In this article, the authors identify potential barriers to constructability and assess the relative frequency or severity of these barriers in industry, characterize the prevalent barriers, and describe any significant differences in barrier frequency across sectors of the industry.
Abstract
Recognition of barriers to constructability is identified as one of 15 significant parameters critical for effective constructability implementation. A barrier to constructability is any significant inhibitor that prevents effective implementation of the constructability program. The steps of this research are to: (1) Identify potential barriers to constructability and assess the relative frequency or severity of these barriers in industry; (2) characterize the prevalent barriers to constructability; and (3) describe any significant differences in barrier frequency across sectors of the industry. Constructability barriers are evident in almost all organizations at both corporate and project levels. Treatment of constructability barriers should involve a three‐phase cycle of identification, mitigation, and review. Initial efforts should focus on determining the presence of constructability barriers, and on determining the significance of those barriers identified. There are several problematic barriers to ...

Early Contractor Involvement in Design and Its Impact on Construction Schedule Performance

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied early contractor involvement in design and its impact on construction schedule performance through a combined empirical case study and theoretical simulation analysis, where pipe and steel fabricators' inputs at different design stages of industrial construction projects were identified.

Constructability rankings of construction systems based on the analytical hierarchy process

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to derive prioritized scales for constructability factors and relative contribution of common construction systems in a building superstructure comprising structural frames, slabs, envelopes, roof, and internal walls.

Assessment of Constructability Practices among General Contractors

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assess constructability practices among general contractors and find that contractors applied constructability concepts and participated during the earliest phase of the projects more often than is thought.

A review of current practice in constructability improvement: case studies on construction projects in Indonesia

TL;DR: The concept of constructability emerged in the late 1970s, evolved from studies into how improvement can be achieved to increase cost efficiency and quality in the construction industry as discussed by the authors, an approach that links the design and construction processes.

Constructability Programs: Method for Assessment and Benchmarking

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a structure of program elements or parameters critical for constructability implementation success and a classification scheme for use in evaluating constructability programs, and the classification system is used to benchmark current constructability practices.
