Abstract
The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of economic growth on employment generation during the first decade of the XXI century in the State of Sonora and its regions. To do this, first the regional employment-elasticity coefficient is estimated and then, with an econometric model, the factors behind job creation in the regions and the state are identified. The Coast Region (0.421) had, at the end of the decade, the highest employment-elasticity coefficient –even greater than the State (0.362)– followed by the Border Region (0.304) and the Sierra Region (0.072). The Coast Region showed wide prominence in the share of investment, value added and employment, although employment-elasticity coefficients were low for all three regions and the State.
