TLDR
In this paper, it was shown that the chemistry of the interstitial waters affects the plasticity index of the studied soils and as a consequence, the standard van der Merwe swelling potential chart and the Seed activity chart which are based on the Plasticity Index do not provide an accurate assessment of swell potential.
Abstract
Research on varve clays and Miocene clays in the Warsaw area has shown that the chemistry of the interstitial waters affects the plasticity index of the studied soils. As a consequence, the standard van der Merwe swelling potential chart and the Seed activity chart which are based on the plasticity index do not provide an accurate assessment of swell potential.

Prediction of Swelling Potential for Compacted Clays

TL;DR: The possibility of damage to structures due to the swelling of clays is complicated by the problem of identifying, at the outset of an investigation, those soils likely to possess undesirable expan...

Prediction of Swelling Potential for Compacted Clays

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed reliable means for predicting potential expansion characteristics of clays from classification test data, and established a well-defined relationship between percentage of clay sizes present in soil, activity of clay, and percentage of swell under 1-psi surcharge of sample compacted at optimum water content to maximum density in Standard AASHO Compaction Test.

The Civil Engineer

TL;DR: Innovation inspired civil engineer with fears of environmental degradation as mentioned in this paper has expressed a desire to improve green environments in new residential buildings and proposed a new residential building design based on this idea.
