo do seculo XIX nos registros oficiais da Câmara Municipal de Sao Paulo, nos relatorios das comissoes de inspecao e nos periodicos dos estudantes da Faculdade de Direito do Largo do Sao Francisco. A contradicao entre a idealizada prisao moderna e a sua realidade na capital paulista - considerada uma instituicao decadente por nao cumprir com o seu papel manifesto - expressa o mesmo descompasso/paradoxo entre o pensamento politico moderno e a realidade escravocrata brasileira. Mesmo em teoria, a prisao “regeneradora” so poderia ser sugerida em uma sociedade juridicamente livre; por outro lado, a prisao paulistana denunciada como atroz e desumana era a instituicao socialmente legitima e necessaria em uma sociedade escravocrata.

Las fuentes son publicaciones del acervo de la Biblioteca de Estudios Hispano-Americanos y de la Biblioteca del Archivo General de Indias en Sevilla, de igual forma, de la Biblioteca del Archivo Publico del Estado del Mato Grosso (Brasil). Las resultantes quedan en una vision historica mucho mas puntualizada desde una perspectiva historico-antropologica acerca de la etnia nativa conforme las conclusiones. EnglishThe objectives are focused on: developing cultural awareness based on the history of the natives, knowing aspects of native life in the given century, understanding the importance of the Mbaya-Guaycurues in the context of the historical line. The sources are publications of the collection of the Library of Hispanic-American Studies and of the Library of the General Archive of the Indies in Seville, likewise, of the Library of the Public Archive of the State of Mato Grosso (Brazil). The results remain in a historical vision much more specific from a historical-anthropological perspective about the native ethnic group according to the conclusions.

Abstract: In the present article, a panoramic vision of the social and historical studies that make a relation between politics and sports is proposed; three major groups are identified, theorists, political frameworks and political sports such as network theory or the concept of instrumental friendship, which can help illuminate the phenomena explored prematurely. The vision of all this is that we are still analyzing the sport in a very static way and that it is based on the traditional conceptions of "the political", and that even more it problematizes that concept, more questions about the investigations that do it in it; that is why we choose to see the "political" as a process and not as something given, and from that point, history becomes fundamental.

La historia del paisaje nos la relatan los autores de las autobiografias campesinas que vivieron en ese territorio, algunos costarricenses otros nicaraguenses. El paisaje historico es interpretado como una totalidad, uniendo variables fisicas, asi como sociales y culturales. Cuatro son los aspectos analizados: la integracion de la tierra y la poblacion alrededor del recurso acuatico, la colonizacion agricola, las redes sociales y la migracion nacional y nicaraguense y la poblacion fronteriza norte e identidad territorial. EnglishThis article aims the diverse landscape of Upala in the first half of the century, which was developed by the settlers of that place. For that reason, this research incorporates pieces of the autobiographies of the farmers, both Costa Ricans and Nicaraguans, who describe the history of the space environment. Furthermore, factors, such as the physical geography, social environment and cultural background, are characteristics considered to study the historical landscape as a whole. Moreover, the reader can appreciate a detailed analysis of four aspects: 1) the settlements and the use of natural resources; 2) Upala’s first agriculture production; 3) the migration and social relations patterns of Costa Ricans and Nicaraguans and; 4) the regional identity of this population.

Esta derrota francesa resulto clave para el desenlace de la guerra de Indochina, que concluyo con la firma de los Acuerdos de Ginebra el 21 de Julio de 1954. El tratamiento del combate y de sus consecuencias por los periodicos espanoles, directa o indirectamente controlados por las autoridades franquistas, resulto totalmente dependiente de su anticomunismo, que les llevaba a glorificar a los defensores de la fortaleza y al mismo tiempo a criticar al gobierno frances por su creciente disposicion a pactar con el Viet Minh para poner fin al conflicto. EnglishThis article is aimed to analyze the Spanish press coverage of the Dien Bien Phu battle of that took place between November 1953 and May 1954. This French defeat was crucial to the outcome of the First Indochina War, which ended with the signature of the Geneva Accords on July 21, 1954. The treatment of the battle and its consequences by Spanish newspapers, directly or indirectly controlled by the Francoist authorities, was totally dependent on their anti-Communism, which led them to glorify the defenders of the Fortress and at the same time to criticize the French government for its growing willingness to come to an agreement with the Viet Minh, in order to end the conflict.

