TLDR
In this article, a shape factor for particles is proposed based on the deviations of the two-dimensional particle outline from standard images of a circle, triangle and square, and considers the particle elongation and the number of characteristic corners of the apparent shape.

Particle shape characterisation using Fourier descriptor analysis

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used Fourier shape descriptors and image analysis of scanning electron microscope photographs of sand grains to provide an accurate quantification of particle morphology and texture, including elongation, triangularity, squareness and irregularity.

The influence of particle size and shape on the angle of internal friction and the flow factor of unlubricated and lubricated powders

TL;DR: In this article, the shear properties of 8 different powders, which varied in particle size and shape, were studied using an annular shear cell, and the angle of internal friction and the flow factor were determined.

Selection of Descriptors for Particle Shape Characterization

TL;DR: In this article, two-dimensional particle shape descriptors obtained by image analysis of six different commercially sourced powders were considered and techniques of cluster and correlation analysis were applied to assist in identifying redundant descriptors for shape characterization of these powder particles, allowing for efficient description of shape using a reduced set.

Particle-shape monitoring and control in crystallization processes

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple technique that can identify suitable data from a noisy signal produced on-line by commercially available image-analysis software is presented, which successfully uses this signal to regulate the flow rate of a habit modifier stream to maintain a desired crystal habit.
