TLDR
An algorithm is introduced that grows planar, tri-valent graphs by exhibiting a peculiar, twofold dynamics by providing a finite, but surprisingly long, pseudo-random, linear growth process.

Causal sets from simple models of computation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a fully deterministic, radical alternative to the probabilistic techniques currently considered in the Causal Set Programme for growing discrete spacetimes, and investigate a number of computation models by grouping them into two broad classes, based on the support on which they operate; in one case this is linear, like a tape or a string of symbols; in other, it is a two-dimensional grid or a planar graph.

Do Particles Evolve

TL;DR: In this paper, the grand challenge that the emergent, localized structures of elementary automaton 110, or similar ‘particles’, must face in the next ten years is to evolve into populations of increasingly complex individuals, up to forms of (artificial) life, and to a fully blown biosphere.

The On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences

TL;DR: The On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (or OEIS) is a database of some 130000 number sequences which serves as a dictionary, to tell the user what is known about a particular sequence and is widely used.

Three Roads to Quantum Gravity

Lee Smolin
TL;DR: The Holy Grail of modern physics is a theory of the universe that unites two seemingly opposing pillars of modern science: Einstein's theory of general relativity and quantum theory, which deals with the world of the very small (molecules, atoms, electrons). as discussed by the authors provides the first concise and accessible overview of current attempts to reconcile these two theories in a final "theory of everything".

Dual formulation of spin network evolution

TL;DR: This work clarifies the choice of the two rules in the causal spin network evolution, and the assumption of trivalent spin networks for 2+1 spacetime dimensions and four-valent for 3+1.

Complexity of Langton's Ant

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors give a construction to calculate any boolean circuit with the trajectory of a single ant, which proves the P-hardness of the system and implies, through the simulation of one dimensional cellular automata and Turing machines, the universality of the ant and the undecidability of some problems associated to it.
