TLDR
The evolution and advantages of three previously described bifurcated power transmission systems are outlined, and three new systems are described, analysed, and compared and are shown to possess identical characteristics.
Abstract
The evolution and advantages of three previously described bifurcated power transmission systems are outlined. Three new systems are then described, analysed, and compared. Four of these systems, though different, are shown to possess identical characteristics. The analysis used may be applied to other problems, and curves for design use are presented.

Virtual-Power Flow and Mechanical Gear-Mesh Power Losses of Epicyclic Gear Trains

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors defined the concept of virtual power as the power measured, in a noninertial frame, in an epicyclic gear train, and introduced the virtual-power ratio, an invariant related to the power loss in an EH system, based on which a novel algorithm to compute the gear-mesh powerloss and the train efficiency is formulated.

Compact Gearboxes for Modern Robotics: A Review.

TL;DR: An assessment framework strongly conditioned by HRI applications is proposed, and it is proposed to use virtual power as a suitable way to assess the inherent limitations of a gearbox technologies to achieve high efficiencies.

Power flow and efficiency analysis of epicyclic gear transmission with split power

TL;DR: In this article, the analytical efficiency of a compound epicyclic gear train with split power was derived via the approach based on virtual power, and suggestions on design were given to avoid self-lock and increase the total efficiency.

Theoretic study of efficiency of two-DOFs of epicyclic gear transmission via virtual power

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors applied the concept of virtual power to find analytical expression of the efficiency of a two degrees of freedom train, with associated applicable ranges, and verified the results by an example.

Teeth-Number Synthesis of a Multispeed Planetary Transmission Using an Estimation of Distribution Algorithm

TL;DR: In this article, the gear-teeth number synthesis of an automatic planetary transmission used in automobiles is formulated as a constrained optimization problem that is solved with the aid of an Estimation of Distribution Algorithm.

Power Flow and Loss in Differential Mechanisms

TL;DR: The fundamental relations connecting the torques, velocities and power flows for a general differential mechanism of imperfect efficiency were derived from first principles as discussed by the authors, and the fundamental relations for the Torques, Velocities, and Power Flows were derived for general differential mechanisms.

Compound Diesel Engines for Aircraft

TL;DR: The association of a gas turbine with a piston engine is by no means a recent conception as mentioned in this paper, as early as 1924 a Napier Lion Series V engine was equipped with a turbine in the manner shown in Fig. 1, the exhaust gases being fed into the turbine to provide all the power to drive the engine supercharger.