The work of Rosa Maria was published in Brazil with the title Arte de comer bem , whose first edition appeared in 1931. In Portugal, it is believed that the first edition appeared in 1932, also authored by Rosa Maria, with the title A cosinheira das cosinheiras. A arte de comer bem. Higiene alimentar e mais de 500 receitas para cosinhar fazer doces, gelados, compotas etc . Since several questions have arisen, this paper proposes to answer some of them.

O objetivo é investigar a defesa da emigração de portugueses para as possessões africanas como alternativa ao processo de colonização em contraponto ao tradicional destino brasileiro, com suas perspectivas econômicas individuais e nacionais representadas pelas remessas.

Abstract: This article aims to analyze, from the history of the organizations, the relationship between memory and the banana cities built by the United Fruit Company in Central America during the 20th century. It is based on the ideas put forward by Charles Booth, Peter Clark, Agnes Delahaye, Stephen Procter and Michael Rowlinson regarding the use of the history of organizations and how from this perspective companies build a historical legacy for their employees and the general public. Using company printed sources, as well as written testimonies of former banana workers, the research tries to identify how banana cities were converted and built as places of memory. The banana city arises from the programs of the so-called “corporate welfare” of the beginning of the previous century, which sought, among other things, not only the loyalty of employees, but also that they feel well and at ease in the divisions where their Companies had settled outside US territory. The majority of articles, whose research has been the relationship between cities and memory, have been restricted to study them from conceptions derived from nationalism. This article demonstrates how companies also generate and construct memories through their different dependencies. In the same way, it can be seen how the whole corporate welfare policy of the United Fruit Company was mainly aimed at legitimizing and supporting its presence in the Central American region.

Abstract: This article discusses the utility of global history for the study of cultural change in the Mediterranean during the early Roman expansion (fourth-second cen- turies BC). By combining historical and archaeological evidence from Italy and the Greek world, this article traces increased connectivity and its diverse effects across the social transect (elites and non-elites) in view of patterns in worship, consumption and display.

Abstract: O artigo discute a evolucao da populacao sob o dominio portugues na regiao que era chamada “Reino de Angola” pelas autoridades coloniais, desde o seculo XVIII a primeira metade do seculo XIX. Nosso objetivo foi responder a uma pergunta simples: a populacao sob o dominio portugues teria aumentado ou diminuido neste periodo? Para isto, analisamos e criticamos um numero razoavel de mapas de populacao e outros dados quantitativos como os dizimos e a contagem dos sobas. O resultado a que chegamos e que existem indicios de crescimento pelo alargamento da fronteira durante o seculo XVIII e que, entre o final do seculo XVIII e o inicio do XIX, ocorreu um colapso demografico que parece estar associado as secas e ao aumento da pressao escravizadora.

Abstract: Resumo Ao se deter sobre a carreira do professor de Geodesia na Escola Militar, Luiz Cruls, no ano de 1899, este texto contribui para a compreensao da relacao entre a astronomia e os debates acerca do mapa nacional na Primeira Republica. Tendo como ponto de partida o caderno de apontamentos dos alunos, foi possivel acessar as discussoes a respeito da confeccao do primeiro mapa nacional, seguindo os parâmetros de cientificidade da epoca, o papel do Observatorio Nacional neste processo e sua relacao com o Exercito. Outro ponto importante foi ampliar o entendimento dos instrumentos cientificos e seu impacto na geodesia expedita. Na historia da astronomia pouca atencao tem sido dada a sua aplicacao nos trabalhos cartograficos e de levantamento topografico. Partimos da premissa de que ao investir nessa linha de pesquisa fornecemos materialidade ao binomio ciencia-cultura, no sentido de que foi a astronomia que definiu as fronteiras de algo fundamental a nacionalidade brasileira, ou seja, o seu territorio.

