Mechanism of Action of Barbiturates

TL;DR: The purpose is to review the neurochemical effects of acute and chronic barbitu rate administration, with particular emphasis on the relationship between neurochemical changes and the development of tolerance and dependence.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effect of intracarotid amobarbital injections upon experimentally induced epileptiform activity.

TL;DR: Most attempts to create subcortical epileptogenic foci and to test their response to intracarotid amobarbital were unsuccessful and whenever epileptiform activity was obtained there was evidence that it might have been due to seepage of the penicillin into CSF-containing spaces or neighbouring cortex.
Journal ArticleDOI

The combined action of pentobarbital and meperidine, and of procaine and meperidine, in guinea pigs.

TL;DR: The results of these experiments show that pentobarbital will protect experimental animals against the convulsive effects of meperidine and that the depressant action of pentobar bital is augmented by the presence of me peridine.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effects of multiple injections of thiopental sodium on the sleeping time and the physiologic disposition of the drug in male rats.

TL;DR: There are significant differences between the tissue levels of thiopental sodium in tolerant and nontolerant rats sacrificed at various times and changes in body weight do not alter the course of tolerance to thiop dental sodium in rats.

Pharmacologic action of barbiturates: their use in neuropsychiatric conditions

Carl Phillip Wagner
- 02 Dec 1933 -
TL;DR: The barbituric acid derivatives have recently assumed a rather prominent role in the treatment of psychotic patients, and among psychiatrists interest has primarily centered around the psychologic reaction produced by these drugs.
Journal ArticleDOI

Observations on Effect of Repeated Administration of Nembutal in Guinea Pigs

TL;DR: The nembutal, sodium-ethyl (1-methyl-butyl) barbiturate, was dissolved in water and injected intraperitoneally into guinea pigs to see whether they had a tolerance for the drug, and induced sleep in about 65% of the animals.
