A phantom for imaging biological fluids by ultrasound and CT scanning

TLDR
A phantom for comparative imaging of biological fluids by ultrasonic and computerized tomographic scanning is described, which incorporates a tissue-equivalent gel closely resembling human liver tissue as imaged by these two modalities.
Abstract
The construction of a phantom for comparative imaging of biological fluids by ultrasonic and computerized tomographic scanning is described. The phantom incorporates a tissue-equivalent gel closely resembling human liver tissue as imaged by these two modalities.

Surface-treated stent, catheter, cannula, and the like

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe an ion beam assisted insertion of an elongated medical device into a patient, which includes an interface layer of a high density metal of which the deposition on the base material of the member is ion beam-assisted.

Passive ultrasound needle probe locator

TL;DR: In this paper, a solid steel stylet is carried coaxially within a hollow biopsy needle, such that when the needle and stylet are inserted into the body, ultrasound energy impinging on the needle tip is converted to pressure waves which are conveyed back up the stylet.

Acoustic shadowing due to refractive and reflective effects.

TL;DR: Clinical examples of refractive and reflective shadows are given, and their importance is discussed, and in vitro demonstrations of such shadowing are presented.

Gelatine-alginate complex gel: a new acoustically tissue-equivalent material.

TL;DR: Volume stability under conditions of water immersion without an impermeable boundary layer is within about +/- 2% over a 300 day period, an improvement by a factor of at least 25 on both simple and cross-linked gelatine gels, and stability against chemical or bacterial degradation can also readily be maintained.

In vitro investigation of the origin of echoes within biliary sludge

TL;DR: Examination of the filtration residue by light microscopy established that the source of echoes in biliary sludge was particles, predominantly pigment granules, with lesser amounts of cholesterol crystals, in mainly calcium bilirubinate.

TL;DR: Blood and blood products, and solutions of albumin and chondroitin sulfate of varying concentrations, were imaged by ultrasound and computed tomography in a phantom having ultrasonic and CT characteristics of liver tissue, finding that fluids with CT numbers close to those of their surroundings were poorly detected.