Abstract: Em meio a uma irrupcao da cronistica franciscana nas primeiras decadas do seculo XVII, fr. Manuel da Ilha, cronista da provincia de Santo Antonio de Portugal, produziu uma narrativa sobre a trajetoria historica da custodia de Santo Antonio do Brasil. Este artigo busca localizar este relato em meio a tendencias que entao orientavam a historiografia franciscana, como a adequacao a um crescente afa documentalista, que exigia que relatos dessa natureza fossem afiancados em papeis e arquivos, e a preocupacao com rivalidades que grassavam entre as ordens religiosas. No centro da analise, estao as conexoes estabelecidas entre a atuacao da ordem e os designios da Coroa portuguesa, tanto num plano identitario mais abstrato e conceitual quanto na realidade experimentada nas fronteiras do imperio.

First, we review the notion of the aesthetic in the Renaissance humanism, examining cases of intellectuals and artists as part of their cultural context. Subsequently, we study the perception of the beauty and ugliness in the travel book of Pigafetta, analyzing his sensibility and aesthetic vision about other cultures.

Abstract: espanolEl objetivo de este articulo es determinar el efecto que tuvo la Primera Guerra Mundial (1914-1918) en las esferas politica, social y cultural de las mujeres costarricenses de comienzos del siglo XX. Para ello se consideran tres tipos de fuentes documentales: informes diplomaticos, revistas culturales y prensa. De este modo, el articulo analiza, primero, los problemas de estudio aportados por las historiografias internacionales de genero y de las mujeres al conocimiento de la Gran Guerra; segundo, se reconstruye el panorama sociopolitico de las mujeres costarricenses en el momento de acontecer la contienda; y tercero, se analizan las distintas repercusiones que tuvo esta guerra en las mujeres tomando en cuenta la imagen de la mujer sobre su participacion en la guerra, sus experiencias en esta segun residieran en el pais o en el continente europeo, sus formas de movilizacion a distancia y las maneras en que esta participacion incidio en la conformacion del movimiento feminista de la epoca. EnglishThe objective of this article is to determine the effect that the First World War (1914-1918) had on the political, social and cultural spheres of Costa Rican women at the beginning of the 20th century. For this, three types of documentary sources are considered: diplomatic reports, cultural magazines and press. In this way, the article analyzes, first, the study problems contributed by international historiographies of gender and women to the knowledge of the Great War; second, the socio-political overview of Costa Rican women at the time of the war is reconstructed; and third, it analyzes the different repercussions that this war had on women, taking into account the image of women about their participation in the war, their experiences during it as they lived in the country or on the European continent, their forms of distance mobilization and the ways in which this participation affected the shaping of the feminist movement of the time.

Abstract: Resumo Nesse artigo reconstituimos a ampla e quase desconhecida polemica em torno da prisao de Pedro Ivo em maio de 1850 no Rio de Janeiro. Depois procuramos esclarecer o teor do debate politico do tempo, ressaltando a forca da bandeira por uma Assembleia Constituinte, encampada por mais de uma dezena de periodicos liberais. Seguimos acompanhando o impacto da fuga de Pedro Ivo, o grandioso banquete da “regeneracao nacional” e a repentina morte, eventos que marcaram o imaginario da epoca. Os eventos repercutiram inclusive entre os povos das matas de Alagoas, por isso abordamos a reacao do diretor da Colonia Militar e o esforco de “desinfestacao” do territorio. Estava em pauta uma disputa de narrativas, tanto da atuacao de Pedro Ivo, bandido ou heroi, como da propria memoria da Rebeliao Praieira. Ao mesmo tempo, havia naqueles anos diferentes projetos de futuro para o pais.

Abstract: This article is based on letters sent from Germany between 1946 and 1950 to the town hall of Blumenau – SC, Brazil, in which the senders ask for information, help and intermediation in order to immigrate. I discuss here the meanings and functions of letters in migratory projects, the imaginary, perceptions and reasons that found the expressed will to emigrate and how this operates in the autobiographical narrative elaboration. I also analyze the relations that senders establish between their “space of experience” in Germany and the “horizon of expectation”.
