TLDR
The bridge health index (HI) as discussed by the authors is an improved and more comprehensive numerical rating system that uses the element inspection data to determine the remaining asset value of a bridge or network of bridges.Abstract:
Bridge management has been a subject of intense interest and development for the past 10 years. In support of improved bridge management, FHWA funded the development of the Pontis bridge computer program, which is now in use by approximately 40 of the 50 states. In addition, many new guide specifications have been produced to assist bridge managers in their efforts to better manage the nation's aging bridge inventory. The AASHTO Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures has taken the lead along with FHWA in implementing the improved bridge management systems. California and a few other states have been critical of the current ranking system for bridge maintenance and have been working to develop an improved performance measure. The bridge health index (HI), an improved and more comprehensive numerical rating system that uses the element inspection data to determine the remaining asset value of a bridge or network of bridges, is discussed. The HI is more consistent with the element-level evaluation data colle...read more

A Comprehensive Probabilistic Model of Traffic Loads based on Weigh-in-Motion Data for Applications to Bridge Structures
Jihwan Kim,Junho Song +1 more
TL;DR: A comprehensive probabilistic model describing the characteristics of vehicles and traffic flow in the WIM data is developed so that the traffic load effects of a target bridge can be assessed using a Monte Carlo simulation approach.

As-Built Information Model for Bridge Maintenance
TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the need for inclusion of construction as-built data in the bridge management database along with the periodic inspection and maintenance data, and demonstrate the proper design of an asbuilt information management model and system that is integrated with existing standard bridge management systems.

Expected maintenance cost of deteriorating civil infrastructures
Dan M. Frangopol,Jung Sik Kong +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a methodology for the evaluation of expected maintenance costs of deteriorating civil infrastructures by considering the uncertainties that are associated with the application of subsequent maintenance actions.

Risk-based maintenance strategy for deteriorating bridges using a hybrid computational intelligence technique: a case study
Min-Yuan Cheng,Yung-Fang Chiu,Chien-Kuo Chiu,Doddy Prayogo,Yu-Wei Wu,Zih-Long Hsu,Cheng-Hsuan Lin +6 more
TL;DR: A new computational intelligence system is developed, the so-called risk-based evaluation model for bridge life-cycle maintenance strategy (REMBMS), which considers the three main risk factors of component deterioration, scouring and earthquakes in order to minimise the expected life- cycle cost of bridge maintenance.

A Flexible Bridge Rating Method Based on Analytical Evidential Reasoning and Monte Carlo Simulation
TL;DR: A condition rating method that can operate under different condition assessment practices and account for uncertainties in condition assessment by means of the Evidential Reasoning (ER) theory is introduced.
