For over 20 years, the notion of ‘management of care’ has been foregrounded as key in the jurisdiction of the nursing profession, with the aim of detaching itself from the wider medical umbrella. A number of voices have advocated such centrality. These include juridical, academic and occupational perspectives. Critical stances, although peripheral, have also been voiced. These have been received, at best, with a ‘polite silence’ in mainstream circles. By looking at the arguments surrounding the ‘management of care’ circulated in these two decades, this article reports the various forms of discursive practice that participate in the political process of autonomy building. Particularly, we focus on the validity of the arguments as well as the cohesion across arguments within the knowledge system. In doing so, we evaluate its main premises and foundations, the reach of the conceptualisation and its disjointed, differing and incomplete bases. Similarly, we used an inferential technique for the reconstruction of omitted and unexpressed assertions. The article introduces an approach of the humanities that is seldom seen in healthcare. It also proposes a research agenda in regard to management of care for the upcoming decades.

As of 2010, six of the ten most innovative companies in the world were American, two were Japanese and one was Korean. None were European. Three years before, in 2007, the situation in the Old World had been hardly any brighter; according to the European Innovation Scoreboard, the innovation index stood at 0.73 in Sweden, 0.59 in Germany and 0.47 in France. In the same year, the World Intellectual Property Organization listed the number of patents lodged by country. Sweden’s 1,287, Germany’s 17,739 and France’s 12,112 were dwarfed by the USA’s 157,283 and Japan’s 164,954. It seems undeniable that many Western countries are still a long way behind and that closing the innovation gap remains a kind of quest for the Holy Grail in terms of competitiveness and employment. However, on closer inspection, the keys to Paradise are more like a safety device both for national economies and for the men and women who implement innovations on a day-to-day level.

Dans le cadre d’une approche pragmatique, nous etudionsles savoirs scientifiques juges utiles par une populationsinguliere de professeurs d’educationphysique : les agreges, anciens elevesde l’Ecole normale superieure. A partir dequestionnaires ouverts, sont identifies le contenu et la formede ces savoirs, leurs modes d’acquisition et leurs fonctions pourl’intervention. Les resultats sont confrontesa ceux de Terral et Collinet (2007) obtenus sur unechantillon generaliste, en vue de discuter del’impact eventuel d’experiences originales desocialisation. Au final, les enseignants interrogesprivilegient les savoirs technologiques sur les savoirsscientifiques et sont partages entre des dispositionsapplicationnistes et contextualistes.

Der Terrorismus gehort zu jenen Phanomenen der Gesellschaft, die die soziologische Analyse schon deswegen herausfordern, weil man zogern muss, ihm die Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken, die er fur sich reklamiert. Ist nicht jedes Wort uber den Terrorismus bereits eines zu viel, wenn man es hier mit einer Strategie zu tun hat, die physische Gewalt ausubt, um symbolische Effekte zu erzielen, zu denen nicht zuletzt das Ausmas gehort, in dem er ernst genommen wird? Insofern ist es vielleicht nicht nur als Manko zu verstehen, wenn die Soziologie den Terrorismus lange Zeit als historisches wie als modernes Phanomen eher vernachlassigt hat (siehe Ahmad 2002; Ahmad u. Howell 2003). Nicht auszuschliesen ist, dass hier notgedrungen eher implizit als explizit, in der Form einer latent gehaltenen Beobachtung, eine bereits zur Sache gehorende Vorsicht am Werke ist.
