Closed loop diesel engine control

TLDR
In this article, a method and apparatus for achieving optimized efficiency combustion in a diesel internal combustion engine utilizes a cylinder pressure detector which measures peak cylinder pressure relative to crankshaft timing and compares it with a speed-load-timing map comprising several engine parameters including engine speed and engine load in order to compensate for various unknown combustion characteristics of the fuels to be used in compression ignition engines, and automatically adjusts fuel injection timing for optimum efficiency.

Ignition timing control method and apparatus

TL;DR: In this article, the angular position of peak cylinder pressure is measured and to the extent such angular position deviates from a preselected set point, the time of spark ignition is advanced or retarded to restore the position of peaked cylinder pressure to the set point.

Ignition systems for internal combustion engines

TL;DR: In this paper, the advance and retard of the spark ignition in an internal combustion engine are achieved by generating two series of pulses in synchronism with the engine using one series as a reference for maximum advance and the other series to operate a counter to count down the requisite number of pulses beyond the maximum advance point before the spark is initiated, the count of the counter being varied from a computer in accordance with speed and load on the engine.

Pressure responsive engine ignition control system

TL;DR: An ignition control system for use in internal combustion engines includes apparatus for sensing maximum pressure due to combustion in an engine combustion chamber during one cycle of operation, for determining when a rotatable member of the engine rotates through a certain predetermined angular position, and for adjusting the ignition timing on a subsequent cycle so that the occurrence of maximum pressure in the combustion chamber coincides with rotation of the rotating member through an arbitrary angular position as discussed by the authors.
