TL;DR: The study of death has traditionally focused to a great extent upon the individual, attempting to elucidate the intrapsychic processes related to mourning by one who has suffered a loss, and the interactional focus is not usually considered.
Abstract: This article concerns death as a crisis for the family and the consequent reactions of the family as a unit to the loss of one of its members The study of death has traditionally focused to a great extent upon the individual, attempting to elucidate the intrapsychic processes related to mourning by one who has suffered a loss, and the interactional focus is not usually considered When a death has occurred, not only must each surviving individual bear the pain of grief and adjust to the loss; the surviving family must do so as well There are specific family readjustment tasks, distinct from what we recognize as individual mourning tasks, that complement one another Both need to be considered in understanding this aspect of human behavior, but the concern here is with the former; the intrapsychic aspects will be discussed only as they are relevant to this focus

Abstract: The third volume of the trilogy on aging and society by the team of sociologists at Rutgers University represents a combination of careful scholarship, sophisticated methodological ideas, and a variety of research suggestions which could keep a team of scholars and researchers busy for a long time. This volume draws upon the rich resources found in volume one of Aging and Society; the research findings selected for this volume have been reanalyzed and presented in relation to one theoretical perspective-age stratification. There are also several chapters which are independent and original analyses, for example, the chapter on age stratification in the field of science. The book was written primarily for sociologists, but policy makers will find many valuable ideas for planning and evaluation of programs. Persons in the practicing profession will find many ideas concerning human development and the latter part of the life cycle. One of the strengths of the book is that old age and aging are considered as part of the total life course so that a parochial analysis of aging is avoided. The major purpose of the book is to stimulate the development of a theory of age stratification, which, the authors assert, may become as important in the future as class stratification has been for the past century in the social sciences. Although Matilda W. Riley and her colleagues have laid an excellent foundation for a theory of age stratification, it is the reviewer's judgment that age stratification will continue to be of less importance in differentiating social attitudes, interaction, and behaviors than such other forms of stratification as racial, sexual, and economic. The three major authors have been assisted

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Parkes as mentioned in this paper explored the effect of loss on adults and concluded that grief is a process of adaption and, like many growth processes, a means by which the individual can establish equilibrium.
Abstract: The ability or inability to cope with loss, whether it be something relatively minor like a valued piece of property or something more integral and deeply felt like a loved one, is a concern that touches every person in our society. So much of life is learning to accept losses, some not even consciously felt because they are simultaneously coupled with a gain; when extreme loss occurs, as in the death of a spouse, the person experiencing the loss finds himself in a situation that seems to promise no gain and in an environment that no longer has meaning to him. It is the painful, gradual process of relinquishing ties with what no longer is that Colin Murray Parkes explores in Bereavement: Studies of Grief in Adult Life. He presents to both professional and lay readers a well-organized study of how adults-mostly widows and widowers-experience grief; having devoted twelve years to research on this important subject, he is in a unique position to communicate this knowledge. By juxtaposing examples from his own case studies (four of which are used throughout the book) and from those of other researchers with psychological and philosophical ideas, Dr. Parkes weaves a tapestry of theory and fact leading to a basic conclusion that grief is a process of adaption and, like many growth processes, a means by which the individual can establish equilibrium. \"Grief work is the process of learning by which each change resulting from bereavement is progressively realized (made real) and a fresh set of assumptions about the world is established.\" Since equilibrium can be established only when the so-called work of mourning has been completed, the main thrust of this book is to help the reader understand the components of the bereavement reaction. Initially, the realization of loss engenders an alarm reaction incorporating anxiety, restlessness, and often physical symptoms related to fear. In addition, pain and anger mingle with an urge to search for the lost object; this is truly a \"phase of yearning and protest\" as John Bowlby has termed it. By searching, the grieving person tries to regain what was lost and, by so doing, to mitigate the pain, but this search is doomed to failure and frustration. Temporary incidents of \"finding\" the lost person-for example, feeling that he or
