TL;DR: The Microstrip as mentioned in this paper is a modification of the wire-above-ground system of transmission where the wire is replaced by a narrow strip printed on a dielectric sheet which is backed by a conductor.
Abstract: The Microstrip is a modification of the wire-above-ground system of transmission - the wire is replaced by a narrow strip printed on a dielectric sheet which is backed by a conductor. An exact theory for such a structure is difficult because the cross section is not homogeneous and has a geometry which does not lead to separation of variables. Furthermore it is an "open" structure where the energy is not confined to a finite region as it would be in conventional or "closed" waveguides.

TL;DR: In this article, the need for greater resolution through the use of very short pulses has always been apparent, and equipment has recently been built to generate and display 9,000 megacycle pulses having a length of about 6 millimicroseconds.
Abstract: Pulse testing techniques have been used for many purposes for a long time. In studies of waveguides as radio and radar components and for possible communications systems use, we have employed various types of pulse testing. The need for greater resolution through the use of very short pulses has always been apparent. For this reason, equipment has recently been built to generate and display 9,000 megacycle pulses having a length of about 6 millimicroseconds. In a pulse of this length there are less than 100 cycles of radio frequency energy, and the pulse occupies less than 10 feet of path length in the transmission medium. The r-f bandwidth required is about 500 megacycles.

TL;DR: The 500-type set has probably had greater effect on the methods of designing exchange cable plant than any other set produced since the early 1920's as discussed by the authors, even though improvement had been large in previous sets, transmission was, in general, the controlling factor in the design of subscriber cable.
Abstract: IMPROVEMENT in telephone sets has been responsible for significant advances in the transmission art over the years and has always been an important part of the development program The recent introduction of an improved telephone set known as the 500-type set has probably had greater effect on the methods of designing exchange cable plant than any other set produced since the early 1920's Even though improvement had been large in previous sets, transmission was, in general, the controlling factor in the design of subscriber cable and for more than 25 years the general design methods had not been greatly changed In fact, until very recently, principles in use as early as 19281 were still being applied
